Where do you think the majority of singles come from

People buying cases of boxes for less than retail, cracking them, and selling them. And from people buying booster boxes and selling the singles they don't want to keep, but those people are losing money compared to just buying singles... but some people enjoy the rush of gambling. Or from people drafting and then reselling their picks to do more drafts.

My friend is an online MtG seller, he got collector booster boxes for $200/each and is cracking and selling singles. Someone walking into a store and paying $275 has a significantly higher cost per card and will lose money

my one gripe with new Capenna (besides the gross color imbalance in draft and the complete failure of the three-color theme on which the set was designed) is that there was no color/pizza pie joke card. easiest layup in the world! mama mía madonn'

But still a decent breakdown

I don't think most people actually understand this, because they are gambling. They believe that This Time it's the big score. They don't think of what they're doing with their money in raw economic terms, and maybe if they thought about it, they'd change their habits and not spend $350 on a booster box.

I like to pay for magic to gamble but I spend that money assuming I will get none of it back. I'm buying the entertainment of gambling. But people are stupid, or are addicts, or children, and they don't really understand what's going on.

Picked up a couple collector boxes today and they were not great but not the worst I guess. One particularly disappointing pack had a foil and non-foil borderless Gifts Ungiven. I’ve got 2 more boxes on the way so let’s see if I learn a lesson this time.

Borderless Foil:
Kozilek, Butcher of Truth
Assassin’s Trophy
Phyrexian Altar
Panharmonicon
Grim Flayer
Pithing Needle
Kolagahn’s Command
Gifts Ungiven

Borderless:
Bloom Tender
Smothering Tithe
Force of Negation
Teferi’s Protection
Gifts Ungiven
Bloodforged Battleaxe
Grim Flayer
Surgical Extraction

Etched Foil:
Phyrexian Altar
Allosaurus Shepherd
Skullbriar
Anima
Atla Palani
Dack’s Duplicate
Tariel
Leonin Arbiter

Thought this was gonna be more about the failure of the set to sufficiently draw on the various perspectives of modernism on some Marshall Berman angle but calling out the surface level over utilization of Mafia stereotypes is cool too.

Agree that angels being in charge of the Capenna families would've been cooler.

I'm leaning toward buying a collector booster box, but I bought a couple draft boosters today just to kind of hold me over. Pulled a GAAIV, Green Sun's Zenith, Twinflame, and some lovely Dragon's Maze chaff.

Definitely didn't get a big hit but I did want a GAAIV and GSZ is a good card to have multiples of.

I feel like being a commander player makes buying packs feel like a much better value. I have something like 30 decks so anything decent I pull can generally find a home.

The dangerous part being that feeling like a better value doesn’t translate into actually being a better value.

It does help that a large number of the chase cards are really really good in commander. A lot of the precon reprints are duds imo, but a lot of the top pulls are high demand cards for high power/cEDH-tier commander.

(it also helps that you technically only need one copy of anything, rather than playsets)

What cards in this set are actually in high demand for Modern/Legacy/Pioneer? I haven't played Modern in around 5 years now so I haven't been keeping track.

Jiro
Jan 13, 2004

A card like Allosaurus Shepherd is a huge chase card for EDH and slots in to any Elf Tribal anything deck.

Same with Mana Drain, Wrenn and Six, your Mana Vaults, Top, Dockside, Teferi's Protection, etc etc. It's a shame they still haven't reprinted the allied color fetches like ever. Would have slotted right in here nicely.

if there's one thing Rudy does the best, it's that his box opening videos are lightning fast(past the first one where he goes in blind). usually two entire booster boxes in like 10 minutes.

Box report. It will come as likely no surprise that from a pure value perspective, I took a bath on this box. Paid a little over $300, got maaaaaybe $150 back in borderless/mythics/rares/foils? At least at the current (low) price points.

Borderless cards (23 total):

Mythics (9 total):

Now, I know what I'm going in for when I spring for packs or boxes. It's a gamble, and that's part of the fun for me. I'm not looking to sell these off and make money, I like to collect. And there are some cards in here that I'm psyched for, either from a perspective of really wanting them (Emiel, Smothering Tithe) or loving the borderless art (Dragonlord Dromoka, Panharmonicon). And finally, almost all of these cards come from periods where I wasn't buying, so like 98% of the set is cards I don't have.

All of this is to say, I'm not at all bothered by the outcome of the box. But let this show you that if you're on the fence and don't have lots of good reasons to buy into this set, you should not get a box (certainly not at $400 or whatever). Just get the singles you want sometime in the next month or so.

Edit: also I'm going to be an absolute dick in Commander with that Grand Arbiter Augustin IV. But how can I resist using him with sweet art like that??

Right, they apparently come back after the story. There was just a big civil war and the leaders of both sides are dead or left the plane, there are old phyrexians outside the city and a bunch of angels show up, what does that mean for the 5 families? What are the angels going to do? Where did the Devil's go? What's going to happen to all the people who were dependent on Halo now that the statues are alive again? Is Urabrask still waiting for Elspeth to come talk to him? New Capena as a setting just didn't make any sense and the most important thing happens off screen.
