But hey, what do I know, Arcane Ascension was voted in as third best top self-published fantasy after Cradle and The Sword of Kaigen and is about to get a Wraithmarked Kickstarter (in partnership with Podium, apparently) for a special limited edition hardcover.

Even the folks over in the SFF KU thread don't enjoy it because I asked whether I should try to get into it again and this was the first response I got:

God, it really does. Every time the main character looked at their mana watch(?) I can just see the person behind the keyboard typing "score" and looking at their stats and xp tnl.

I'm not too surprised to the the series do well on a reddit poll. IIRC the author is the creator of a LitRPG subreddit and a little push can go a long way in those.

i hadn't heard of her, it seems very heavy on the alt-history and also very heavy on institutional sex and BDSM, not really my thing but the reviews i checked out are all glowing.

What genre would you put it in?

They're all fantasy. Kind of epic fantasy, but without elves and dwarves and stuff. Have a definite "eastern" vibe. If I remember correctly, they're basically extremely elaborate and long “white girl ends up in the sultans harem“ bdsm romance novels.

There's I liked the melodramatic bisexual romance and some really good alt-europe high fantasy stuff in there but I checked out in book three where (spoiled for some real nasty sexual violence) she's repeatedly raped by a psycho prince guy with a spiked metal strapon in his hareem

Also it's a series where her superpower is being the world's ultimate sub who can perfectly heal from any superfical injury, if that doesn't sound up your alley it's probably best to pass

The pseudo-Middle East/harem stuff doesn't come in till the third book, IIRC.

It's more alternate world than alt-history; the world is basically our world with names swapped around and different religions, but there's no attempt to stick to a similar historical timeline.

As for the story itself, it's mostly spying and palace intrigue with lashings (see what I did there?) of BDSM -- the protagonist is a masochist, so if that's not your sort of thing, look elsewhere.

I'd compare it to Holly Black or some of Tanith Lee's work.

Yeah, it's basically a book about a really precocious and talented duelist, but instead of violence it's sex, and instead of killing people for political advantage she learns secrets and stuff. There's a big conspiracy and war and (from what I read of the extremely long first book) not very much actual sex writing for the sake of sex writing.

I wrote a bunch of complicated feelings about the handling of various sexual mores vs. our own society, but I can't imagine it leading to good posts, anyway I think it is a book that is very substantial and has a lot of power.

Somewhat true, but we see the evolution of societies and mores as a constant presence throughout the books (which necessitates exposure into some of that background detail). Herbert also doesn't really pull back the curtain too much on his world as the books go along except in service of the plot (e.g., expanding our view of the Guild as needed for Edric). Of course, this last point doesn't apply to the KJA/failson "sequels" and "prequels."

There are, of course, other things to complain about when it comes to the Herbert sequels, like the increasing horniness that permeates them.
