Tiny Timbs posted:I have no idea what the “mom” crack is supposed to mean You two are right. I should have put a hotlink to ANSIBLE and added <sarcasm> tags around my joke about ANSIBLE instead of expecting people to get the joke or go "what the hell is ansible?" or alternately calling me a dick for making fun of ANSIBLE (winner of 6 Hugo Awards) versus the immediate J'accuse! responses I got. Anyway for people unfamiliar with ANSIBLE; Ansible is a United Kingdoms fantasy & science-fiction physical newsletter turned internet newsletter that has been running since August 1979. Ansible the newsletter focused hard on UK based authors and UK based conventions/literary gatherings. Ansible has been edited by David Langford since issue 01. Pretty much the first decade of Ansible had heavy amounts of content (book reviews(mostly of UK authors), UK SF&F and literary event writeups with kilotons of long running in-jokes) that was submitted by UK based SF&F mega-fans & UK fantasy/science-fiction authors who weren't well known back then, but over time became EstablishedNames in the fantasy & science-fiction genres. For example, the editor of ANSIBLE, David Langford, has won more Hugo Awards than anyone else, ever. https://news.ansible.uk/ is the ANSIBLE homepage https://news.ansible.uk/aseries1.html#1979 is where the saga of ANSIBLE starts actual fantasy & scifi thread content: The Goblin Corps by Ari Marmell ended up being one of the best "Reverse Dungeon" inspired fantasy books that I've read. "Reverse Dungeon" is a TSR adventure module released back in 2000 where the players play as the monsters fighting against invading heroes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reverse_Dungeon Reading novelizations of fantasy and horror andscifi movies is something I recently started getting into. The George Lucas novels of the Star Wars original trilogy movies is different than the movies, and it's cool to see the differences. (Like Luke going into a fugue state and not remembering what the hell he did in the Death Star 1.0 trench run vs the movie). I know that novelizations of some of John Carpenters films exist; looking forward to eventually reading the novelization of Halloween 3: season of the witch. Conal Cochran was such a classy villain in H3, he even clapped at the Day Drinking Deadbeat Doctor Dad foiling his plan. quantumfoam fucked around with this message at 07:04 on Nov 26, 2022 |

I have no idea what Ansible is and have found every followup explanation increasingly incomprehensible. These posts are like reading a book review through Google translate. I think Tchaikovsky's writing is pretty decent overall but his books have been hit or miss for me. I recently read The Expert System's Brother and it was a good core idea, but the actual plot was pretty shallow.

there's a certain kind of author who simply loves to write monologues like that into everything. Joel Shepherd who I otherwise really like does it in 2 of his 3 series that I've read lol. always a moment where the characters turn to the camera and explain what horseshoe theory is basically.

I'm hate reading John Scalzi again, this time Kaiju Preservation Society. I really liked the Old Man's War books but for some reason I have spent the last few years rapidly growing to dislike his books and now I despise them for some reason. Well the idea is cool but god drat I hate this guy's writing and I want to run him over with a steamroller. In other news I read "Century Rain" by Alistair Reynolds earlier this week and that was great although I lmao'd when I found out the future society was founded by website "Slashdot". also adults in child bodies as The Future

i think the most recent thing scalzi wrote that I can say I honestly liked is his foreword to one of the more recent editions of forever war, and even that's probably 20 years old now. also you can tell he's seething that lots of people probably confuse his books for the forever war
