It wasn't really as cool as you might think. There was a lot of friends spell/rat charms/strength spell stacking to pass CHA/INT/STR checks and doing quests in a specific order and coming back way later for some.

Nevertheless, I would like to see it if only as a sort of mental exercise in optimisation.

I just paid my $2.49 Dorn fee and am enjoying his quest, the which I started bc I read that there's a certain treasure item available during.

in other news, per usual I really want to kill Drizzt this run but it turns out all of the old cheese methods have been fixed. I'm going to have to go get more potions and regroup or something.

Was using Rasaad in my current playthrough and I forgot that he can just leave your party at the end of his quest in bg2 depending on what options you choose. I thought about reloading but just said gently caress it and let him go because he seemed happy with the choice. Pretty sure I was gonna replace him with Sarevok by TOB anyways so I'll just roll with Mazzy for now or something.

It took him a game and a half but he did finally become useful mid bg2. Still fragile as hell but he was at least hitting hard finally.

I should do a suffering run where I play a monk. I kind of wish there wasn't as many racial restrictions in the 2E ruleset because a halfling monk slaying gods sounds hilarious to play.

Monks are definitely a class for those who enjoy suffering. Imo they're the weakest class in the game. They start weak and while they do get a lot better at higher levels they still never end up as strong as a fighter (mostly because of inability to use Improved Haste). And of course their AC is always garbage and the no helmet thing means you explode into tiny pieces if you get crit.

They're still fun to play and viable but they're definitely weak.

I feel like they should get some kind of damage reduction or immunity to crits at high levels. Or make their AC scale even better. I dunno. They could use a little something more to get parity with the other melee classes. As it stands they're the weakest fighter ethos class by far.

It's part of the EE Tweaks package.

It's a component of the G3 Tweaks Anthology.

Most of the old mods have been updated for EE (although you need to do some extra stuff if you have SoD installed on BG1), so all the old ones are there like BG1 NPC project and Unfinished Business. Those are the only two that I would endorse even tentatively, content mods tend to be very inconsistent in quality. That's obviously subject so others might have some recommendations.

I like BG1 NPC project for the most part but it can be hit or miss. They somehow managed to make Imoen even more annoying than she is in the original game, for example. But some of the other NPC dialogue feels pretty decent (Jaheira's for example). And there are some nice quests they add which give decent items and are generally solid.

Tweak anthology let's you remove racial class restrictions and also make it so non humans can dual class or let humans multiclass.

Bards of any kind rule. Being able to cast spells at such a high level is awesome for dispel magic and skull trap and stuff like that. And their buffs last so long and are cast at such a high level that they're probably the very best tanks in the game.

Then at high levels you get fun stuff like use any item and the high level bard song.

My last playthrough was as a blade and yeah can confirm that bards definitely get a bad rep from... Somewhere. I dunno. But with the right buffs and a narrow hallway nobody is getting by a blade in defensive spin.

Bout the only complaint you could really have is even with the bonuses their melee capability still isn't exactly stellar. It's decent enough but nothing to write home about.

But imo they're best used as tanks anyways. Any dps they provide is a bonus.

I'm afraid so.
Bard reputation suffers a lot from being introduced by Garrick in BG1, who has such terrible stats that he has like a coin flip chance to just destroy any spell scroll he tries to learn while also having no constitution OR strength bonus, and less charisma than either Imoen or Jaheira, so he’s not even competitive as a shopping discount. He’s so dumb that even a potion of genius still only gets him to a 75% success rate on scrolls. He also arrives too early for you to have any good wands, which is the only stat-independent thing he can actually do well.

A good stat line for a bard would probably be max Dex and 16 Con to tank with, and high intelligence for scroll memorization, dumping wisdom and strength, and making up for the strength by just getting the Strength spell buff from the party cleric early, and just wearing a strength belt later.

Garrick by contrast has poo poo Con so he has crap hp, has invested a ton of points in strength while still being one point too low to actually get any benefits from it, and also wasted tons on the one stat that does nothing for bards; wisdom.

An actually appropriately managed player bard, while not being best-in-slot at any one task, absolutely fulfills the role of the second-best-at-everything guy. Garrick is so bad that he can’t do anything competently.

Imo they actually are best in slot tanks, or close to it. Their buffs last forever due to their high caster level thanks to their fast progressing xp table. They only get up to level 6 spells but that includes all the important defensive buffs like stoneskin, mirror image, protection from magical weapons, and spell immunity/spell shield etc. If you pick a Blade you additionally get defensive spin which will easily put you at ac cap making it very hard for a lot of enemies to remove your stoneskins and images.

Their offense is inferior to a Fighter/Mage but defensively they're fantastic. Struggling to think of a class that tanks better than them.

I just feel like most people don't know that so they try to use them as second rate dpsers or casters. If you do that, they'll contribute and all but the real place they shine as is tanks imo.

And then at very high levels you get high level bard song and use Vhailors to have your clone sing with simulacrum thus freeing up your bard to do whatever.

It does take them until probably early bg2 to come online as a good tank though since you need level 10 for Stoneskin.

Blades have poopy Thaco progression, but they are a great 5th or 6th man and complement a sorcerer or specialist caster very well. I would say prioritise starting with 18 Str and then give them the Str manual to bump it to 19 to aid their offence. Note that I don't play with the moronic scribe spell failure bollocks myself, so int is not a big deal to me.

Fake Edit: Isn't Protection from Magical Weapons level 7?

Another Fake Edit: Isn't there a mod to give very high level bards more advanced spell progression, in accordance with some source book that I never read and whose name I can't remember?

It's level 6. Bards certainly can fill a complementary caster role and do well with it. I just think the best thing they do is tank. Doesn't mean they can't do other things well though. They've got arcane magic. Any class that can use that is versatile as hell.

Nope, 6th. Protection from normal weapons is level 5, so there is a sense of progression, even!

I always like the frost ray ability. It only uses 1 charge, does solid damage and hits one target with no friendly fire; just a good all-around ability for burning down one dangerous mob in a game where so many things will roast your enemies but also your friends.
