The toenail rip is pretty loving gnarly in the anime, skip it for sure if you don't like that kind of stuff at all

Why does everyone think I'm going to get in trouble?

If that kinda thing hurts you on a visceral level, definitely skip that fight, even the palette change does little to mask how loving painful that bit is.

I'm really annoyed this section ends RIGHT when things are about to get interesting now that I finished it. You get the "Araki just saw Memento" stuff, then CMoon appears and, ugh.

This release contains possibly the worst grouping of Stand battles in the series. This is right where I got fatigue and now I'm remembering why I liked 5 more than 6; there's just a huge drop in fun of Stand battles in this section. Two auto Stands that work against the user in a way, invisible zombies, eh. On the flip side, this us where we were getting best ever Stand fight, train fight, in 5.

Animation isn't helping much either. The flip side is that the animation and lack of bad translation helps the character stuff and Joleyne so much that it's now better than 5 just because of what is happening around the Stand battles. I read both back with bad translations but 6 contains such better character work that I'm finally preferring it over 5.

the only weak fight in this stretch is dragon’s dream tbqh. The ultra security arc rules and Jailhouse lock rules.

And that, as much as anything else, led to my drinking problem.
The forshadowing at the end with Pucci is an anime addition, right? It doesn't really make sense since C-Moon just messes with gravity, not time.

nope, that was in the manga

the way I interpret it is that the potential for Made in Heaven was awakened in him even though it hasn’t fully evolved yet.

but the real explanation is probably that Araki didn’t plan C-Moon at first but then realized how OP Made in Heaven would be and decided to add C-Moon as a stopgap so that there could be more of a back-and-forth in the final fight

I didn't like the solution to jailhouse lock; it cam e off too rear end-pully when the lead up was super creative. The one reflection part is fun; the binary stuff is just weird and isn't really fitting what's going on.

The boat ride fight is a worse version of the part 5 "can't talk" fight with another weird resolution with frog brain. Diver Down is a bit of a bad Stand to write around until everything goes super crazy.

The good parts of this section are the character interactions and that it contains a lot of Dio/Pucci stuff. But just seen on its own in this little 13 episode or whatever bubble kind of sucks.

Watched until the Death 13 fight now, Lali-Ho! Part 3 is really god drat good now, but man it had a rough start!

Its obvious Araki was trying something new and it took some time to get it right. The intro in jail and the way Jotaro’s stand was introduced was really cool, but the Hierophant fight was just a mess. It’s a painting power, no wait its a possession power, no wait it’s a tentacles thing, eh gently caress it have some projectiles. The beetle fight on the airplane was annoying and dumb as hell. At this point every protagonist other than Joseph is also kind of a muscular character-less furrowed-eyebrows face so that’s not helping things.

But what I thought was the worst part was Polnareff vs Avdol which was just a pokemon fight with dumb rear end powers being pulled out of the butt. It was literally two dudes with their hands in their pockets smirking while their pokemon trade fire and piercing attacks. Boring, dumb, ergh, what happened to my JoJo’s? At this point I realized Hamon had some limits but it did make the fights really physical, up-close and intense, and with logical ways of winning.

Well that was until I saw the underwater fight which was just insufferable and won the Shittiest Fight prize, it made me almost give up on the series, plus it finished off with Star Finger which is just, no. No.

The abandoned fright ship was the first sign of life (other than the CHILD PORN!!) and the idea that Stands could be things or concepts is pretty cool.

It’s when they get to India that the wheels finally hit the ground and we’re back to kick rear end JoJo’s. Hol Horse and Hanged Man were a villain dream team, Avdol’s death came out of nowhere and the way it causes Polnareff to realize what a bad teammate he was was incredible, but what blew my mind was when Hanged Man jumped into the kid’s eye. Finally it felt like battles were up-close, personal and logical battles again.

The Justice battle was great, just the idea that it’s about figuring out in time who the user is. The Lovers battle was genius.

From there it just gets better and better so far!

Are there any reviews of All Star Battle R that specifically go into how the gameplay has improved compared to the original? Or if anyone here has played both versions of the game and wants to give their thoughts that’d be nice too.

Apparently Pucci currently only uses White Snake in All Star Battle R. A separate version of him that has C-Moon and Made In Heaven, as well as the Kennedy Space Center stage, are gonna be free DLC at some point down the line. I guess to avoid stepping on the anime’s toes by spoiling the whole finale.

you should ask this in the anime thread so that at least someone will actually be talking about the Stone Ocean anime in the Stone Ocean anime thread instead of relitigating the usual extremely tired debates from the previous parts.

Yeah, Araki sometimes has a phase early on in a part where he establishes a major character’s Stand powers, then significantly changes them, mostly because of him realizing that those initial powers would significantly screw up his ideas for future story beats if left as-is.

Yeah early part 3 is reeeaaally rough. Hanged Man feels like where Araki realized how creative he can be with stand powers and he kinda goes wild with it from there, with fights turning into puzzles rather than who can punch harder. You're through the worst of it now and it's pretty much all smooth sailing save for a few ehh fights here and there.

Imo if you can make it through the early part 3 slump, you're in the clear for the entirety of the rest of the series.

I'd have to dig out the PS3 again to compare some of this, but from memory...

- R simplified the controls a little. Not a bad thing, it's more in line with how Tekken has some "X+Y = easier combo command" shortcuts.
- A giant change that led to us buying it: characters are all unlocked at the start. No loving around in ASB mode if you want more than 5 Jojos to battle with in versus, ASB is solely for unlocking art/costumes/taunts now.
- Strikers! You can pick a striker to summon in battle, it tells you when you're choosing what each person is going to use (like close range attack, long range, "tricky", etc.)
- I do not recall offhand if the stone mask characters were locked down like they are in this new game (if someone is playing as a vampire, roughly half the stages in the game can't be played on for sun reasons... cool for lore but boy you're stuck with a lot of early series arenas as a result)
- As was mentioned, they removed a few Stone Ocean bits that would spoil the manga, but that was announced as coming back at no cost later.
- Some localization changes to match releases that hit the west since the original. Amusingly enough, only two characters from part 7+ are renamed, one of whom I think is for UI reasons (D4C), the other is Scary Monsters = Frightening Monsters. Everyone else is just untouched. Tusk, Soft & Wet, etc, go nuts.
- The AI seems way more "I can perfect guard, fucker" than before in ASB mode but I also haven't played those fights in years and I remember them sucking at the time too. Possibly just me being rusty.

I'unno, if there's anything specific you want me to check on I can do that. I'll look for the PS3, it's probably still in a box, we just moved last month.

Haha, absolutely. This was the point at which me and my husband just looked at each other and went "Do we want to?.."
I'm glad we continued it because yeah, the fight immediately after this showcases how Stands can be used for literally any story you can think of and then the story just gets good immediately after.
Watching it back, the start of part 3 isn't even that rough, with both Hierophant and Chariot being fairly good fights. They're just very simple shonen of "I punched good but also did a simple trick somewhere"

Although I will say, if you didn't like the ape so much that you're saying it's child porn, I wonder what your reaction's gonna be to something else, as it's uncomfortable in a similar but somehow very different way.

yeah, i remember playing the original forever ago for a little bit on a friend's ps3 and it felt so lovely to engage with that the difference in this updated version is almost staggering in how much it comes off like an actual fighter that was made by someone who knows what the gently caress they're doing
