i don't know if they're explicitly doing a rand/egwene/perrin thing as much as it's them getting worked up and mad about stuff and nynaeve lit the match that got rand ticked off and made perrin feel more regret about killing his wife

Portals are just such a cool concept to have been used so uncreativly. Use one as a trap or something. I like what it does for the story but it feels like a real missed opportunity and Naruto set the bar too high by accident. E: is the episode out?

if they didn't intend for Mat to leave the story there, they did a really good job covering it up and making it seem intentional maybe since he left in between shooting 1-6 and 7-8 they were able to get last minute script changes in prior to shooting these two eps, because the adaptation is working pretty well

You do have to know the area you're leaving from very, very well to be able to open a gateway. You'd have to stay in the same spot for an entire fight to be able to use them in combat like you're talking about, which just leaves you open to getting killed. They do use one as a trap on the gholam though, so it's not like it wasn't thought of. It just doesn't work really well for that.
