My parents are going to a wedding today. I tried to talk them out of it but got the usual boomerisms. They both boosted in early December but both have several comorbidities. Guess we'll see how hungry the reaper is!

Lmao at how dems keep on preaching about booster shots / "Vaccines as a silver bullet solution" when so many of their leadership ended up with breakthrough infections.

.So, little back of the envelope calculation here for the UK, feel free to call me out if I got this all wrong. So using 7 day moving averages, the Delta wave pushed out about 45k confirmed cases on October 25th, corresponding to a 1050ish hospitalization spike on November 2th. There's now been some accumulation of evidence that hospitalization rates from Omicron are in the ballpark of 0.33 of Delta's. So that means, from the 190k 7 day moving average as published December 31, one would infer about 1300 daily hospitalizations around Jan 10th ? Did I get that right ? * This is assuming Delta is almost entirely out of the picture by now. * This is not accounting for their HCW that have been quitting in droves over the last month. => Then why is the 7 day moving average of hospital admissions for the UK already 1644, discounting Scotland, on December 29th ? https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/uk-daily-covid-admissions?time=2021-12-04..latest => Tentative Answer : The guestimate in the first paragraph does not take into account that if more people would have been waiting in line for a PCR in this spikey boi holiday period, the confirmed cases would be perhaps double of what got reported, a skewing that did not happen under Delta since the Rt was less dramatic and the testing apparatus was sufficient (England Positivity rate @25% Dec 26, before Christmas superspreader impact, as opposed to +-10% during previously referenced period) We'll see I guess, after all the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Bon appétit. one-time fee fucked around with this message at 15:27 on Jan 1, 2022 |

My unit banned all visitors on Christmas Eve (self.nursing)quote:I work in a large ICU. Apparently at some point last week, a COVID positive family member (who knew they were positive) came to visit and exposed a lot of nurses/patients. We now have 10+ nurses out with COVID and have banned all visitors starting Christmas Eve. I feel for these families & gently caress that guy for ruining visitation so close to Christmas, but I can’t say I don’t feel safer now without visitors. 🤷🏼♀️

we're keeping our kid out of preschool for at least an extra week something that's going to make us all unhappy and stressed, mostly means I get to see kid more because she hangs out in my office while I work, but she'd rather be playing Homework Girl with her friends. Yes, a superhero who does homework. I am disturbed by this kind of roleplaying, I didn't even think about homework until I was 19 and in college

Happy New Year guys! HHS data has us hitting 98k hospitalizations sometime yesterday, but there’s also 100 less hospitals reporting on that than normal and NY is showing a decrease which is counter to what NY published. We are ~29k from hitting the hospitalization record set on 1/17/21 Several states have already passed the wild type hospitalization record

The whole spectrum is represented in the comments. quote:Visitors shouldn’t have been allowed all along. It’s most like nobody is actually interested in stopping the spread of a deadly disease 🤷🏻♂️ quote:I wish my unit would ban visitors again. We have a 1 visitor policy that isn’t respected. I worked yesterday and the family members were horrible. One patient ended up with four visitors in the room. Every time I looked up, someone else at the nurses station was wanting blankets, cups of ice, straws, socks, diaper rash cream. Just constant nit picky items that interrupt my workflow and weren’t requested when I was in the patient room. Then I actually caught a family member tying a tourniquet on my patient and looking for veins herself. quote:I would love to go back to no visitors again. I would also like to ban the employees with exemptions who went to mega church today. Also the employees who pull off the mask when they talk in the unit phone. I have people at home I need to protect. I don’t need a bitch rear end coworker or visitor getting me sick. quote:We are allowing visitors for all patients, covid or not. We are supposed to provide PPE (gown, gloves, N95, face shields) to all visitors for covid rooms and they have bags outside them to store/reuse their N95s and face shields. You go in 95% of these rooms and family members are in there eating, drinking, just chilling with NO masks on (some even straight up refuse) while the patient is just sitting their aerosolizing their covid cooties on BiPAP or hiflow blender. It is mind blowing to me. Considering that most of critical covid patients are not vaccinated, I just assume that all visitors fall into the same category and hope they don't get admitted next week. quote:In Germany visitors need to be fully vaccinated and have to get tested on that day(except those who already have a booster). And every visitor is required to wear a mask the entire visit, if they don't we throw them out. quote:We've never allowed COVID patients to have visitors since the beginning (except end of life), but somehow this patient's husband made it past security and walked all around the unit complaining to everyone about his wife's care. He was escorted out, but not before infecting several staff who are now out sick. Merry loving Christmas. Bonus: quote:I’m sure they all wear masks. But until the CDC admits this is airborne and your regular mask gives little protection against it, nurses are screwed.
