Every time I see nuDeadspin try its hand at social commentary it always looks like “we fed 1,000 Gawker articles into a neural network and THIS is what happened.”

Crafting a provocative take is an artform unto itself, but it's something modern Deadspin seems to think can just be brute-forced. I mean, yes, this is by definition a provocative headline, but not in a way that really invites engagement by anyone. It can really only be gawked at.

Someone should make a media group about that.

That headline is literally like any other number of headlines I see them when they write about social issues. And they pretty much never stopped talking about social issues and poo poo, just the quality of said writing being in question.

One of the greatest ever baseball writers, Roger Angell, has passed away at the spritely age of 101. A link to a commemoration of him at the New Yorker, where he wrote for 75 (!) years. Angell on being a fan: https://twitter.com/rog61/status/1527757398924054531

Scaramouche posted:Don't worry guys, Whitlock is on the case Yeah, that’s the loving textbook definition of a hero - hanging back while a psycho slaughters a room full of children because you feel UNAPPWECIATED. Gee, I’d love to do something about this mass shooting of a bunch of second-graders but what if no one says “thank you?” Goddamn sociopath opinion, gently caress you Whitlock.

I found the beginning anecdote that takes up like 2/3rds of the piece pretty tedious tbh.

I mean, it's a personal essay about a tragedy where political analysis is useless because the status quo will remain, but also I understand that I'm in a position where it would particularly resonate. Probably not for everyone, but I'm guessing we would probably agree it's a better take than "It's BLM's fault for hurting the cops' fee-fees and making them less heroic."

I thought it was a good essay, and the anecdote at the beginning provides a good contrast between the kind of terror you can protect your kids from, the kind they learn to overcome as they get older, and the kind of terror that we're evidently not allowed to protect our kids from because 2A hardliners

Albino Squirrel posted:Yeah, it's pretty great. Got the emotions rising, maybe because I have two kids. I'm just so relieved that I don't have to worry about school shootings I live here and have two kids, and I don't worry about school shootings. At least not as much as the things far more likely to harm my kids, like drowning or car accidents, etc. It's more likely than dying from a fall, but not by much.

Knew the username sounded familiar. I wonder what the breakdown is on how people feel about the piece based on whether they have kids or not. What I liked about it was that it wasn't specific to shootings, but the thing that all partens must face, which is that at some point they won't be able to make the bad things go away for their kids, and in doing so they will break their kids' hearts. Anyway, sports columnists should definitely stick to sports, is what I'm saying.

I posted a link to this in the baseball thread too, but it's David Roth talking about writing about baseball so I think it probably belongs in here too, especially since it's not maddening/depressing. https://twitter.com/david_j_roth/status/1530289355658493952?s=20&t=dl0zmTOiTd8XLXrLkMiRXg
