Just because there isn't an overflow hole doesn't mean the faucet was installed in one. They just didn't necessarily have them in that time period. I'm in a big apartment building from the 1930s, and none of the tubs have overflow holes. My parents' house is late '20s, and they don't have them either.

Sometimes they’re on the long side of the tub, too. And yeah, handheld shower heads are nice for washing hair in the bath, for example.

My grandma's house was like that. The first house I bought from the 40s was like that. Everyone just used to take baths and someone did a quick addon to give a useful sprayer. I'd imagine if you ask 80yo folks now they still maybe choose baths over showers?

It was 3 very old houses combined into one, you're going to get some weird poo poo. They valued keeping the old stuff over ripping it out and putting up drywall. You can see the bottom is on the level with the floor on the right, it would've worked originally

Maybe the lighting was just that lovely, and the photographer couldn't figure out a way to fix things that didn't involve lamps in places that screw up the staging. Would that be better or worse?
