when your country goes to war, usually there is the kind of broad financial support, big spending increases of some kind including industrial nationalization that makes these price shocks tolerable. we are both at war and not at war existing in a superposition of the two wherever it aligns with our policy goals.

Anyone ITT got any recommendations on unions to join?

I'm in financial services so a bit clueless as to whether the smaller (probably more melty) sector-specific unions like Aegis is the right move, or just to go for one of the bigger amalgamated unions like GMB or Unite?

Any experience of being a member of a union that's not recognised by your employer, it's not easy to find good information about how that relationship works apart from in the situations where the poo poo is hitting the fan...

gmb is generally considered the most radical of the primary ones (unison, unite and gmb), while unison is by far the most funded and most accessible if you want to become a steward because of that. i don't know anything about aiegis or whatever but usually it's good advice to pick whatever best serves your interests, so generally professions that have specialized unions are best served there. if you aren't recognized by your employer you have functionally no actual rights which is why you can force recognition in certain circumstances.

iww generally will offer support to unionize anyone but the wobblies are kind of for no hopers in a lot of situations.

Major energy firms are refusing to supply small businesses out of concern that they could go bust, while some are demanding Ł10,000 up front, business owners and industry experts have told the Guardian.

quote:

Teresa Hodgson, landlord of the Green Man pub in Denham, near Uxbridge, was initially told by her supplier SSE that it could not give her a quote for energy because prices were increasing so fast.

“When I did pin them down, they said before we can go any further, we want Ł10,000 deposit,” Hodgson said.

“When I asked why, because they’ve never had an issue with me, they said: ‘We don’t think a lot of pubs are going to make it this year and we need security.’”
