Also an entire barn full of dead burning babies because deep and woke moral ambiguity, can… can killing babies be.. good, actually??? If they are brain eating babies????

That's about the last nail in the coffin for being able to recommend Berserk to people, which is unfortunate, because despite its creator's severe character flaws it is definitely an amazing work of art. If we got some kind of apology statement or acknowledgment by Young Animal, Kouji Mori or even Miura's assistants it would go a long way, but that is extremely unlikely to ever happen

And that's absent mitigating factors like surrounding culture (like say, a manga industry that makes its bread and butter on "loli" and "moe" and whatever the gently caress poo poo), social support structures, and whether or not the person was already disordered (which is sadly common, as many sexual abuse victims are targeted precisely because of their perceived weakness and lack of social support). Now nothing was ever confirmed with Miura, and such things are the realm of speculation and the man is dead so I'm not going to indulge any speculation beyond saying the following-- If Miura were a childhood victim, it would square a lot with his poo poo. The entire Golden Age arc and crux the manga's entire story revolves around is the ultimate betrayal of trust and personal safety/autonomy, complete with what Femto does to Casca as literally the demonic rape cherry atop the blood fountain sundae that is the Eclipse. Every antagonist aside from Zodd is an authority who has betrayed and perverted their charges in a way that mutilates and permanently damages them. Miura being a guy who experienced something in his early life that he spent most of the 80s and 90s processing via Berserk would make sense, and it would further make sense that the deeper he got into his lonely life of extremely odd, extremely long, extremely insular hours his sexual compass permanently warped and never recovered because by that point he was a venerated champ in his industry. But we'll never know. I still see recommends for that thing "Made in Abyss" which is heartbreaking because I tried to read it and literally in the first chapter the grossest pedo poo poo was on full loving display. I had read a wiki summary, seen some art, that Irish lad SuperEyepathWolf did a recommend, it seemed great and he had the warning of "yeah there's some controversy  around the manga I'm just talking about the anime but know that if you look it up" and I thought I would be alright, but like...  So much manga/anime is like going into a bakery with these truly excellent croissants, macaroons, and cakes but every third one has actual human feces on top or inside of it, and when you point out how you can't look past that you get mobbed by a bunch of Otaku screaming "Death of the Author!" and "Um actually!" with poo poo-covered mouths until you leave and idly wonder if gassing the building could be written off on your taxes as pest control. mind the walrus fucked around with this message at 13:07 on Dec 23, 2022 |

A bunch of your favorite creators or performers are creepy shits. I'm trying to enjoy the art that isn't explicitly child porn and will avoid the other works. Japan is loving weird about this, if you've read manga/watched anime long enough you should know this. Separate the creators from the content and you'll be able to enjoy the content more. If you can't, then don't read it anymore, thats fine too. I just want to find out what Guts and Co are up to in the next chapter, if Berserk suddenly no longer is showing a ton of rape and child abuse thats an acceptable trade off to come with losing Miura's artistic talent but keeping the property. It's got to be okay to enjoy/appreciate the output while still condemning whatever personal demons creators have and making your own judgment about how that impacts your engagement with their properties. Kenshin's author sucks, the manga he made was/is cool and good. Kevin Spacey is a creep, he still put out a ton of great performances. Being able to recognize their professional work isn't a free pass for their personal lives, but imo they can be separate. You can enjoy Berserk and still think Miura held lovely bad views on illustrated child pornography. I can watch The Usual Suspects and be impressed by the performance and when its done go "sucks he's an awful person". Some things truly do ruin the entire work (looking at you Lost Prophets dude), im not sure Miura's views have for many of us, if they have for you fair. e: in case this wasn't clear enough, Miura's views I do not agree with, but they're also not on the same level to me as the Kenshin author actually peddling real child porn content. This post is more about those of us that want to enjoy and discuss Berserk without being weighed down by his personal life. I think that's okay. I don't think anyone was saying youre not allowed to enjoy art made by bad people. The arguments I saw were over defending Miura and minimizing the harm of drawing sexualized children. But those were pretty loving psycho posts I was responding to so maybe I missed something during the kerfuffle, in which case ignore this post. I wouldn't judge anyone for still being able to enjoy Berserk. I really wish I could still enjoy it, and I hope to be able to enjoy it again after I process some more. I'm fortunate that Berserk is one of many equally cool things in my life, so losing Berserk isn't too big of a sting. I can definitely imagine it's harder for people who have loved Berserk for decades or specifically really love manga, etc. It sucks when you find out something very important to you was made by bad people. Either way, I wouldn't want to force anyone to engage with it, but I still think those posts have value and that this is the correct thread for that discussion; I'm always open to arguments that aren't rooted in pedo apologia. I got the last 4 volumes released in physical copies recently and read them. Definitely better to experience in one go rather than chapter by chapter. Wondering how much the drop off in quality will be felt once volume 42 comes out, whether it’ll still feel like berserk or the faces are drawn too differently to feel like the same characters, which is what always happens when I try to read American comics where the artists constantly switch around
