What a horrible thread to have a post.
I don't know if anyone heard but DragonSlayer is coming out in March and it has all new commentary with Guillermo Del Toro and the director (Matthew Robbins) on there.

It's not a great movie but it's a very "me" movie...I just like everything it does. It it has the 80s dirty fantasy look down cold, a really brassy and sinister soundtrack, has some genuinely weird political stuff in it, practical effects mixed with go-motion that works pretty well, and a protagonist who is kind of a dipshit. Very proto-D&D feeling (even though D&D was 5 years old when it was made).

Honestly, this is a fun way to do a release. Want to sell something like EVIL DEAD for the hundredth time? Slap some retro cover art on it and include a “degraded version” as a bonus.

This is one reason I bought from Code Red DVD for a while: there’s something very engaging about seeing a movie other people unmistakably have before you, and to be reminded that film’s a physical medium that degrades over time. Just preordered that White Zombie disc and looking immensely forward to it.

Saw Dragonslayer for the first time a few months ago, glad I did because yea it's definitely something I want to add to my collection. That type of classic fantasy is kinda like Westerns, a mostly dead genre so nothing to do but appreciate the ones we do have.

Maybe the one and only time Peter MacNicol had a lead role?

Yeah I'd buy that set in a heartbeat if half of the discs weren't worthless to me (no region free player). Same with the fancy Romero Dawn of the Dead 4K set that came out last year or the year before.

And so many others.

I'm sure there's a bunch of us that don't import. I get that I can own a region free BD player, but it's also down to anyone I let borrow a film, won't.

I bought a bunch of dvds in amsterdam in 2002, had a region free modded OG xbox, and it came up often enough when people asked for things that I can't do that again for my own sanity

Nice!

I had a ton of fond memories of watching DragonSlayer when I was younger, it'll be nice to upgrade my DVD.

For some reason I link DragonSlayer with The Last Starfighter a lot, and hope I get a fancy new disc for that one too.

I have the one Doris Wishman double feature. It's nice and I'm glad I have one, it's a trip to have a boutique blu of a couple classic 35mm skin flicks, but it would decrease their specialness if I got any more. It would have to be particularly special to get another.

That said I'm open to any suggestions for especially interesting titles.

Edit: My ridiculously long and cumbersome post where I talk about those titles and even have a brief "review" of them.

I always find it so interesting that the HG Lewis films Blood Feast, 2000 Maniacs and Color Me Blood Red had novelizations back in the 60s (written by Lewis.) John Waters famously owns copies, and they go for a lot of money but I’m not lining up to buy one. Does anyone here have one?

The third Birdemic takes nearly an hour to get to the birds and a lot - a LOT - of it is brooding environmental doomerism. I think the director had one good idea he milked to death with awful execution the first time around, then was in on the joke that was himself the second time around and has now come back to do it all over again. It’s your money, do what you want, but $35 is kind of a lot for… that.

Edit: lol re: the Van Helsing novelization

We're spoiled in the era of physical media, and now streaming, for the most part we can just wait a couple of months and watch a movie that was in theaters. You couldn't do that in the 60's and 70's, so that's why novelizations were and to a much lesser extent today are a thing. If you wanted to watch a movie, and it wasn't playing anywhere near you, you had to read the book.

The really fun part about the novelizations are that they're based on earlier versions of the script, so there are all kinds of things that are different between them. I used to have a handful of them I got at thrift stores in the 90's, and I have no idea what happened to them. One I never had, but would love to get my hands on is Escape from New York, which is apparently a lot more bleak than the movie.

That said, hopefully VS is going to give us reprints of older ones, and new ones of newer movies, perhaps from the VSP line, based on earlier versions of the script.

The comic version of Blade Runner was based on the script so it doesn’t have “like tears in the rain” because that was an adlib by Rutger Hauer.
