I've set up a youtube playlist with 4 videos in it:

- 12 hours of focus music
- 12 hours of black screen
- 12 hours of focus music
- 12 hours of black screen

It's for my birds. It means that they'll have music playing during the day whilst I'm at work, and I don't have to disturb them in the morning. They wake up at 9am, I'm at work long before then. Caveat with this method is a playlist can't have duplicate videos, and I could only find two 12 hour black screen videos.

I've been having some annoyances with this method (I wish there was something easier, like a program that would mute my laptop during the hours I tell it), mainly that sometimes videos in the playlist will start skipped forward a few hours. No matter how many times I pull the seek bar back to 0, as soon as the playlist moves to the next video, it'll be skipped ahead again. Is there any surefire method of just getting the video to start from zero? I've tried messing with the url, skipping forward and back a bit in the hopes the video saves the new location, refreshing the page. Nothing seems to fix it. I end up just rearranging the order of the videos so that the videos that start a few hours in won't occur in the night or when I won't be home.

PS: if anyone knows of a simpler solution, let me know. I hate this youtube playlist method, and my birds are probably losing their god drat minds hearing the same song every day.

When I sign in and I'm watching a video (usually from one of my subscriptions), there will be the usual list of recommended videos in a column on the right (always from my subscribed channels). Recently (the past week or so) there will a be video for a subject I have zero interest in (and have never clicked on in the past) from a channel I've never heard of. It's always the third video down the list.

What's up with that?

I'm sure the devs are constantly fiddling with the recommendation algorithm to optimize various metrics. You're probably part of a test group that's trying to show you slightly different recommended videos to see how that affects your watch behavior.

I'm not an artist, but I do have a decent amount of ink, so I could be wrong.

I know a lot of artists refuse to tattoo anyone that uses a numbing cream. It can affect the texture of your skin, so the work could look great until it wears off and your skin relaxes. I saw a sign in one parlor that said if you used a numbing cream, they would not offer the free touch-ups they usually did. It can also be a pretty big shock if it wears off while they are still working and you haven't built up the pain tolerance throughout the session. I think it's also important for them to be getting feedback from the client throughout the process.

There is also of course the whole, "It's a tattoo, it's supposed to hurt" thing going on too.

Qubee I still think the best solution is an actual radio, tuned perhaps to classical station, with a cheap xmas light timer to turn it on and off at the desired times. Or if you are really particular about the music, set up an endless playlist and have the timer turn some external speakers on and off.

You can use an autohotkey script to change the Windows volume and use the Windows Task Scheduler to run that script at a specific time each day.

with autohotkey 2.0 you would create a "mute.ahk" file that just contained SoundSetMute true and an "unmute.ahk" file with SoundSetMute false and then create a scheduled task to run each of them.

Mute your pc on a schedule

I'd also bypass any youtube weirdness by downloading whatever videos (or just the audio of them) you want to reuse and playing them locally.

Follow up stupid question, my fellow stupid friends.

I've had a lot of people here and in other places tell me bandcamp is the way to go.

The way it's described makes it sound like it's for indie no name bands, but maybe that's just how I expect the online music store scene to be because I haven't looked anything but spotify since like 2009.

So realistically, if I listen to some heavy metal, some irish/scottish folk, some 80's music, and some odd youtube creators, am I going to find all that on bandcamp, all the songs I want, or am I only getting part of my music there.

And if I buy music there do I have a library of music I can redownload, or do I have a download link.

There's a pretty wide spread of musicians on bandcamp. They're not going to be comprehensive (in particular, the really big names probably aren't on there much), but there's a lot there. Pick some of the artists you listen to, and search for 'em, and you should pretty quickly get some sense of how thorough it is.

When you buy music on Bandcamp, you get a download link, and your purchase is added to your account, so you can download it on other devices as well. You can also stream directly from Bandcamp.

I just checked and most all of the metal I listen to is there and I'm not talking obscure indie stuff. You're not going to find the huge bands like Metallica or U2. Probably not groups that were big in the 80's either.

The account lets you download previous purchases.

Can confirm all of this.

The vast majority of artists will put at least one song off of their albums up as a free stream. A lot (most in my experience) will let you stream the whole thing for free, but Bandcamp will put up a nag screen if you do it too much. Last time I checked, said nag screen is an animation of a breaking cartoon heart and it's pretty effective :(

For whoever asked the fishtank question, I saw some great advice in the old Fix It Fast DIY forum thread. If you need to get rid of a large piece of glass that's too bulky to carry, especially tempered or safety glass, get some plastic sheeting and a can of spray glue to adhere it to both sides. Get a tarp under it whether you set it down, slide it under a door, or just use painter's tape on a wall under a mirror that's been attached with construction adhesive. Score the plastic sheet into manageable sized pieces with a utility knife, put on your PPE, and whack each section with a hammer. Use leather gloves and/or a snow shovel to move the big pieces into woven demolition bags (the ones you can jam a piece of rebar through as a carrying handle) and clean up anything left on the tarp.

In general, anytime you're getting rid of glass and are concerned it will break, glue plastic to it, if/when it breaks you'll end up with a lot fewer pieces to sweep up, vacuum, or find with your bare feet.

Hey all, I have a stupid question!

For the past ten years I have been subbed to spotify. Then one day I realized this means I have given spotify over $1,000 over ten years. I have not listened to 1000 unique songs in ten years, and songs cost a buck.

That all said, the next ten years will be different! I am going to start buying music!

I am trying to pick between Amazon and Apple.

What I understand so far:

Amazon:
Sucks to work for.
Pushes out small businesses.
Doesn't pay taxes.
Probably shafts creators of all stripes.
Is already in my home via Alexa.

Apple:
Pushes out small businesses.
Doesn't pay taxes.
Probably shafts creators of all stripes.
Is puritanical and censors what content can appear in apps, books, and visual media on its store.
Would be a new adopt for me, and I would in part have to break away from Amazon to start using Apple.

The stupid question: are there any pros and cons from a music quality standpoint, an ethical standpoint, a song store/library standpoint, or a song availability standpoint that make these two entities largely different from each other? Or am I comparing two lovely apples here?
I asked George Hrab how to make sure the most money from a purchase goes to the artist, and he said the best way was to buy from them directly, but also that he gets money one way or another and has a pretty good deal with iTunes. I also asked him to talk about theremins not because I had any particular questions, but because I thought it would be fun. Starts at 31:04 here for George giving his full answer and imitating theremin sounds.

As for Amazon vs Apple, both offer lossless and DRM-free music. Amazon will also give you a free digital copy if one is available when you buy a CD. If you have Prime music, agreements with record labels may change and you may find that you can't stream or download copies of songs or albums in your library. I've even had this happen with music I ripped from CDs and uploaded; I don't know from experience if Apple does the same. If you have storage, save copies locally and use a player like Foobar 2000 (disclaimer: designed for turbonerds) that will handle any format you have and figure out how to organize and sort it.

A couple of notes: if you want to organize and tag your music without paying for commercial software, use GPTMusicTag, which I just had ChatGPT write for me.

Save the above as install_python.bat, and run it by double-clicking on it. It will prompt you to enter a version number of Python to install, or press Enter to install the latest stable release. You can also press Q to quit. If Python is not found on the system, it will give you a Y/N prompt to install it. If you choose to install Python, the script will download the installer and run it silently with the specified version number, and then add the directory containing the Python executable to the system path.

Musicians need rehearsal spaces as well as studios, and those are the places you probably want. Check out local musician Facebook pages, it's likely that someone will let you rent by the hour (I gather it's a thing among jazz guys at the very least).
Otherwise, if you have a teacher in your network, schools are mostly empty in the evenings and have various spaces.

I've used a numbing cream for a tattoo before. I discussed it with the artist first and he explained that it does change the skin texture and partially fills up the pores that would normally get filled with ink so it does make the tattoo slightly less intense but not in a way that most people would notice.

We used it for linework and it was genuinely the easiest tattoo experience I've ever had but it was much rougher healing than I've experienced previously. It didn't work very well for shading at all, which he warned me it wouldn't because shading involves a lot of wiping off of the skin as it goes.

Basically it does have its place and its use but a lot of artists will reject it entirely because they aren't used to it or don't want to deal with how it changes the process (totally fair!).

There also absolutely is a segment of people who are like no the pain is part of the process. I think those people are silly.

Apparently the most efficient way to smoke them is by getting a titanium element scorching-hot with a butane lighter on a stand, and dropping the resin on the element while quickly inhaling all the vapour. But I don't have a good sense of what most people who aren't surrounded by it think.

It's okay if you have any questions.

I don't think a lot of people outside of tech are really paying all that much attention at this point.

Normal people aren't thinking about it at all, it's only really impacted online people so far.

Honestly the only real impact is that it's just automation of a type of labour that people didn't think would be automated so quickly. Art assets that is, obviously the chatgpt stuff is still worthless.

Stupid Photoshop question: I have a simple image that I'm using as my thumbnail for YouTube videos. Is it possible to tweak some setting in PS that will change the red/yellow/orange hues to a different colour palette, while only minimally affecting the text? I want to put out a video this coming 4/20 and change the reddish hue of the image to a leafy green, but having a bunch of them in different tints would be nice for the future.

Yes. The text is white so it won't be affected by hue adjustments.

There's probably a million ways to do it, but one is to add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer and then move the sliders around until it looks right.

The text is the only white thing in the image, so select by color, using the threshold setting to get all the text and none of the yellow highlights. Feather the selection by a few pixels so it will blend in and not look weird later.

Take this selection and past it to a new layer. Keep that layer as the uppermost. Now you can do any edits you want to the main layer and the text will come through clean on top.

Holy hookrat Sally smoking crack in the alley!

And don't be afraid to stack multiple adjustment layers if you can't get it quite right in one go. A "color balance" adjustment layer can also be helpful if hue/saturation isn't working 100%.
