The LOTR 4K set are indeed 2K scans and are the equivalent of second generation transfers. All of the DNR, edge enchantment and other digital tweaking that were baked into the 2K scans for the blu-rays were then scaled up to to 4K with even more DNR and EE, plus color revisions and HDR implementation. This leads to a noticable variation between shots, depending on how much EE was applied in the first place, FX shots being the most affected.

Fellowship looks good, TT has a pretty gnarly digital look and does the worst of the color grading revisionism. The film is much warmer then it originally was, ROTK is somewhere in between. Overall I would say stick with the Blu-rays.

Generally speaking the UHD format is about weighing pros and cons, the vast majority of UHDs have at least some minor drawbacks that you have to weigh out. There really aren't a whole lot of UHDs that I'd consider to be legitimately perfect with zero flaws, it's just that HDR almost always wins out over whatever those minor flaws may be, even in a situation where something isn't native 4k and the resolution bump isn't as noticeable. Certainly HDR is a huge part of what makes the format worthwhile.

UHD and a lot of the attendant wrinkles have really made me fall back in love with normal blurays. They by and large look very good and are cheap as hell!

Don't the UHD of the Lord of the Rings have HDR implemented into them that the 2012 Blu Rays won't?

Yes, and that's the main reason why I think the LOTR UHDs are clearly an upgrade, just not a face melting no-brainer upgrade the way some UHDs are. But if those issues mentioned above(DNR, color tweaking) bother you more than me, your calculation might come out differently.

Unfortunately it's just not always a simple answer, a lot of it is going to come down to personal preference because not everyone has the same pet peeves and deal-breakers when it comes to physical media.

Well from looking at some of the comparison shots of stills I saw comparing the DVD/Blu Ray and UHD on YouTube* it makes me want to get the new Box Set.
I just thought I'd ask first in case there was some major problem I hadn't heard about it.

HDR is nice but there's also the potential of a true 4x pixel density increase, leading to a big upgrade in detail clarity. Like Basebf555 said there are a lot of mixed bag 4K Blu rays out there that don't take full advantage of the format, which is frustrating considering the legacy of some of these films and the premium pricing and technical possibilities of the format. 35mm film technically will only reach it's digital equivalent in 8K, but past 4K is a land of diminishing returns in terms of pixel density versus screen size and average viewing distance, etc...

Some top notch 4K discs: Alien, Blade Runner, Parasite, all of the Kubrick stuff so far, the recent Hitchcock collection with Rear Window, Psycho, Vertigo and the Birds. These discs really show off the format. Mad Max on Kino is another nice one. Alien is my go to demo disc, it's just everything you would want - insane detail, fantastic HDR, oh and a great movie too of course!

On the other hand, you have stuff like Terminator 2 (insanely bad DNR, Max Museum people) and Batman Begins (less detail) which look overall worse then their regular Blu-ray releases. The big studio stuff has become particularly hit and miss to the extent that I usually spend 20 minutes or so doing research into new releases before I cough up the dough. The small boutique labels are usually more reliable but same thing. Robocop on Arrow looks incredible on regular Blu-ray to the extent that, despite the fact I have already pre-ordered it, I wonder how much the upcoming true 4K disc will really be an upgrade. We'll see I guess.

TLDR: Do your homework before buying any disc because it's not always going to be an upgrade. Caps a holic and the Blu-ray.com forums are really all you need to make an informed decision, just be wary of some of the guys on the latter who tend to lose the forest for the trees in terms of sheer technical measurements versus the overall presentation.

Maybe I'm a heathen, but most of the HDR comparisons look better to me than the blu-ray. They aren't as bright, but it looks like it's because there's more detail to the shadows and darkness and light (plus the textures).

The warmer tone may not be "correct" to the print, but it does look better? The composition having minor warmer tones makes details stand out a bit more, gives it a bit more vibrancy. It also cuts back that post-Matrix sequel color tinting that was plaguing films at the time without compromising the original image too much.

The tip of Gandalf's staff vanishing is weird. What about HDR does that? Even so, while it may not be as "correct" because of the staff and other details, but I do still visually prefer the HDR version in that shot. It's not as white-washed, there's a more dynamic contrast between everything. Ironically, even though part of the staff is missing, I can see the staff better in the HDR version.

It's not as egregious as the Terminator 2 UHD. I do agree with concerns about film preservation. And I'm a bit surprised that this passed Jackson's seemingly rigorous quality control. (But I assumed he was involved in this release, and he very well might have been too busy or not asked to be involved.)

My issue with TT is primarily that a lot of the daytime shots in around Edoras and Rohan were originally presented in an overall bleaker color grading. At this point in the story the forces of Mordor are growing exponentially and things are looking grim. The look of the film versus the more vibrant and colorful FOTR reflects this, continued into ROTK which is almost monochromatic at points as the drama reaches it's peaks. There's one scene in particular, Arwen's vison about Aragorn's funeral. The vibe of the shot has totally changed, plus a bunch of vignette blurring. I guess it's subjective whether or not that's an improvement but it's definitely a major change: https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1=5242&d2=15008&s1=48969&s2=156548&i=8&l=0&a=1

Edit: Gandalf's staff is a DNR (digital noise reduction) issue, not HDR. Their algorithm mistook the head of the staff for the ground they're standing on and erased it.

I will say the 4K of Fellowship is definitely an upgrade overall. The theatrical Blu ray wasn't sharp, the EE Blu Ray had better detail but had a weird green tint over the entire film, and the 4K finally gets the best of both worlds, with beautiful detail and a gorgeous HDR pass. The indoor scenes in Bilbo's house and the Prancing Pony are super lush.

The LOTR DVDs were fine, the Theatrical BDs were an embarrassment, the Extended Editions were better except Fellowship was ridiculously green, and the UHDs of both LOTR and Hobbit are filtered and sharpened almost as bad as old Universal BDs. Not every label or production house gets the director in on transfers or new releases, so that's not on him. And no, I haven't had time to watch The Beatles yet, but I've only heard universal praise for it?
