If he's saying it all the time, I think it's because it keeps being a relevant point.

I avoid anything he's in these days. I've seen him on other series I enjoy and he seems to be playing some kind of smug character. I've never seen him review a set, but

This might be it, then. In his set and product reviews, he tends to be very even handed and straightforward about what he likes and doesn't like about something.

For example, I think

quote:

It's really cool to see so many fun and unique designs for the new cards alongside so many Stellar reprints. I mean the grixis deck comes with dark ritual and brainstorm! From top to bottom from flavor to power to reprint quality to financial value to game play Wizards of the Coast and I suppose Games Workshop has knocked this collaboration out of the park.

Honestly this puts me in a really weird position. Despite the extreme markups on this product they are still essentially worth it financially, but I still don't agree with markups. I wish that Wizards of the Coast stated and took efforts to maintain an MSRP on new releases and when we look at so many many previous pre-cons that also had markups out of the gate and see them now going for so much less than their MSRP.

I want to say like I always say don't buy these, just buy the old pre-cons and wait until these inevitably drop, but are these going to inevitably drop? They can't reprint these Warhammer cards without making Magic the Gathering versions, and while they have pledged to do that for secret lair: universes beyond cards, they have clearly said that products like Warhammer and the upcoming Lord of the Rings are not planned to have magic skins, so will these cards ever even be reprinted? I'm willing to bet a few of them will eventually years down the line, but in that meantime the prices are going to go up. These pre-cons are probably going to be coveted I can't even get the limited edition foil ones.

I don't even know what to say to you looking to me for that advice except don't do anything that you cannot financially handle and be comfortable with. Do not just buy them because it's going to be an investment. Buy them because you love them, because you want to play with them, because you want these cards and maybe just maybe if it is only a few singles that you want price out those singles and see if it might still be a better deal to pick up the individual cards rather than the product.

But yeah, this product is a home run and I don't even like Warhammer.

Final conclusion: despite the extreme and growing scarcity and, of course, the immersion breaking impact these cards and decks are having on Magic the Gathering as Commander decks, just looking at them in that regard in isolation, this is an absolute triumph. The product is extremely high quality, maybe higher quality than we've ever seen out of a commander pre-con, and therefore despite my reservations I'm going to give Warhammer 40K decks an solid shining "A".

These decks are phenomenal and I'm willing to bet that you will have a phenomenal time playing with them assuming you can get your hands on them.

is about as nuanced and fair a review as one can make.

Also probably obvious to everyone but there's a big difference between profit and revenue and there was a long period where international shipping and materials went up 500–1000%, profit falling does not necessarily mean that revenue or sales fell at all

Sworn to dedicate my heart and soul to the restoration of human kind!

I care about every new release because I own and maintain a cube, and most of these sets have at least one juiced up nonsense card that I'm interested in picking up. It can be pretty obnoxious when you feel like you're on top of things only to find out that there was this other random product released a couple weeks ago which you completely missed, full of wordy multiplayer chaff that may or may not have a card for you which is busted in 1v1. So then I feel obliged to read everything, when in the past I was really excited for the spoiler seasons of sets prior to 2018/19.

I totally buy into most of the complaints that content creators have re: content overload. Most of the complaining boils down to "I've only just got this new set/product, and now we're immediately in spoiler season again - let me enjoy this new stuff for a few weeks at least". WotC's lust for perpetual hype makes each product feel like churn and cardboard fast-food (for lack of a better term). It's basically the Funko Pop-ification of Magic at this point.

yeah, his mtg 30th video is overwhelmingly positive up to the point where he mentions the price and how it excludes 99% of the player base, that it's a perfect home run product for the community and they completely botched the delivery. He's completely right, and gives it a fair shake from both angles, that it's a great product that hasbro had totally hosed up the release and concept of.

Yeah I don't get the hate/sideways glances at his content either. The guy comes across as an uptight stuffy guy as a character he plays in skits but like on his Shuffle Up and Play stuff he's just as neurotic and nervous and excited to play the game as the rest of us. He signal boosts smaller channels, appears in channels for card games he doesn't even play just to learn what it's about and like everyone has a good time. The episode before last with Tappy and Princess where he gives this long diatribe about what this deck meant to him and the nostalgia he holds for it, only to give into peer pressure to mulligan and just ABSOLUTELY sulk about his new hand, was probably the most relatable thing I've ever seen.

I do wish there were new deck boxes and sleeves to review though, I do enjoy the product reviews.

Maybe once just as a gimmick it would be interesting to see what that was like. But yeah, even if these things were priced appropriately at less than a normal booster pack, I can't see them being for much other than nostalgia. Most of the cards are bad, and the few that are good are not legal in the majority of formats and these specific versions aren't even legal* any format. I would have bought a pack or two just for fun, but beyond that they're pretty pointless.

I also don't see what's wrong with the Professor, he seems to be on the level and on the side of the people who like the play the game rather than the corporation and the people who view it as their retirement fund. His Shuffle Up and Play videos are fun, I especially liked the budget Commander and Pauper episodes, and the latter one introduced me to Rhystic Studies and Spice8Rack who both make interesting videos.

*In the second context of "legal" I say gently caress WotC, if the card is format-legal then proxy away

They've done it before, twice! It's massively boring because almost all the cards suck rear end!

There's no common creatures outside of green bigger than a 2/3 except Sea Serpent and Hill Giant. Most colours have 4 or fewer creatures at common. White has circles of protection for each colour at common so good luck getting through that if you're not playing Disenchant or Tranquility. Each pack has like 3-5 basics in it. Disintegrate and Fireball are both common though!

Secret lairs are maximum effeciency. The loving things are even printed yet and they will print to order how much people buy and little more. When its done, its done, and they will move on to the next one. The consumer is takes on the wait times, the upfront money, and the risk of not getting the product and Wizards takes no risk.

I've only recently started watching the Professor, and I like him. I can see why people think he's negative though, there's a certain snark/cynicism that bleeds through in all his content, even the fun gameplay videos. And in those he'll trade jabs with his friends. It's just smack-talk, but it doesn't come off as positive.

I actually like the non-stop preview season WotC has going on. I just love seeing new cards, okay? What I don't like is the money-grabbing stuff, even if it doesn't affect me directly, like replacing the free Arena draft for attending an in-person prerelease with just a couple of worthless packs, increasing the price of packs, offering something insulting for that cosplay contest, not paying attention to unhealthy formats, and of course the $999 Beta proxies, among other things. It's not the constant stream of new stuff that bothers me, it's all the other lovely business practices.
