Turbinosamente posted:Go on, I'm interested. Craig's films are ridiculously melodramatic and self serious while also having this annoying winking tone, where it can't help but rib you for watching it. The kind of movie that's a 2 hour long imperialist spy adventure that can't help make fun of the idea of a spy adventure in the modern world. Pathaan takes itself fully serious, even when it breaks into literal song and dance, it never tries to cloak what it is in ironic self loathing of the genre. It remembers how to have fun, so even though it's got Spy Kids level CGI and barely any location shooting it still remembers it's job is to be entertaining first and foremost.

I feel like I’m from another planet when it comes to the Craig run of films. I found the entire tenure to be a renaissance and much needed change in direction. He’s my favorite portrayal of the character on screen to date, and I’d easily elect to watch almost any of them over the older ones. It bums me out that people turned on those movies so hard after being initially high on Casino Royale. It’s kind of like if the prevailing opinion on Batman were to be “bring back the camp and nipple suits”.

Naw, I seen it many times and love every bit. Blofeld's desperate attempts to become a novel, the lethal tobbagon chase, the raid on piz Gloria, the most tense scene in bond history with bond barely escaping down the monorail line only to end up hunted like an animal, nearly dead before Tracee rescues him, love every second Miami Vice Great film let down by how utterly ugly it is. Sorry Mann, if you'd of shot on film this would be an all timer Gaius Marius fucked around with this message at 09:30 on Jan 26, 2023 |

It has it's moments. The opera scene is cool and the way Bond dispatches Mr. Green is cold as gently caress. And as much as people dunk on it, I like the fact that the villains were just stealing a third world nation's resources with a military coup, with tacit CIA support. I kind of wished the Craig movies had stuck with plots like that and people profiting off of terrorism like in Casino Royale instead of becoming about's Bond's tragic childhood and poo poo.

Quantum's editing made it feel like the movie was on fast forward whenever there was an action scene. And there were so many of them! Just no down time at all.

Hrm, gonna have to block out time for Paathan at some point, the musical numbers and bad CGI are staples of Indian movies so that's no deterrent. And more of them are popping up in the algorithm on Netflix which is a good thing. And to try and keep it brief for Craig Bond, I think Casino Royale got a pass back then by having come immediately after Die Another Day and being a soft reboot. Yes it was necessary to update and change the formula, but looking back they seem to have picked all the worse bits of modern action thrillers to copy. They may have been cheeky pointing it out in Goldeneye but it doesn't make it any less true that Bond is a relic of the cold war, and they've been struggling to write around that since then too. Also besides the last minute opening chase contractual edits, Quantum also got shafted by a writer's strike as well.

Put me in the "liking the one-time Bond composers" crew. George Martin/LALD: he produced the Beatles, for gently caress's sake. Marvin Hamlisch/TSWLM: absolute maximum Seventies. Bill Conti/FYEO: the Seventies never died! They just got new synthesisers. Eric Serra/Goldeneye: opening with the James Bond Theme on kettle drums and vuvuzela? Hell yes. Only Michael Kamen lets the side down, because he just recycled his Lethal Weapon/Die Hard bag of cues, but hey. If composers weren't allowed to reuse their own stuff James Horner's last score would have been Battle Beyond The Stars.

Thank god Goldeneye's soundtrack is good overall because I hate hate hate the credits song with a fiery passion. I also recall Living Daylights having a decent soundtrack but probably doesn't fit the one time composer bill. And now it's clearer to me as to how McCartney wound up doing Live and let Die.

It's enjoyable, but c'mon the best? From the Life of the Marionettes This 1980 Bergman film follows the Peter and Katarin couple from the first episode of Scenes from a Marriage, although now they're German because Sweden's taxes are just Too drat High. This is a kind of murder mystery, where the mystery isn't whodunnit but whydunnit, as Peter murders a prostitute in the opening scene and the rest of the movie is spent in alternating flashforward and flashback as we peel back the layers of his unhappy marriage, his relationship with his mother, and possible latent homosexuality to discover exactly why Peter did it. And to be honest, by the end of it, I didn't really care. This is a beautifully shot film, among the best cinematography I've seen yet from the Berg, but I didn't connect to this story at all and found it to be the weakest of the MCU (marriage cinematic universe). Maybe I would 'get it' on a rewatch but I'm struggling to understand what this was trying to convey. The man made so many movies about people trapped in toxic relationships self destructing in the worst ways, so perhaps I should accept this as simply as another variation on that theme, but made so late in his career it feels like there's something more going on here that I'm unable to see. 6/10 e: Maaaybe bump that up to a 7 because of stuff like the dream sequence. I love looking at the movie. Mantis42 fucked around with this message at 23:52 on Jan 27, 2023 |

Was feeling in a Mann mood so I watched Blackhat (2015) and it’s not as bad as reviews would have you think. It’s Mann so it’s stylish as hell and the music is great, shout out to Harry Gregson Williams bringing his espionage thriller chops. To my knowledge a lot of the technical details were fairly accurate outside of the obvious plot device NSA super program, loved the phishing and usb plant scenes. The third act was weak but i did appreciate that Mann made no bones about how Chris Hemsworth was out of his depth and makes a bad plan and executes it poorly and barely survives. Really wish I could find the FX cut where they move the nuclear plant attack to the second act, it makes much more sense there. Yes he really wears a black hat in one scene.
