That is awesome and better than the real set!

Extremely good. I saw a Classic Space recolor of the Lightyear ship on Brothers-Brick a week or two ago, but I like yours better, I think.

I have been working on another car because of course I have been. You know what? I do so many of these that I'm constantly thinking along the lines of "Okay, so what do I do to switch this one up? How do I make it unique and different than the previous ones?" And for this 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner, I had a couple ideas.

One was making redline tires by using a tire stretching technique with a red rubber band between a Speed Champions tire and an undersized City-style hub. Another was angling the whole tail back on a gentle grade. Now, I've tried this before in the past, but it didn't turn out super well, so I tried a totally different technique this time around, yielding a pretty subtle 4 degree pitch on the rear deck.

Despite my attempts to make this build fresh and new, there are a few recycled elements. The headlight assembly is basically straight off my Ford Falcon. The taillight assembly is copied off my Pontiac GTO. The greenhouse is essentially the same as the one on my Challenger / Cuda. It's kind of amusing that I've done so goddamn many classic American muscle cars, I can just kind of borrow elements as needed.

can you post your build for this? I'm trying to get ideas on how to help my kid convert his mars research shuttle into superhero style stuff. i'm really interested in the xl-15 wings and need to figure out that build, because we have 6 or so of the ATV style wheel axle pieces that the xl15 uses, and he has a zillion vehicles and not enough planes. i just can't tell from the instructions if it's purely decorative or what

what does this accomplish that a couple of 2x6 bricks wouldn't?

I mainly followed instructions for the default set and only veered when I had to. The bottom build you posted serves 2 functions, mainly.
1) it raises the ship so that when it’s laid on a table/surface so that no pressure is exerted on the angled wings.
2) decorative. I’d say do whatever your heart’s content with that fits the design but definitely add that “height” for reason 1.

Lastly, I did not use the 4x4 brick with vertical ridges and a hole in the middle and that affected the crossbar “stand” mount, but that’s easy to get around.

I'm not sure how I missed the original post, but you want acrylic paints. They're durable, pretty generous about applying them, and you can remove the paint at basically any future point. I've got torsos that I (poorly) customized as a teenager with acrylics and I've been able to strip the paint without damaging the figures ~15 years later.

I built the XL-15 ship. It's pretty cool, but the canopy was scratched. That's what I get for opening the box I guess. Not sure why they included the two other minfigs and the cat, I've never seen the movie.

You're not sure why the movie licensed set included figures of characters from the movie?

Do they have something to do with the ship itself? I get they are from the movie, just not sure how they fit in with Buzz Lightyear flying his ship around.

Well, of course I know him.
He's me.
Lego including minifigures of licensed characters not directly related to the subject of the set they’re in has been a thing for well over a decade now.

It’s the easiest way to have every character in minifigure form when you’re only making a certain number of sets.

Veotax

Yeah, there's only three Lightyear sets, so I guess they wanted to spread the characters across all of them.

https://brickset.com/sets/theme-Disney/subtheme-Lightyear

Other than Buzz himself, there's no repeated figures. And the repeated Buzz has less accessories in the 4+ set.

Izzy and Sox (the cat) are also repeated, but Izzy is a main character in the movie alongside Buzz and the second set has her in a completely different suit.

Lightyear wasn’t great, but it was mindless fun and the ship designs are cool.

to further elaborate, you'd probably be best served with specialist miniature paints rather than general purpose acrylics, they're highly pigmented, smooth and formulated to be good for extreme detail. I personally like Vajello, between their model color, mecha, game and metalics ranges they cover a quite ludicrous range of colours, and are readily available in hobby shops.

A little finicky and not for touching/play… but I approve of this alt build.

It used no added parts… stayed within the set. Not being a purist, now that I have built it I may add some internal stabilization and maybe a little more… “finishing” on the back.

Super stoked, though.
