Although considering how awful books 5 & 6 are, maybe it's for the best that it's never made.

It's clearly a property that (imo) needs the HBO-style big budget episodic adaptation for best results, instead of whatever the mess we got was. Give it enough time and I'm sure we'll get a prestige TV adaptation at some point. I'm more surprised we didn't get a TV series while GoT was super hot. Which reminds me I need to get finish the second book of that series. Probably should re-read Gunslinger because it's been a few years since I first read it.

Yes, there's a goofy thing where Amazon had the rights but let them lapse, only for Flanagan's production company to snap them up and take them right back to Amazon.

He actually got ousted sometime in the early 2000s for getting a public blowjob at an Oscar party (which, post-Weinstein seems laughably tame as far as Hollywood sex scandals go). And it's probably not a coincidence that New Line started going to poo poo once he left - from a creative standpoint, he's legitimately one of the only good execs in Hollywood.

I wish I could recommend skipping 5 and 6 because they really are dreadful, but you can't really. At least book 7 is somewhat better (it's not fantastic or anything, but alright enough and I'm also in the camp that likes the ending so there's that). Absentia, Oculus and Dr. Sleep were all good and I've heard the Oujia sequel he did doesn't suck but I haven't seen that one yet. I don't think I ever got around to watching any of the Netflix series he did before canceling my subscription.

Midnight Mass is more drama than horror, but its also real loving good and worth subbing to Netflix for a month. And while its a passion project Flanagan wanted to make for a long time, its also a 'Salem's Lot adaptation with the serial numbers filed off.

Honestly I'm just glad the guy seems to be using his paycheck from his live action Alladin movie for Disney (which somehow made a billion dollars) to make small caper-type movies he cares about even if the movies themselves are pretty average. More filmmakers should follow that example
