Play posted:Unless they go pillaging and raiding on longships, they can't be vikings. 'Viking handicrafts' is a big time misnomer and your high school history teacher ladies should know that Store Norske posted:Viking er i moderne språkbruk en handelsmann, landnåmsmann eller sjøkriger fra Norden som deltok i reiser til Vest- og Øst-Europa for å handle, bosette nytt land eller plyndre i perioden mellom cirka 800 og 1050. I dagligtalen anvendes ofte betegnelsen viking om befolkningen i Norden i vikingtiden. A viking is in modern usage a trader, settler or sea warrior from the nordic countries, who travelled to Western or Eastern Europe to trade, settle new land, or plunder in the period between ca 800 and 1050. In daily speech, the teem viking is often used about the population in the nordic region during the viking age. Though you're also not entirely wrong. We have a combat group that wail on each other in blunt but period-correct gear, and an association with a group that's building a viking ship with time-appropriate tools and methods ... but it doesn't really count unless we use the fighters and ship to sail to Brighton and rob the tourists.

Welp, there you have it. My guess would be that the EU(parliament and some governments even) will follow suit soon and then the pants shitter is gonna be a government certified genocider™, which will have some pretty interesting consequences. Denying a genocide in a public setting is a criminal offence in Germany.

Lammasu posted:I am honestly surprised that more of these failed generals aren't defenestrated. Seems kind of weird that it's reserved for oligarchs and the political dissidents get poisoned while failed military commanders just get fired. Repeat after me: Loyalty trumps competence. Putin's regime works on the basis that so long as you remain completely loyal to Putin, you don't need to fear for your life. You can be absolutely dogshit at what you do, and the worst you can expect is to be fired. But if you are in a position of power you say one word against your dear leader, you fall out of a window. These generals are being fired for being bad at their jobs, not for betrayal.

So the "Loyalty trumps competence" isn't even a new thing.

My firm belief is that replacing the turret with a 2.4" diameter black powder cannon that shoots small aluminum cans full of concrete would be 100% legal, since black power weapons aren't guns and smooth bore cannons < 2.5" are not destructive devices. Terrorist Girkin started lamenting again about how Mighty Russia is no good on the battlefield, says Prigozhin is an idiot who can only spend lives for marginal daily gains, and keeps begging for ammo that they don't have. He makes reference to how Zhukov attained victories at any cost, while Rokossovsky, who was better, at least tried to save his men's lives and his allotted equipment.quote:Strelkov Igor Ivanovich #KRP

Karate Bastard posted:Can somebody explain why Russia would want to blow up their moneymaker pipe? At the time, Russia was crowing about how Europe would freeze in the upcoming winter and lose their resolve. I no longer have the link to hand but I believe someone replied to me in here or in one of the previous threads pointing out some contract chicanery as well - e.g. Russia voluntarily shutting off deliveries put them in breach whereas a tragic accident oh no the pipeline blew up for no reason at all [smirk] notionally got them out of said penalties. Also consider that by the time the pipelines exploded Germany was going pedal to the floor on divestment, reducing demand, replacing natural gas demand with renewables, finding other sources. It's probably fair to say it was no longer the moneymaker pipe it had been.

Russia wanted nord stream 2 switched on, so first the pumps on 1 'failed', then when the dodgy pump was serviced and returned in full order, it wasn't plugged in. Shortly after, both pipes of ns1 and only one pipe of ns2 get destroyed. Master chess move - if you want more gas, you must complete nord steam 2!
