I worked at Best Buy in the media department for the holiday season 2005, I remember that DVD very well. That was an odd experience. My direct supervisor hated me because I refused to sell Napster subscriptions, he would specifically ask me to target grandmas to suggest they buy them as stocking stuffers. At the time a lot of people would come in with lists of things to buy for presents, and they would start asking where everything was, and I'd just ask them for their list, and I'd go and grab everything for them. They absolutely loved it. Again, my supervisor, not so much. He would "punish" me by only scheduling me for 2 or 3 hours a week, but I didn't need the job so I didn't care. Only, I was the only person who knew how to alphabetize, so my department and store managers loved me. They would call me on my days off around 10am asking if I could come in, letting me pick my own hours. It absolutely infuriated my direct supervisor, especially that I usually got my 40 hours per week despite him scheduling me otherwise.

One of the upcoming VS titles is Thriller: A Cruel Picture. They're now advertising that this release will have two official theatrical cuts. I don't actually know what the difference is between the two. Is one of them the version without the porn?

If I recall correctly those hardcore scenes were an afterthought and were just put in there later to make the film more lurid. I don't like it. They add nothing to the movie and actually gently caress up the pacing a little. Is there anything missing from the non-porn version besides the hardcore and close up of the eye stabbing?

Looks like the non-hardcore version is the AIP “They Call Her One Eye” cut, so there’s about 20 minutes cut out from the uncut version.

I haven't been able to find much about it but supposedly there's a version of the movie that's three minutes shorter than the uncut version. I don't know what's edited from that. It's surprisingly difficult to find out how many versions of the movie there are and what exactly they consist of.

I wonder if the Vinegar Syndrome release of Thriller is going to be any different than the Synapse release that also came out this year, as far as the quality of restoration goes. I trust both Synapse and VS to put out good poo poo, and I already bought the Synapse version so I guess there's no need to get the VS version?

https://www.gruv.com/product/the_alfred_hitchcock_classics_collection_4k_ultra_hd_uhd GRUV has the first Alfred Hitchcock UHD set (with Rear Window, Vertigo, Psycho, and The Birds) for only $38.99 and there's also a 20%-off coupon on your first order. All four are fantastic discs. Vertigo and Psycho have both original mono tracks in addition to DTS-X mixes. Vertigo received a new remix for the Blu-ray that finally fixed all the bad foley issues. Psycho also has the option to watch the genuine 1960 cut, as well as the slightly trimmed "official" version (11 seconds difference). Just be warned that unless current pressings use a plain case, the packaging is fairly terrible and one might want to find replacement cases.

This is VS’s official word on the matter: quote:We've already spilled a lot of ink on our exclusively licensed edition of THRILLER, but it bears repeating: we are currently working on a new and exclusive restoration of the film from its never before accessed uncensensored original camera negative, which will present the film looking bigger and better than it ever has before. Personally I’m taking them at their word that this will be the superior release, and I’ve decided to wait. Honestly I would expect it will be worth the double-dip for the film’s biggest fans.

I don't know the specifics but there's some kind of wacky poo poo with the rights to that movie which is why both companies have a blu-ray at the same time. I think there's a minor pissing contest over which one is the "official" release. The recent announcement about it from VS made a little passive aggressive jab about this. edit: Beaten to the punch. Anyway the VS one already appeared to be the fancier release and I don't already have the movie so I was just going to get that. CPL593H fucked around with this message at 20:55 on Mar 19, 2022 |

I'll just watch the blu I have and if for whatever reason it seems particularly bad or lacking then maybe I'll get the VS release. Honestly I forgot that VS were even the guys who announced it last year, I just saw the recent Synapse release on Amazon and grabbed it assuming it was the right one. I'm not a big enough "fan" of the movie to care that much

Look at the difference between the slip cover and the actual box art here. It's a pretty great visual on how the box art of movies are designed to promote the film in the VHS era versus now. I'd never actually seen or heard of the movie but it sounds kind of interesting and I got it at Dollar tree so for a buck I decided "Why not?". I've had some good cheap blu-ray finds recently. I found a sealed copy of Stop Making Sense in a thrift store as well as (not sealed) copies of FW Murnau's Sunrise, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, and Kung Fu Hustle.

I’d kill for painted posters to make a comeback, but they never will because photoshop collages are cheaper and easier. Especially for re-releases.

I saw that movie last year and it was great, definitely an underappreciated movie that nobody really discusses much. James Spader is great as the slimeball sociopathic villain. It kinda felt like a cross between Legend of Billie Jean and Straw Dogs, maybe a bit of Class of 1984.

Yeah the VHS box art looks a lot more exciting and tells us a lot more about the vibe of the film. The floating heads cover is incredibly generic and doesn't say anything. There's no effort involved. I know why the floating heads caught on but for movies like this it's not really a selling point. Also, I know it's an outlier but Criterion gave us an amazing painted cover. I don't know why they won't just use original posters like they did for this Mill Creek disc.

I'm pretty sure most cases are work for hire, but I admit to not being an expert in the matter, just someone who listened to the Poster Boys podcast. Found an interesting (if not frustrating) piece while wading through the wastewater that is Google. At any rate, Criterion does their own art because it's part of their visual identity, in my opinion.
