The big difference is also that Star Wars is a really chaste universe because it's a fundamentally prepubescent fantasy, even the dark, forbidden romance of Padme and Anakin culminates in a smooch and a secret wedding. The most prurient part of the six Lucas films is Leila's meme bikini and even that is kind of a child's idea of erotica (peeping on girls at the pool, kisses are gross and humiliating, etc).

My man the oldest zoomers were 2-3 when Phantom Menace came out. The kids you’re thinking of are the young end of the millennial generation.

The prequels got better over time not just because ep 7-9 were trash fires* but because we ended up getting actual good content like the Clone Wars show. The behind the scenes for ep3 is wild too. It’s just 99% free screen and featureless boxes replaced later with CGI.

* ep8 had the silver lining of Holdo doing the exact thing that the rebels should’ve been doing to every imperial fleet and base whenever they were in a battle they couldn’t win. FTL technology means every warp capable ship is now a self contained super powerful single shot mass driver, shields aren’t going to do poo poo against even a single pilot fighter that hits you at even a fraction of the speed of light let alone faster than it.

This is unfortunately offset by nobody tossing Poe out of an airlock or just shooting his rear end for that bomber run poo poo. because he was supposed to die and they changed their minds while filming ep7 he ends up being worse and worse.

Yeah I don't know if I care about the show but the Dance has a bunch of pretty interesting characters and some neat twists and turns (and, correct me if I'm wrong, like WAY less rape. More incest though so like... gently caress). Since apparently Martin is going to be looming over production in the same way he did for the early seasons of the main show I guess it'll probably be alright.

The more time he spends on set is less time for him to write follow-up Mercy chapters so it's basically HBO's moral duty to have him around at this point.

Honestly, I think there is potential for this series to be a lot of fun, if not actually qualitatively good in some respects. I’ve been fairly excited ever since it was first reported that Matt Smith was cast in the role of Daemon Targaryen - because if there’s a charismatic anti-hero from The Dance of the Dragons it’s definitely him.

I don’t think a series like this works unless you have some really dynamic, exciting, unpredictable, charismatic and most importantly fun figure at the center of everything. This show’s Tyrion Lannister, more or less? The one who gets all the killer lines and (ideally) delivers them with aplomb. Obviously, for a role like that you need an actor who can actually do all of that stuff, and I think anyone who watched Matt Smith’s run as the Eleventh Doctor would agree that he’s actually capable of carrying this show, whether or not he actually does or is even put in a position to do so is still unknown, of course. But the potential is there I think, which is exciting, everything else aside.

I haven't read about the Dance in a while but I don't remember nearly as much hosed-up sexual content, though I don't put it past HBO to add some; the focus of the story is mainly on "this is how the dragons died out." Even the Targaryen incest was mostly limited to Rhaenyra's marriages, and it's heavily implied that her Velaryon husband was gay and their marriage was a sham from day 1.

My question is, if they recognize Daemon as "this show's Tyrion," will they keep in his actual dark deeds (the murder of Jaehaerys, the underage (I think?) lover) or will they lighten those the way they did to keep Tyrion the sympathetic main character?

I never thought that was child-like. She's this fierce independent woman, reduced to a sex slave and chained to a giant slobbering penis. Some classic and deep running themes here. She's also wearing this metal harem girl thing which is right in line with 80s sci-fi porn, and would be appropriate even today at an Erotic Ball ( tame perhaps, but stil... ). And then at the end she turns off the lights and makes the giant penis ejaculate, equating sex to death / kills Harvey / liberates herself from sexual serfdom / abandons her traditional female role as a womb with legs to get back to fighting the giant father penis.

Also people get eaten by a giant vagina dentata / sand anus, which is an excellent lesson on abstinence as well as making sure your sex toys have a flared base. Also AIDS as an emerging threat to the sexual freedom of the 70s.

Even the Targaryen incest was mostly limited to Rhaenyra's marriages, and it's heavily implied that her Velaryon husband was gay and their marriage was a sham from day 1.

Well, Rhaenyra's first marriage (to the homosexual Laenor) was absolutely a sham, and the book states pretty unequivocally that the three children she had from that marriage were all fathered by Harwin "Breakbones" Strong. Given that Rhaenyra, Laenor, and Breakbones are all cast as characters in this first season, I think we can be assured of seeing some of this play out.

Daemon is initially married to Laena, Laenor's sister - both Laenor and Laena die before the start of the actual war, though, and then Daemon and Rhaenyra end up married - they had supposedly had an affair years earlier which caused Daemon to be exiled IIRC. That's some pretty insane incest, since Daemon and Rhaenyra are uncle and niece by blood AND brother and sister by earlier marriages :gonk:

Even funnier to me is that the absurdly incestuous union of Daemon and Rhaenyra produces Aegon III and his brother Viserys, and the rest of the Targaryen dynasty issues from their loins, heh.

quote:

My question is, if they recognize Daemon as "this show's Tyrion," will they keep in his actual dark deeds (the murder of Jaehaerys, the underage (I think?) lover) or will they lighten those the way they did to keep Tyrion the sympathetic main character?

Well, even these relatively "unsympathetic" moments all depend greatly on how the show presents things emotionally, and whether they ultimately come down more on the side of Aegon II and his posse, or Rhaenyra and Daemon and theirs. I tend to think that Rhaenyra and Daemon will ultimately be portrayed as the marginally more sympathetic party. That being the case, I expect that incidents like what happened with Blood and Cheese will be presented more as... horrific and righteous vengeance enacted by Daemon for Rhaenyra's son (murdered by Aemond) which got out of hand. After all, it's not like Daemon himself murders any kids.

And as for his affair with Nettles, I mean... I don't really expect the show to present her as a "child" and would be frankly grossed out if they did, I read her as being a young woman in the book, like 19 or 20? Maybe GRRM intended her to be 15 or 16 and it's just that I mentally age up his characters to be less grossed out, and expect others to as well.
