is there a burn spell in standard right now good enough to deal with sheoldred? because while meathook was a problem for aggro decks, sheoldred is a big fat brick wall for monored aggro.

Idk about a single card but the 2 most common ways I've been able to deal with it are Lightning Strike/Kami's Flare + Play with Fire or surprisingly, a lot of people even in diamond use the sheoldred to block a creature then it gets burned.

And then they play another Sheoldred :shepicide:

Yeah, Rending Flame is gonna be going into my monored builds for exactly that reason.

There's a bunch of 5-mana ones too, but lol, 5 mana removal in monored.

I still feel like monored is missing a second good quality hasty 2 drop, though.

right, thanks! for some reason I thought that was in historic, not standard. I'll slot a few of those in since my goblin list was doing so well it started matching me with nothing but mono-black decks.

Fires is also, generally, not the card you want to play against Sheoldred and a UR deck probably has better answers in the form of essence scatter or disdainful stroke. Mostly disdainful stroke because it also hits invoke despair. How you deal with Liliana I got no idea.

Hey I want some critiques on my drafting. I feel it's a weak aspect that I want to improve on.

https://www.17lands.com/draft/a9757f2dab1d439bbef45ce9637f1d9c

Here's my thought process.

Pack 1: Starting rare was no value but the PoB seem the most useful. Decided in the Mario just in case it shifted to Domain. Seed it just nice ramping and also helps Domain. Outrider works with or without domain fine. Picked up a dual land here. LS was the best choice. Picked a gruul land and continued on with what I felt was the most value.

Pack 2: BIG CHUNKY DEFLIER! Picked up the Rootwalla as my 2-drops were low. I did NOT like having to choose between Tatyova for the Greenwidow, but I felt the Greenwidow has just a bit more staying power with its domain ability. Another defiler but it's mostly a 4/4 first strike. Chose Tear Asunder and Repossession as splashing black can help greatly. Got a couple more dual lands.

Pack 3: Loamspeaker a solid two drop and weaponizes lands if needed! Squee fits into Gruul colors nicely. Another maro. Removal. Was making sure I got enough dual lands to empower Domain cards. A third outrider and Maro are just gravy.

Overall pool: https://sealeddeck.tech/Hrfam99bqK

Obviously it's Gruul with Domain as the gimmick. Will use the PoB but most likely not the Arrests. Maybe use one Swamp along with the B/G lands to kick Tear Asunder and use the Repossession.

Did I do alight?

Edit: I might try with this.

Another edit: Went 7-2! First lost was mana screw, the other was because the opponent went super wide with weenies. First 7 win in DMU finally!

I’m happy to see Meathook go, a ton of games came down to just that single card.

I played a bunch of Gruul aggro and then Mono white aggro and Meathook often determined those games, which makes sense, because they’re aggro. But the real heartbreakers you would lose by 1-2 pts just because of the healing. Then Sheoldred comes down and GG.

But what was even shittier was when I would try and play an Orzhov deck that was running Meathook itself! I would get into mirror matches or games against mono black where the rule was that the player who did not have an active Meathook would lose. If the game was relatively close and dragged into midrange or late game, it would absolutely just close it out with the passive life total movement.

given the volume of games you seem to play i really don't think a five loss streak should tilt you this much. even if you have a 60% wr, the chance of any given five games being losses in a row is over 1%

the point of playing mono-r on ladder is generally not to win the majority of your games but to play enough in volume to get your wins and climb the ladder quickly in real-time

p1p2: 17lands disagrees with me but i'd take Tribute here. There's lots of big dumb things in the format even if maro is the biggest of dumbest of them all
p1p4: I think it's a little too early to card commit to domain, destroy evil is a lot more flexible and has a better winrate.

p2p1-p2p5: lol did you post this draftlog just to troll?
p2p6: double white is probably going to be too hard to swing
p2p10: I like marsh because it makes both of our splash colors and we are pretty light on fixing. we just don't have anything to do with blue besides +1 domain
p3p4: I'm on the land here. We got removal already but you can never have enough fixing.
p3p5: treaty is just too good to pass up (third highest winrate uncommon. Especially with two maros where treaty grows them and lets us cast one on turn 4.
p3p7: land again, we're scarce on blue

draft looks pretty good, only glaring error is passing up that treaty. look how badly your final build wants some ramp spells

I took the Tergrid Historic Brawl deck posted by OneHandClapping, and made Gutmorne the commander instead. It's hilarious - half the cards in each player's hand will be something that belongs to the other player. Sometimes a single crappy card will ping-pong between the players for several turns as I keep playing "each player discards a card" effects.

3 x Urborg Repossession
2 x Infernal Grasp
4 x Undead Butler
2 x Urborg Llurgoyf
2 x Liliana of the Veil
4 x Old Rutstein
3 x the Cruelty of Gix
2 x Wrenn and Seven
3 x Spirit-Sisters' Call
2 x Toxrill, the Corrosive
3 x Titan of Industry
3 x Old Stickfingers

1 x Plains
8 x Swamp
2 x Takenuma, Abandoned Mire
4 x Forest
1 x Shattered Sanctum
3 x Deathcap Glade
4 x Overgrown Farmland

urborg repossess is great, in this deck it's basically a soft tutor and makes sure you get your land and it's just :iia:

There’s an alchemy werewolves deck that seems pretty good, it hosed some of the mostly standard decks I tried against it.

I think I’m gonna stay out of the queue until Meathook is banned. I could craft a control deck and ignore it if I had 30 more wildcards, but when 2/3 of all matchups are mono black and every single game hinges on “does the opponent draw Meathook” I’m just bored with it.

Last game the opponent meathooked, dropped sheoldred, dropped trespasser, dropped bankbuster all by turn 5, and that’s GG. They didn’t even attack. They didn’t need to, they could just tax me out. I could swap to my own Meathook deck and then we could get into some horribly tedious grind fests where whoever draws more bankbusters and sheoldreds wins.

It was a fun meta for a while, got to mythic and got to see all the selesnya/azorius/domain/3 color piles but mono black is just so tedious to see anymore. I would rather play mono blue, which is also a wretched matchup where they either are on the play and have six counter spells or they’re on the draw and you win.

That's a deck alright. R/W go wide is such a strong deck with a decent draw.

I just ended up with a similar pile (but with a P2P1 Chaplain and a hard pivot in that pack to get the defender package going) that lost twice in a row to screw and then just walked 7 wins on the bounce in best of one. Got to play Shivan Devastator exactly once in all those games, and never played Radha's Firebrand in any of them. Just a pile of dudes and a couple of overrun effects.

Trophy Deck
3 Goblin Picker
1 Radha's Firebrand
1 Argivian Cavalier
1 Automatic Librarian
1 Coalition Warbrute
2 Dragon Whelp
2 Keldon Strike Team
1 Shivan Devastator

1 Heroic Charge
1 Warhost's Frenzy
1 Captain's Call

1 Destroy Evil
1 Hurloon Battle Hymn

1 Walking Bulwark
3 Shield-Wall Sentinel
2 Wingmantle Chaplain

8 Plains
8 Mountain
1 Sacred Peaks

It really isn’t. It has Huntmaster, which is absolutely broken at night. Oh, I get 3 permanents on ETB, 2 more on every attack, and a card less fight interaction??? It is rare that I play a Huntmaster and lose in this meta even if I was behind significantly.

Also, pro-tip against black, save the Komano for the turn they play Lilliana. You almost certainly will not aggro black to death but if you can make Lilliana a 1 for 1 trade for your 2 drop they have a very hard time recovering.

I brewed this for Standard two hours ago and love it if anyone's looking for a fun beatdown deck. It's surprisingly more consistent than I was expecting - Gaea's Might / Twinferno can close out games really fast.

Murmur Twin posted:

This is where the original deck ended up, and I just hit mythic with it with a roughly 60% winrate against the field. Straight-up beatdown wasn't working against the hell sea of mono-Black so I tweaked it to make it a lot more resilient against removal. Basically the goal is to win with bigger creatures (5/3 Nishoba Brawler hits extremely fast, and Goyf/Stickfinger can get out of control really fast) before other decks can deal with them, while filling the graveyard to enable stuff like Greenwidow, Underdog, and Extraction Specialist.

I didn't like the original build of this deck because it felt unfocused, so I made the second version of the deck to work less on the domain stuff and more on the graveyard stuff. The second deck was good enough to win, but definitely not top tier.

Time passed, I drafted a bunch of DMU, and I realized: domain is really good. So I decided to rebuild the first deck and focus more on the domain part and ended up with this:

quote:

Naya Domain (Standard Bo1)
-

4 Radha's Firebrand
4 Nishoba Brawler
4 Fable of the Mirror Breaker
4 Llanowar Greenwidow
4 The Weatherseed Treaty

4 Gaea's Might
3 Twinferno
2 Angelfire Ignition

4 Leyline Binding

5 Forest
5 Mountain
1 Plains
1 Island
1 Swamp
14 Triomes (mix and match, spread them out to maximize odds of hitting domain)

This deck is actually bonkers. I am currently on a 19-0 run with it. Most of my games seem to revolve around the opponent tapping out for something and then eating 15-20 damage from one attack.

I decided to hit record on a play session during this run, so if anyone's looking for something to run, here's a thing to watch:
