Well, actually, they are called the Navy. They're "kaigun" in the original, which means navy, not marines. What we'd call marines in English would be a different word in Japanese. They have the word "MARINE" plastered on everything because that is the word for navy in some languages. For instance German Kriegsmarine.

You can call them Marines if you want, I don't care, but it's by no means wrong or even 4Kids derived to call them the Navy. :eng101:

Viz translation actually calls them the Navy. But the title of the OP Wiki page is Marines, and most fans talk about them that way. It's a bit of a mess.

Yeah, in English the word marine generally means naval infantry- the guys who jump off boats to fight on land specifically, rather than the people who stay on the boats. It's a distinction the English came up with so I wouldn't say it's solely American. It couldn't really be directly translated back into other languages like some military terms because most other European languages already call their navies some variation of "marine," so it's a pretty much English-only distinction. (Though notably the Japanese do have separate words for naval infantry and boat soldiers, so it's still a relevant distinction in translating One Piece.)

In One Piece the Marines are not amphibious specialists so it's a bit weird to call them Marines, but it's not like anyone's going to be confused and honestly on the balance it's probably more straightforward to call them the Marines since they plaster that word in 20 foot letters all over all their stuff.

But there's also nothing wrong, and a lot pedantically right, about calling them the Navy.

It was Plundersaurus Rex's dream to be the greatest pirate dragon ever.

The Marines are who they send to kill you on land, sometimes by way of sea. The Navy keep the world under a blanket of nuclear suppression/threat. The Army are who they send to occupy land/die en masse. The Air Force kill people with video games, get hosed up, and burn mountains of money.

Every single one of these hate every single other one.

Marines are on a strict diet of crayons and paste, compare the navy who get regular rations.

Off the subject I watched Film Red recently (there’s a subbed camrip floating around online), it was probably one of the better recent One Piece movies overall and most of the major cameos here felt more natural than they did in the last one at least

One question though for others that have watched it, not sure if I missed something or not but was the Sleepless Mushroom that drove Uta insane established earlier in the movie? I don’t remember it being shown prior to Sanji mentioning that she ate it?

Cypher Pol is 100% outside the jurisdiction of the Navy. They may work together at times, but there's a reason that investigator reporting to Sakazuki was a vice admiral and not a CP agent. Sakazuki and the Navy might legitimately be in the dark about what's up with Sabo, but I would strongly bet that Lucci knows exactly what's up and is possibly responsible.

This is where I am with it. Yes, Navy is a much more accurate translation but, like, Marine is right there on thier hats and sails, in english already. Makes it a slam dunk easy decision for me. In my opinion if Viz wants to go the Navy route then they dang well better redraw every panel that has Marine in it to change it to Navy, otherwise theyre half assing it.

Is there a clear timeline of events for what was happening at the Reverie relative to what was happening on Wano? It seemed like the Sabo stuff was going down or had gone down just before the raid started and Lucci was almost at Wano by then.

No, he and Kaku were definitely on one of the Marine boats heading in to gently caress up Wano, the ones that picked up that last CP0 agent and turned around at the last second when they realized Momo wasn't going to bust out the local ancient superweapon.

Eiba

I totally forgot about Lucci heading to Wano.

He still could be involved with the Sabo incident though. After all, the rest of the revolutionaries had time to get Kuma to Momoiro Island. Levely happened sometime after Luffy got to Wano, and the Strawhats were on Wano for basically a month (Full moon while half of them escaped Big Mom, full moon during the raid). By the time they left Wano the Shichibukai had been disbanded and Cross Guild had time to form and send out its fliers. So there's a lot of time there for things to have happened and Lucci to get on a boat.

Didn't they end up running into the remainder of Big Mom's crew that went to Wano.
