The art is still better than most manga I've ever seen, it's never going to be as good as when Miura was illustrating, he was an irreplaceable talent.
Due to that, even if the rest of the manga looked like dog poo poo, and it doesn't, I'd be okay with it.

The Berserk countdown ended, revealing…. A blu ray box for the memorial edition. No new series or movies haha.

Berserk marketing teams are excellent trolls.

Read the latest chapter. Yeah... Miura just had a better command of both character facial expressions and body language to really tell this story. Whats here is fine, but its hard to feel these are characters with the same depth.

Read the chapter. Miura is still not alive and this is not drawn by Miura for sure, but is Very Good and there’s no major shift in tone or character just a slight dip in quality. I love it and from a purely selfish perspective, a regular release schedule of Berserk is the best thing.

Knowing how the anime industry works, probably the sales of the memorial edition blu ray will dictate if we ever get another studio 4c Berserk series. But i'm not holding my breath.

At least it improved some stuff from the movies.

There's always been speculation about uh, Miura's real life experience with sexual abuse-- given what a prominent, recurrent theme it is in Berserk and how he seems to really have an eye for PTSD symptoms, especially early on.

gently caress the manga opens with traditional lusty sex turning into monstrosity and Guts asserting dominance over it, let alone the horrors of Donovan, Wyald, Griffith selling himself, Casca, the horse, "Adult Play" or w/e with Rosie's kids, the trolls, etc. It's just that speculation on Miura has been on the down out of general respect and because well, Berserk seemed like a relatively healthy way to explore those issues and sexually destructive behaviors were depicted as truly horrific, bad, and exploring the consequences of them (for main characters at least) was a subtext in the story.

And well, even if Miura was never once touched in a way he didn't consent to, all of this newer information would still square with his published material in terms of sexual maladjustment.

It stands to reason that even without any abuse of any kind, being insulated as poo poo in the manga world would gently caress your brain up in terms of sexual normalcy. As I have to explain to a lot of teen boys : "You go from being a shy boy with an anime habit to the grown-rear end man who likes a suspiciously large amount of stuff with little girls in it WAY faster than you think." It's loving pathetic and a serious loving shame, and it does legitimately hurt to know that Miura by increasing evidence probably was wanking it to some pretty heinous poo poo, if nothing else, and expected us to be grateful that it wasn't more.

During our last discussion of the depiction of sex and sexuality in Berserk I deliberately stopped short of calling him a pedophile because I thought it would be incendiary and lead to a lovely conversation. But maybe I shoulda just gone for it huh.

Not surprising, unfortunately, especially with the non-Berserk stuff that was published. At this point, we can only be happy that THIS particular brand of hosed-up depictions did not make its way that much into Berserk (...not 100%, unfortunately), and we can only hope the current team steers the hell away from anything like that in the future. Not that Berserk doesn't have enough other stuff in it that, at the very least, merits a warning label.

I will keep Berserk in the section of "Recommend with a big BE WARNED only"

Look, after I read Gigantomachia back in the day I got real squicked out and basically stopped reading Berserk. It was easy to be honest it was coming out super slowly. Then a little before Miura's death I went and read a bunch of the comic all at once and it was frustrating because I was pretty sure I was right about the guy but the comic was *so good*. Art is complicated and our relationship with art and artists is complicated and I think the thing he made is kind of a masterpiece and also I think he is a total piece of poo poo.

Can I...ask about his other work, that people get squicked about? I've never heard specifics and at this point I'm too afraid to look it up on my own. If this breaks any sort of Berserk Thread rules, I apologize, I've just heard a lot of people dancing around the subject over the years

Honestly, given what we know about the Rorouni Kenshin guy and how quickly Jump was willing to welcome him back with open arms, I wouldn't be surprised if this poo poo was fairly common. God this sucks so hard

Gigantomachia is a short one volume manga about a dude doing mixed martial arts to giant bugs. He has a magical child (elementary age or younger) that is magically one million-jillion years old who can heal him with her magic pee. It sucks. When it came out mostly people didn't want to talk about that element of it and just talked about how fun and goofy it was. But it was kind of a massive part of it and was drawn real fetishy and explicit and I thought it was really weird that people most people just kind of shrugged it off.

Torquemadras

Oh, that's not even HALF of it. Miura also published another short story from Greek-ish mythology that basically destroyed the last thread with how, uh, problematic it was. I'm serious. Read the very first post of this thread.

I didn't read THAT one, but I did read Gigantomachia, and it just breaks my heart how hard you have to blend out various things to actually enjoy it as a story. It feels like a hosed-up scifi author who just can't help but interrupt the fascinating speculative fiction with long treaties on how child pornography is no big deal in the enlightened future.

But, what is there to say now? Miura has passed, whatever the guy personally thought cannot harm anyone anymore, Berserk already has enough well-known issues which these particular news don't really affect, and the studio he founded should have the chance to be better.

I will loving cry if Kouji Mori and the Studio Gaga people defend this, but, really, I want to believe that they'll be better. Also, I doubt this recent Twitter discovery will reach them anyway... Less chance for them to put their foot in their mouth -_-

That's uh...that's something. I think I was actually thinking of his other series that entirely derailed one of these threads to the point of closure, but it's nice to confirm that this is just a thing Miura liked to do. I might be misremembering but was this the law Shonen Jump came out strongly against? which if so, :siren: loving yikes :siren: see, again, their relationship with the guy who does Kenshin

Brought it up in a different thread, but this is absolutely a problem across the industry involving both Shonen/seinen AND shojo/josei--there is an uncomfortable amount of manga written for girls and women BY other women about older men in relationships with school girls. Fruits Basket, Cardcaptor Sakura (CLAMP is really bad about this), His and Her Circumstances...not to mention so many casual jokey jokes about older men being in love with pre-pubecent girls when they get older(Higurashi off the top of my head but this is everywhere). And this is all in poo poo that I like. It just comes up so much that i dont know what to make of it and im pretty sure i know what the author wants me to think of it amd that makes me super uncomfortable. This poo poo about Miura is sad and gross
