I get half!!
I started playing Jedi Fallen Order. It's pretty good! The animations are very wonky though. Like the jump animation is the same if you are standing still or at a full run and it's very strange. Also when you sprint the main character does this weird posture where he hunches his torso down. I wonder if this was strange motion capture or just strange animation choices?

It was their first game that wasn't an FPS. I'm just guessing, but it's possible FO being their first attempt at a third person action adventure lead to some of the clunky looking aspects of it.

It wasn't great but I thought it was almost good, just didn't stick the landing. I'm willing to be cautiously optimistic about the sequel. Mostly because of titanfall related good graces. I did not like their take on Star Wars much though.

This did remind me to go in and change it back to the bottom tier for when it renews though, because they’ve done absolutely nothing to make that top tier subscription worth it in the ~6 months it’s existed so far

If I’m not playing anything online by the time that comes round in June I might just drop it entirely tbh

It's insane how bad the library for the highest tier has been. Feels like a complete afterthought. At least the middle tier is okay but jeez.

Honestly I don't mind ps+ premium. But it's only an extra $20 a year and I still use the ps3 streaming occasionally.

The handful of ps1/psp games they add helps too. I mean I played ape escape and that game still holds up decently well.

What's the consensus around the whole vertical PS5 debacle? Was that just a lie from some no-name site or what's going on? I've only heard it from wololo and then everyone else parroting.

I've had the lowest tier for years now and it's kind of worthless, even on that. The only game I got from it was that Nickelodeon Smash clone and even that's not really worth it.

It's clickbait. Consensus was "it could be bad if something bad happened," but there's no reason to worry for the overwhelming majority of users who aren't regularly damaging their PS5s.

Toilet Rascal
It could be bad under the following circumstances:

-Your PS5 has a severe manufacturing defect

-Your PS5 was knocked over or had some other kind of physical trauma

-You tried to mod your PS5 and hosed it up

If none of these apply to you, it's not a problem

OK, the first one is not something you have any control over, but if it were a widespread issue we would have heard a lot more about it from a lot more places by now

It definitely doesn’t help that I have a steam deck now so I can play pretty much all of the PS1/PS2 games I might want to on a handheld thanks to the magic of emulation and I don’t have to rely on Sony making them available.

It's not even just misleading clickbait, it's more of a straight up fabrication. "You are killing your PS5 by keeping it vertical" is objectively false (by the reported information at least) - if the seal keeping the liquid metal in springs a leak, your PS5 will, at that point, be susceptible to failure because of it, and I imagine the failure will happen pretty quick. There's no reported cumulative risk that can be mitigated by keeping your PS5 horizontal. It's like saying "you're killing your wine by storing it in a wine rack" because a few bottles sprung a leak and dumped on the floor.

So now I'm also playing Dragon Quest Builders 2 and it is also great. I loved the first one. Anyway, same problem. Can't use Spotify. Is this just a "me" issue or are they seriously preventing me from changing the music in my own goddamn game, again?

Clickbaity basically. Cyrano checked it all out, basically it could fail if the seal goes but thats only likely to happen if its knocked over alot, so if that aint happening...

Cyrano4747 posted:

Hrm. Reading around while waiting for this gently caress-awful do-nothing meeting to finish up, I'm not that worried.

They have a seal around it and everything is saying the issue might arise if the seal is broken "somehow." The website that's boosting it now (that repair video that got linked is 3 months old) is a modding / jailbreaking community. Looks like it's mostly a concern if you're rooting around under the hood or if the machine suffers a significant and sharp blow (like being dropped from a decent height). Reading around it looks like it's fairly popular in high performance / gaming laptops so you'll see a bunch of repair videos of that kind of failure, since laptops tend to get banged around more than your average desktop or console. Also reading around I'm finding a bunch of overclocker forums and the like talking about how it's fine to put liquid metal on your desktop with the mobo in a vertical orientation as long as you a) apply the proper amount (e.g. don't put in so much it squirts out the sides) and b) mount all your poo poo correctly (proper tension on the die, no gaps or leaks etc).

To add to that, it also looks like Sony both put the LM in a recess and put a big closed-cell foam seal around it that has significant pressure put on it from the cooler, creating the seal:

I'm seeing a fair few videos of people modding laptops with LM that use more or less the same solution, but making their own closed-cell seals.

The pics of damage that the article had pretty clearly show that seal failing, but in a way that implies it went above/under the seal rather than through it (so it wasn't sealed to the heat sink properly, if my thinking is correct)

My take away is that this sort of thing is probably going to happen if the seal gets damaged (dropped console, shipping damage due to UPS hucking boxes around, etc) or if the seal was defective from the factory (heatsink not seated properly). On the whole I'm not too concerned. It doesn't look like the sort of thing that can just happen due to gravity, and the "you're killing your console storing it vertically" title looks to be click bait. If I had kids or pets I might proactively store my console horizontally just to prevent anything knocking it over in the first place, and I'll admit that I'm going to be a little extra careful transporting it now on the rare occasion I take it someplace, but I'm not too worried about it sitting under my desk.

edit: this is all just "bored in a meeting" tier research consisting of reading OC'er forums and the like, so if anyone knows better correct me.

It's something games can disable if they want, and some publishers are particularly bad about it. I've noticed it more in Japanese-published games compared to western-published games, but there's not too much of a trend on who will allow or disallow it other than devs/publishers that are particularly touchy about their music rights (like with the Dragon Quest series). It sucks, I agree. It should be a feature that's available in every game.

That's loving absolutely insane. I thought it was bad enough trying to Spotify when playing Kiwami 1, but at least they let you do it. Sure, there don't seem to be any sound/music settings whatsoever, but at least you can do it.

It's like how MS (or was it Sony?) was like, "You'll never have to hit a trigger and a bumper button simultaneously in a game. We won't allow it on our new console" and then absolutely never enforced that, leaving us with lobster claw in some game. Bad companies.

My only reservation about recommending emulation over piss pass is the hassle (and maybe legal risk in Europe?) of tracking down ROMs, but otherwise it's gotten so easy that it's almost a no brainer if you have a PC with a half decent CPU. I've spent the past few months getting emulation in place for a range of consoles from SNES to Wii, and it's been weirdly empowering to know I have it all set up to my liking with every game I could want without needing to maintain old hardware or a corporation's ongoing permission. Similar pleasure as running a Plex server but way way easier.

Farewell, good Hunter. May you find your worth in the waking world.

Finally got the video of my fight with Old King Allant at the end of Demon Souls uploaded. Kind of forgot I had saved it.

What a fight. I was trying so hard to play it safe because, I said before, a year ago when I played Demon Souls I quit out because of this boss. Must’ve tried upwards of 20-30 times and just could not kill him. I think Elden Ring and beating Sekiro (definitely) has drastically improved my fighting abilities in these games. So I reloaded my old Demon Souls save and beat the game on my 3rd try. It felt like a book closing. Really amazing job Bluepoint did with the game’s ending.

Spoiler that after the fight the rest of the ending cutscene is recorded so don’t watch past the fight if you don’t want to spoil that ending of Demon Souls!!

My Elden Ring fights are all extremely boring, since all I do is summon Latenna and then throw Black Fire until the boss is dead.

Best game I've ever played, I'm extremely impatient to finish it so I can start over with a different character.

It only happens about half the time and I've only noticed it affecting shiv and first aid kit materials. The issue might be that you're very rarely getting a "full" material, it's usually a half or a quarter of one, so it might not be enough to craft from immediately.
