what's funny is most "white" walls aren't really whites, they are often off-whites. pic 1-3 i'd say is an actual white pic 4 is an off-white, might have a green undertone last one is definitely an off-white i typically tell by comparing to the trim as I just learned, colorful walls tend to draw your attention, which is often not what you want. that doesn't mean it needs to be white, but white, off-white, grays or neutrals are good at not attracting attention and overwhelming you colored walls can work good with certain art setups though. there was a person who had a lot of paintings with a ton of black, and the magenta will actually worked pretty well with it

One of the rooms I rented when I was living in Seattle was a kind of mustard-yellow, which I thought was hideous when I first saw the pictures, but once I was actually in the room and had it lit better (instead of just using the ceiling boob lamp) it was actually kind of a really nice vibe. Very cozy and warm at night, and I mostly got evening or reflected light so it really helped brighten things up. We painted our last apartment living room in a slightly lighter yellow, which was also nice, particularly at night, and did the bedroom in a dusty pinkish color. What really surprised me was how much the pink changed throughout the day - when it was sunny, the room was colorful, but at night or on a cloudy day, the walls faded to a lovely muted brown.

If it's less sunny, the effect will be more warm tones (red/brown/yellow) coming out. south and west facing windows will also bring out warmer tones, whereas north and east will bring out cooler tones.

It's interesting to me that a lot of people seem to be so intimitated by colours, or find them distracting. I'm an illustrator and designer and deal with colour choices daily, and find being surrounded by colours incredibly energizing. Personally, I want my house to look like someone gave William Morris and a five-year-old with crayons speed and a free weekend to let loose.        (Claude Monet's kitchen and dining room, peak cuteness)

I find it just draws all the attention away from the furnishings. I want to focus/highlight on my furnishings. However, as I said, if you have a decent amount of stuff on the wall, I think more color can work, less as a wall color and more as an art backdrop. I also think you need to have colored walls that pair really well with your furnishings.

Yeah, I guess our motives are different. I don't consider wallpaper or wall colour as backdrop but preferably a big artwork in itself. Attracting attention is it's point. I also think carefully matching every item and colour to each other creates a very bland whole compositionally. Distinct items and colours bring out interesting new sides out of each other, and make you think why they are paired up.

yeah it's definitely just a difference in styles. also the whole modernism opposing ornament and decoration. I spent so much time deciding on my few furnishings, that I want to highlight them. I do have a few art things, but the main goal for those is to work well with the wall, the furnishings, and to introduce new shapes (for example a lot of furniture is rectilinear, so art could be used to bring in something more curvy). You clearly understand that there are different philosophies, and rules apply to different contexts, etc, I'm just interested if you like this explicitly as an exception to the rule or if it doesn't seem as one-note to you or what. Full disclosure: I cannot put into words how much I hate that dining room. I made an involuntary "guh" noise as I scrolled down. It has the void thing going on that a lot of folks in this thread hate, but instead of white it's in a color that makes me imagine being tied to the table and waterboarded by a smiling youth minister while his congregation chants mantras about sharing and charity. It's so cheerful I find it threatening on an instinctive, primordial level.

The peak cuteness refers more to the blue-and-red kitchen picture above the dining room, and the idea of the two very intense rooms existing next to each other.. Sorry if that wasn't clear. In itself that dining room would probably feel like floating in a tank of piss, tbh.

I love Claude Monet's dining room, though IRL it's a bit softer and more buttery than that photo. It's been preserved for like a hundred years so it obviously reflects outdated design norms, but in particular, imagine being in there at night with everyone (Gertrude Stein, et al) crowded around the table having dinner, everything honey-colored from the warm lights bouncing off the glossy yellow walls. Also, agreed re: colors being invigorating - it's why I love Kaffe Fassett so much.

If you have bright colored walls, or zany wallpaper, or whatever, I'm not going to notice your furniture. So that certainly can be useful like in this case, but it can also be used to hide both bad furniture and good furniture. In the first case, you may find that if you get furniture you like more, you may want to change your paint so it can finally stand out!

yes for those maps I agree, though I think what gets lost here is white, gray, etc. can all have undertones, and differentiating between a grayish blue and a blueish gray is somewhat subjective. I had put together this comparison when looking at how much of a blue undertone I wanted for my bedroom gray paint, and used an exact gray (131/131/131) as a reference. if you have the R and blue values approximately the same distance from green, with red being lower and blue being higher, you will get various levels of gray/blue. the closer to green, the more grayish they are, and as they get farther away, the more blueish they get. so for these (I chose ones with similar brightness) the order would be pure gray gray with blue undertone: rock gray (my choice) smoke gray wolf gray at some point most people would say it's a blue with a gray undertone bachelor blue blue nose I think there's a color between wolf gray and bachelor blue that would work well with those maps, as the blue would come out quite a bit, but you might describe as "gray"

can't believe I'm considering swagging but my designer said I could swag the pendant I want without it looking like grandma's house they mentioned this as an example, obviously this is multiple lights, but you can get single pieces that go into the ceiling, and have the cord so there's about 18" between the lowest point and the ceiling (at least in my case, but I have 10' ceilings) swag chat!
