Ah, thanks; I didn't realize there was another thread for that sort of thing (or at least an active one). I just knew that this thread's readers generally overlapped with the sort of people who would read Cradle.

Still reading the latest cradle book, but I really hope Dross's personality gets fixed. I'm not a fan of the current Dross.

If nothing else, he seems significantly less useful than he had been.

spoiler for that book that you may or may not want to know: it does get fixed and when it does the literal first thing Dross does is pretend to be rear end in a top hat-Dross as a joke

Outcast: I'm a little mixed about this nuke thing. The idea of it as a plot element is fine, but "fantasy race builds a nuke from instructions provided by the gods" is significantly less plausible than "fantasy race builds light bulbs or guns." The story acknowledges the increased difficulty, but doesn't seem to understand that manufacturing nukes would require a ton of materials/equipment just to manufacture the materials necessary; it's not really plausible that you could just get a fantasy race to (relatively) quickly build them using instructions, no matter how effective those instructions might be.

The guns were enough - the Dwarves marching on Field territory with them would constitute a big enough threat on its own.

The biggest technical issue I think would be the force necessary to "smush" the fissile material to supercritical concentration. As for getting the fissile material, mining uraninite is something that can be solved with brute state effort. The big issue is filtering the uraninite, but if the instructions came bundled together with [Filter Fissile Material] spell or ability that is it right there. A [System] type of magic is too soft in its potential applicability to make sense of.

Yeah it's possible to sorta explain if you allow for magic circumventing certain issues, but it just seems unnecessary when the same threat could have been accomplished with more plausible equipment (simply sending an army of utility users with semi-modern military stuff like rifles/artillery/vehicles would have been a big enough threat against anyone except maybe the dragon queen).

It's actually perfect because the terminal said it contacted Virya for the spell content, who is literally an obsessed weeaboo. Who has her own personal planet along with her equally weebed out rival where they watch Isekai stories they make play out over and over. Of COURSE she would give him truck-kun. Common isekai trope has your isekai-ee getting isekai'd by a fatal encounter with a delivery van or similar vehicle. It's not so much an anime trope as a LN one, tbh.

Did “Outcast in Another World” get deliberately review bombed on RoyalRoad? I’ve started reading the KU novel, went to RoyalRoad to see if any chapters are still up to check some comments on the chapter I just read (they aren’t), and then scrolled down to the reviews…. Yikes. I’ve never seen a stranger collection of self-important web serial critics dropping 2 star reviews because they’ve decided the world-building in this self-published isekai doesn’t work… the top review ranting about how the author didn’t focus enough on how the Scouring would involve murdering babies made my eyes rolls up in my head.

I started reading Beneath the Dragoneye Moons after hearing it was review bombed for having the temerity to mention that sexism is a thing that exists and is bad.

It's wild to me that reviews can themselves be reviewed. I get the intention, but the execution seems to just give bad actors more leverage.

Just let yourself become a worthless person!
I’ve heard bad things about RoyalRoad’s ownership itself from various chatter, too, especially around its treatment of stories with queer characters in them. There was a big write-up on the HobbyDrama subreddit a few months back.

I haven’t ever heard this from a really obviously trustworthy source (you’ll notice the Reddit link is to, well, Reddit), but I’ve seen enough smoke that I personally believe it. Hopefully somebody with more knowledge can correct me if I’m mistaken.

That can't be true, like 80% of serials have gay or trans characters. To the point where is it basically a cliche.

A lot of the good ones that are talked about in this thread do, but even among those not even a majority, never mind 80%. And the general population of web serials has an enormous volume of power fantasies featuring male protagonists with several female love interests, virtually none of which get talked about here because they tend to suck.

I feel like I once read one but I'm drawing a blank on the name. It does feel like stories with female protagonists are either majority or at least even split on lesbian or bisexual with female romantic partner protagonists, though. I've always kind of assumed this might be because the site is more popular with male authors/male targeted works and lesbians are hot/writing about kissing a guy is icky are still fairly common sentiments with some.

To be fair, I don't have an issue with stories with non-hetero protagonists. Well, I generally enjoy heterosexual protagonists more for my own reading but I think it's good that webfiction is one of the few mediums that seems to break from the 99% hetero protagonist mold, even if I'm pretty sure gay men are still vastly under-represented.

Okay, my favorite one of these was thread favorite Prac Guide, which had a 'bisexual' protagonist that strangely only wanted to sleep with women for most of the story. She finally had one male relationship, which was more of a one night stand.(unless I forgot something)

I've never gotten a single homophobic comment on Katalepsis, either on Royal Road or elsewhere. That doesn't actually surprise me, because the story clearly advertises itself as lesbian fiction from the word go, and significant portion of the first chapter is about the protagonist crushing on a butch girl. Anyone who starts reading instantly knows what they're in for. I suspect this would be very different if I wrote about gay men. I still get a handful of lovely comments from time to time, but they're from the people with litRPG brainworms complaining the characters aren't 'logical' enough about when to commit violence, or an even smaller number of comments complaining there's too many women and not enough men in the story.

What does surprise is that I've never gotten any transphobic comments or harassment. I actually did a minor subplot recently where I confirmed some trans stuff on screen for a particular fan favourite character, and I was braced for bad times. But nothing happened. A few readers had questions, but that was about it.

RR's continued justification for their removal of LGBT+ tags is that the tags "bring in porn". Simultaneously, the site hosts a bunch of heterosexual porn. The front page of RR currently shows the heterosexual BDSM slavery fantasy "My dungeon life: Rise of the slave harem". This hilariously horny and 100% pornographic BDSM image is front page:
(NWS spoiler)

Sidenote: Her tail. Her clothes. Her skeleton. Lmao.

edit: Apparently the current justification, seamlessly replacing the "porn!!!" one, is that adding LGBT+ tags would make it easier for offsite harassers to target LGBT+ authors. Paternalistic, homophobic nonsense.
