As I understand it, 155mm guns (or similar calibres) are more or less the limit at which humans can load those guns without mechanical assistance but I could be horribly mistaken and I own that. Regardless, feeding those guns for a prolonged amount of time, or having to setup, fire a couple of salvos and then break down in a godawful hurry to relocate would also be an immense drain.

Broad question from a clueless goon, but what does artillery accomplish in 2022 that isn't better accomplished by other weapons? Amount of fire that can be directed on an area? Cost to operate and ability to stockpile ammo?

Same as it's been for millennia: it lets you cheaply and quickly kill a lot of people and break a lot of poo poo from afar without exposing as many people to enemy fire.

I wasn't artillery, but I was an 81mm mortarman, and yeah, that's just about how I remember it. Indirect fire weapons mean you can target and hit the enemy without exposing yourself. Mortars are one thing, but with artillery you can be dozens of miles away and turn entire acreage into the moon. I can't think of any modern weapon that can do that. https://nationalinterest.org/blog/reboot/how-far-can-us-artillery-shoot-196750 [cite for range numbers] VVV Edit: Yeah, I didn't consider air power in that "into the moon" bit because air can certainly do that. But great point about the reaction time between air and artillery. Eason the Fifth fucked around with this message at 22:59 on Apr 27, 2022 |

To add to the above, Airpower can do most things artillery does but that has it's own drawbacks. It is more expensive. If you don't have air supremacy it's far from certain that it can be available in a certain location, Artillery also tends to be closer attached to the forward units, so it will most likely be able to respond faster than friendly air assests, especially if your military hasn't got the massive air power the US has.

BeastOfExmoor posted:Broad question from a clueless goon, but what does artillery accomplish in 2022 that isn't better accomplished by other weapons? Amount of fire that can be directed on an area? Cost to operate and ability to stockpile ammo? The key phrase here is "better accomplished by other weapons." Other weapons can do what artillery does, but nowhere near as fast or cheap. Like, a swarm of drones could more or less duplicate it, but they carry much smaller bombs and take a lot longer to get to the target.

BeastOfExmoor posted:Broad question from a clueless goon, but what does artillery accomplish in 2022 that isn't better accomplished by other weapons? Amount of fire that can be directed on an area? Cost to operate and ability to stockpile ammo? According to the Ukrainians, about 80% of the casualties on each side in this conflict are from artillery. So basically it's better for almost everything. There're intercepts from russians saying that they've never even seen a ukrainian with a gun the entire time they've been in country.

Even at 750 mph it takes time to get a plane even 25 miles, idthe area, id the target, engage the target. Long range arty cuts out most of that wait. Having a hovering bomber waiting to shitout a missile at a gps pinpointed/lazed target isnt something much of the world can rely on like the us can

Soylent Pudding posted:In general terms how do main battle tanks fair when on the receiving end of artillery? Nothing likes a direct hit, otherwise it depends a lot on the size of the artillery. Generally, a tank can survive well within the kill zone of most artillery shells. With that said, if you're in a tank and Artie is dropping all around you, it's time to displace, not hunker down. As for what artillery does better than anything else artillery has a potential to be applied until you run out of shells or your crews get tired and that generally takes a long long time to happen. On a per dollar basis artillery is more destructive than anything else. On a per man hour air basis artillery is more destructive than anything else. On an absolute scale only nuclear weapons best artillery for total destructive potential. A.o.D. fucked around with this message at 23:27 on Apr 27, 2022 |

I think people also underestimate what modern arty is capable of. You typically only see firing footage from one side. The other side of those guns is completely unfathomable if you've never seen. That's before we get into the super hosed up things like mine deployers and thermobarics.

One of those rounds will kill anyone within 50 meters of where it lands. If one hit at the 50 yard line of an American football field it could kill everyone on it and injure anyone in the stands. You saw video of one gun. A USMC arty battery has 6 (4 are usually on the firing line). Hekk fucked around with this message at 00:15 on Apr 28, 2022 |

Not related to this conflict, but the Army's new ERCA system is nasty.
