Sexless-ness in most modern superhero / blockbuster is indeed a problem imo

Remember the sexual tension and chemistry between Logan and Jean in the first two X-MEN movies or between Rick and Evelyn in The Mummy(1999)? That was good stuff.

Now I'm not some weirdo horndog that thinks this should be in everything, but drat a little juice would be nice here and there. Seriously you'd think all these modern tentpoles were made for loving Quakers.

I just watched a clip of Wolverine in X-Men 1 because of this post, and it's really weird looking back at how muted and more natural the dialogue is.

Meanwhile:

If I am remembering correctly, the start of the first movie has a scene where Paltrow’s character has to clean up Stark’s bedroom after he sleeps with a reporter or something. I think the reporter is still there in the morning and Paltrow’s character kicks her out, but I may be misremembering.

yeah its a legit gross scene and its not at all surprising they walked this aspect of the character back in subsequent movies the bigger problem is they didnt replace it with anything i dont think stark and pepper ever actually get a romantic subplot the movies just start acting like theyre in a romantic relationship at some point despite having done fuckall to show it onscreen

it doesnt help that robert downey jr and gwyneth paltrow have almost no romantic chemistry ive mentioned this before but whoever casts these movies is making no effort to check for this stuff probably because these characters are introduced with no expectation of their necessarily being romantically paired with anyone but then the sequels change their minds and decide that these movies need romance

my mistake; it's not that the Tolkien Estate refuses to sell Silmarillion at any price it's just that they were only trying to sell rights to some of the other writings a couple of years ago and Amazon took the bait

Like all of these things, it could work if they actually committed to anything. Tony turning into someone who would have chemistry with Pepper, building a relationships, whatever, that’s the sort of thing in theory having 15 films or whatever allows you to do. You could go over the whole arc of he’s a borderline MeToo prick womanizer and rear end in a top hat boss, he’s traumatized, the suit’s killing him, he suffers and changes. That’s why you have all those films right? To show the weight of each subsequent event on the character and plot a transformation in a gradual way.

So, you could have - and I don’t know what sort of personality would have good chemistry with GOOP or her character - but you could have RDJ getting there as Tony Stark has his entire world changed by fighting in this war, being irradiated by his suit.

What you can’t have is he doesn’t change and they’re in a relationship anyways.

Iron Man 3 was probably the best character work other than Winter Soldier, it was based on the consequences of Tony being a prick and womanizer, Shane Black making as close to a Shane Black film as they’d let him, but it also relied the most on Paltrow and their relationship and it’s too bad.

I don’t know, are Better Marvels possible? In theory the unlimited budget, acclaimed actors lining up to be in them, and having like 30 films to develop plots and characters could allow for really interesting stuff, but.. well,
