Dante posted:

Again, this is not a "difficult topic" for the Geneva convention and is something that has been discussed and ratified extensively after video and photography of PoWs were broadcasted during the Vietnam war. The general rule is that photographs/videos of PoWs are only legal if they can't be individually identified. To quote of the ICRC commentary on article 13(2):

I think you're saying "The convention as written prohibits this" -- you definitely seem to be right about this -- and the person you're quoting is either saying "it ought not" or alternatively "whether it ought to or not, it's not viable in light of the different environment we operate in". It's maybe a little more interesting to discuss the two latter possibilities, given no court is going to hear this violation any time soon.

My instinct is that showing videos of people calling home, the thing we're talking about right now, is prurient and propagandistic and probably not something we should encourage, but that there are other exceptions I would make that would fall afoul of the current language. I think applying the kind of basic media protections most countries already do (black barring peoples eyes, disguising voices, blurring where relevant) would be one step I'd want to take. Applications should probably build in these kinds of privacy-preserving tools in order to be able to enable this easier to do.

On a basic level, the documentation of history (if done neutrally and with respect and dignity) would seem to me to outweigh the personal privacy interest of an individual combatant. In this particular instance we also have evidence that the belligerent is engaging in active deceit to its own citizens and to the world well in excess of the regular fog of war and it seems a little silly to tie Ukraine's hands from establishing with a higher level of credibility that their narrative is more truthful than Russia's. The other thing I'd add is that I genuinely do believe that the extent to which the global community has united to help Ukraine stems from Ukraine's savvy use of soft power (via official channels + citizen journalism on social media). In a world where we militate against this kind of behavour, we would sap Ukraine's soft power and reinforce the existing power differential in hard power between the countries. It does not surprise me that the language today doesn't incorporate this balancing act because it was written in a time where many of these things were not concerns, these are basically issues that are maximum are as old as CNN and really come into their own post-2010 with photo and video social media and smartphones.

But, as others have said above, this wouldn't be in my top 10,000 priorities right now.

Rubbing their face in it is entirely the point of releasing the information. Whereas it was more beneficial for Russia to back channel their weapons to the Middle East. These are different political climates. There’s not going to be a Clancy nato escalation because of the weapons being delivered.

Like I'm sure many of them don't really believe the bullshit they've been hearing from Russian media about Ukrainians all being Nazis and whatnot. And Ukrainians arent super foreign to Russians like they share very similar cultures and of course most Ukrainians speak Russian. It probably must feel like if American soldiers were sent to invade Canada.

Even American soldiers won't usually just shoot unarmed civilians that are getting in the way, and we're uncommonly excited to commit war crimes.

quote:

"Glory to Ukraine" (Ukrainian: Слава Україні! Героям слава!, romanized: Slava Ukraini! Heroiam slava!; transl. "Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the heroes!") is a Ukrainian national salute. It appeared at the beginning of the 20th century in different variations, when it became wildly popular among ethnic Ukrainians during the Ukrainian War of Independence of 1917 to 1921.[1] It gained worldwide prominence as a slogan during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, and was set to music by Norwegian composer Marcus Paus.

To be fair the TB-2 isn't a Mach 2 plane zooming in at low altitude that would require air defenses to stop on a dime (anyways they are stopped in the video) and shoot at stuff. This is a rather large and slow drone, cruising at reasonably high altitude based on the angle of the camera. Of course, ideally the air defenses moving up toward the front would be covered by other air defenses so they don't get pasted from the air - many of which on paper would have absurdly long engagement envelopes against something like the TB-2.

Kharkiv

https://twitter.com/JussiKonttinen/status/1498001831028346880?t=QRzlv0V1MDcuI0D-bQURAg&s=19

Translated excerpts:

Forces moving through to go to Ukraine posted:

Cars with armored windows also came from the border with the name of Rosgvardija on the national map, although it should only work in Russia.

According to information obtained by the HS source from Russian forces, the entire Rosgvardija convoy had been burned in Kharkov on Saturday.

Damage on the other side of the border posted:

Larisa Galchenko's house, which also has a broken roof, was the worst .

Galchenko walked crying in front of his house and says he is now homeless. There are ulcers on his face from glass shards. He was at home with his old mother when an explosion at 6.20 woke them up.

Authorities say the explosions have been caused by Ukrainian shootings.

However, according to the opposition-minded Novaya Gazeta, a piece has been found at the site of the Malaya Sadovaya blast, the text of which suggested that it was a Russian anti-aircraft missile. According to experts interviewed by the newspaper, it may have exploded in an attempt to combat the Ukrainian ammunition.

Ilya Azar , a journalist from Novaya Gazeta, was detained in Belgorod for some time on Saturday.

An explosion had destroyed an entire house in the town of Maiskin on Thursday morning. Human casualties were avoided. According to the authorities, it was a rocket flying from Ukraine. Scientists had covered the pit it made on Friday.

The one thing with this sort of propaganda is that it kind of cuts both ways, presupposing a measure of restraint or humanity on the part of the aggressor. I'm reminded of how the Chinese government frames the famous Tank Man picture from the Tiananmen Square protests, when forced to comment on it.
