Every time I reread Impel Down I have to pause for a minute to wonder where that guy loving came from. How did he even know Ivankov was there, or that level 5.5 existed? Was this a long term revenge scheme or just a one in a million opportunity for revenge? Was he already a prisoner or just the one fucker breaking into the place who actually managed a low profile?

I think they had the marching band perform OP songs as part of a tie-in, that might be part of why. I remember hearing something to that effect. Still weird, obviously.

I like how it's impossible to tell by his expression if he's pro-Israel, pro-Palestine, or simply thinking what he could do with the power of a trip to 5 Guys.

(A real fan looking to change things would take Luffy to a Brazilian Steak House. Possibly a nice Chicken joint.)

The only non-humans we've seen in the marines are giants, im pretty sure

If we can draw a line from navy to government to nobles then that definitely tracks, although that just makes it even more obvious that giants are important somehow.

Depends on whether Long Arms and Long Legs are considered human. I'm pretty sure we've seen at least one of each. Also there's Saldeath, the Blugori, and some other people in Impel Down who may or may not be humans or technically Marines.

Marines all seem to be humans or giants as far as I can remember. Shuzo from Film Z is a Longarm, but of course that’s non-canon. Guernica of CP0 is a Longarm, but CP0 aren’t Marines.

This shouldn’t be surprising, though. Humans, giants, and fishmen/mermen seem to be the only races with very large populations in the blue seas; the various groups of winged people live mainly on the sky islands, which are fairly isolated from the blue seas, and other races like Minks seem to mostly live on one island.

Honestly despite not having much in-universe presence, Elbaf and the Giant Pirates indirectly play a huge part in the history of One Piece.

A century ago, the Giant Pirates were THE pirate crew to fear. This was decades (maybe centuries, given that previous captains Jarul and Jord were like 300 years old around the time Big Mom was a kid) before Roger and Rocks and Whitebeard, presumably before the pirate power creep set in and giants unfortunately became a victim of jobbing.

Dorry and Brogy getting into a fight that eventually caused the crew to disband resulted in the following things.

1. Mother Caramel works with the Marines to infiltrate Elbaf by stopping a execution of the remnants of the Giant Pirates.
> Moved by her actions, the giants allow her to live in Elbaf where she opens an orphanage and gains a reputation as a saint.
> Mother Caramel's good PR with the giants eventually leads to John Giant (the vice admiral) become the first ever giant to join the Marines.
> Mother Caramel takes in a girl with uncontrollable strength and imparts on her some words that become the girl's driving motivation in life.
> That girl becomes Big Mom, one of the Four Emperors.

2. Oimo and Kashii decide to go looking for their captains Dorry and Brogy some 50 years after the disbanding.
> They end up captured by the Marines.
> Marines trick them into believing that Dorry and Brogy were captured and that they'd let the former captains go if Oimo and Kashii worked for them as gatekeepers for 100 years.
> The two accept the offer and serve for 50 years.
> The Straw Hats and Galley-La Company and Franky Family Alliance attack Enies Lobby, and Oimo and Kashii learn the truth from Sniper King.
> Enraged at having been fooled, the two turn against the Marines and join the Alliance, and provide integral to the fight (they bore the brunt of the Buster Call attacks on the Alliance, which allowed Pauly to save everyone and keep them from falling into the massive pit).

3. Dorry and Brogy continue their fight for a century.
> The Straw Hats come across them and get to know them.
> Ussop is taken with the giants' way of life and is inspired by them to travel to Elbaf one day.
> Mr. 3 and other Baroque Works members scheme to take down Dorry, Brogy, and the Straw Hats, but ultimately fail.
> Mr. 3 is abandoned by Crocodile for his failure and ends up in Impel Down where he eventually meets up with Luffy and Buggy, becoming an integral part of the breakout. (Okay this part's a bit of a stretch.)

4. The young giant (like 18 years old, which is 9 in giant years) Hajrudin desires to become a member of the Giant Pirates one day.
> Hajrudin witnesses Jorul (one of the two captains of the Giant Pirates prior to Dorry and Brogy) die after an attack from Charlotte Linlin (future Big Mom), and is enraged when she's allowed to let go, lamenting at how the pride of Elbaf has fallen so much from its glory days.
> Hajrudin eventually leaves Elbaf to work for the Warlord Buggy alongside some other giants, becoming the biggest earners in Buggy's Delivery.
> Hajrudin participates in the Colosseum in Dressarosa, intending on claiming the Mera Mera Fruit for even more power.
> Instead, due to Doflamingo's machinations, he and the rest of the combatants are turned into dolls, but freed by "God" Ussop.
> This motivates him to help out the Straw Hats and become one of their allies as one of Luffy's self-proclaimed sons.
> Hajrudin decides to revive the Giant Pirates by himself as the New Giant Pirates, and leaves Buggy's Delivery.
> Without their biggest earners, Buggy's Delivery starts losing a ton of money, leaving Buggy with no funds to pay back Crocodile.
> In a desperate attempt to save himself, Buggy offers himself and his crew to Crocodile, who accepts.
> Buggy becomes the unwilling figurehead leader of Cross Guild after his overly-devoted men make posters that feature him as the leader.
