Is it just me or does the cover art completely not convey the plot or tone of the book? I mean yes it's a good painting of a goon with his cat but I'm not getting a good vs evil war vibe like, at all.

Nevermind the cover art, that summary text is hellacious.

quote:

"Factions with fell intent move to undermine or destroy that which has stood for centuries, while armies muster promising slaughter....In this time of desperation, old enemies find common ground. Ancient truths emerge to shatter long held beliefs. Monsters from myth and legend emerge onto the world stage, while blood drowns the ceremonies of the faithful."

This is like every fantasy novel ever written. If this is supposed to entice me to check out the series, it's a truly fantastic failure. Does it feel better for people who know the books, maybe? Is that possible?

Every book summary longer than “a stranger comes to town” is honestly excessive.

The greatest summary I've ever seen was the series finale of Mad Men "Don Draper has a problem". Accurately describes that episode and also every other episode in the show.

I've powered through a lot of Drake and Flint lately, and I need a recommendation for some non chuddy military science fiction to read. I honestly cannot go back to Weber and Ringo after reading them.

I'll reiterate my rec for Passage at Arms plus Starfishers, and add The Dragon Never Sleeps. Dragon meanders a bit, especially compared to PaA which is laser focused and intense throughout, but it has some of what Cook is the best at: large scale warfare on a span of years. In this case, in space. There are huge space battles, tense skirmishes, alien conspiracies, multiple viewpoints, and a fascinating future history. It's also one of the best "Roman Legions in Space" books. Highly recommended.

There's a passage in one of the Dread Empire books where he takes us through two years worth of warfare in three pages, describing a dozen pitched battles and giving good updates on all the characters. If GRRM could do that, GoT would have had the ten year timejump he had planned on.

On the hard scifi side, the Revelation Space series and the Xeelee series.

Oh the pulp sci-fi side, Poor Man's Fight series, the Bobiverse series, and the To Honor You Call Us series.

On the political scifi side, Red Mars.

On the "this started well but now I'm not legally allowed near children" side, Niven's known space.

habeasdorkus posted:

I'd second Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson. I'd actually start with Chasm City by Alistair Reynolds before deciding to dive into the full Revelation Space series, I think it's his best work and it's self contained.

I'd also recommend the Red Rising trilogy by Pierce Brown.

And, of course, I'd recommend Anathem by Neal Stephenson.

ToxicFrog posted:

Off the top of my head, stuff I'd rec in this vein:
- Ninefox Gambit (trilogy), Yoon Ha Lee
- The Wrong Stars (trilogy), Tim Pratt
- Chanur (five book series), C.J. Cherryh
- Merchanter (a bunch of standalones in the Alliance-Union setting), C.J. Cherryh

If you don't mind some magic coexisting with your SF:
- A Big Ship at the End of the Universe (trilogy), Alex White
- Starship's Mage (five-book series), Glynn Stewart

Less confident in these but they're really good and I think there's a better-than-even chance you'd like them:
- Ancillary Justice (trilogy), Ann Leckie
- The Murderbot Diaries (five novellas and a novel), Martha Wells

Thanks everyone! I have a 30 min commute and cook/clean with a 1 year old at home so I've been burning through audiobooks and I think I have enough recommendations here to last until my kid's 2nd or 3rd birthday now.

There's no sex and very little romance unless you count the unresolved tension between the leads.
