What Chromecast do you have? I think there are two versions of the white puck... One that does 4k/HDR and one that only does 1080/no HDR.

Oh poo poo, good question. The photos of these two look exactly the same.

Edit: It's the 4K HDR one. The resolution was set to 720/60hz so I swapped that to 4k 60hz. With HDR enabled and content set to match the dynamic range playing the movie didn't kick on the HDR mode on the TV. If I turn HDR on always, it goes on but it's still the same video feed from the app just with a higher overall brightness enabled.

Eh, who knows? This crud should be easier than it is. I bought the Chromecast in the first place because so many streaming apps on the PS5 only did stereo sound.

Solution below worked for Paramount and HBO Max. Did not work for Prime but I wouldn't be surprised if they lock that to their products. Couldn't test Netflix because I don't have the 4k streaming there.

Edit2: Oh wow, found the problem. The think preventing a video mode change to HDR is a setting called "Match Content Frame Rate" if this is set to seamless (default) then this ends up preventing the changeover. The description says it'll match the frame rate ONLY if the TV can perform a seamless transition (no brief black screen while output shifts). If you set this to Non-Seamless then it transitions over and HDR works. Apparently seamless switching is coming to tvs this year so most people will want this set to Non-Seamless. I figure with it set to seamless the video will just use whatever resolution and frame rate the selection menu outputs at.

Hopefully this helps someone else too! It wasn't a device option but a user error because these descriptions are pretty hard to suss out.

THE TAXES! THE FINGER THING MEANS THE TAXES!

I've been watching lots of cartoons with my boys:

X-Men: The Animated Series is on Disney Plus, and sadly, it is very hard to watch. The animation is trash. This was a staple cartoon for me, so it was a real bummer because I was hype for my kids to watch it.

Batman: The Animated Series is on HBO Max, and it's really good! I think I like it even more now, and my kids are digging it. That Mr. Freeze origin episode, masterpiece.

I've also been getting sick of watching the same animated movies over and over, so I've been putting on stuff that I missed out on when they came out.

Treasure Planet was better than I thought it would be. Silver is an underrated Disney villain. The CGI is really lovely in parts, especially compared to . . .

Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron, on Netflix. I had zero desire to ever watch this movie, and it was unexpectedly very enjoyable. The CGI in this one was used really well, especially for the time it came out. My older son was enthralled, he was real worried when the horses fell in the rapids, on edge during the train crash sequence (which was incredibly well done), and let out a big cheer when Spirit made his huge jump. Strong recommend.

I'm disappointed that Titan AE isn't on any streaming services.

The first one is has some corniness in the writing but it’s aggressively entertaining and worth it for everything involving ceaser and ultimately the ape rampage payoff. The second two are more solid all around and a bit more stylish.

Overall very fun trilogy with a good arc imo.

Well, of course I know him.
He's me.
The only bad PotA movie is still the Burton remake, and even that one has pretty impressive ape makeup and decent late 90s/early 00s “every single spaceship MUST be round and curvy” production design.

The 70s sequels are mostly solid and hold up decently well considering their age. Beneath and Escape are schlocky fun, and Conquest rides that wave of early 70s “we’re all completely hosed” sci-fi nihilism. Battle is the only one I remember being kinda dull.

I saw it at the drive-in when theaters were shutdown during covid. it was a Footloose/Grease double bill. Footloose is great. It plays with the premise completely seriously. Not a wink or nod anywhere.

COVID loving sucked for lots of reasons, but it did get the movie studios to let some of their movies out of the vault for theatrical exhibition. Paramount and WB were really good about this.

Honestly most of the studios have usually been willing to play ball, it's just Disney and the fact that Disney owns Fox now that cuts off such a huge swathe of things.

During that time I did notice Disney barely let any back catalog movies back in theaters. The only ones I can remember are Hocus Pocus and Empire Strikes Back, and that was just because it was the 40th anniversary.

A Million Little Things(Hulu/ABC) is such suburban house mom drama porn a la This is Us, that I got sucked into while casually watching with my partner... but you bet your rear end I teared up during the finale, ever if it was telegraphed from the start.

On a happier note, Minari, After Yang, The Farewell, and The Green Knight are on Tubi along with the 2022 Korean action film The Killer which is really cool.

And yet, somehow, now it's my fault ...
Caught up with Crazy Rich Asians, which I frankly wouldn't have watched except a friend of mine from Singapore was so angered by it, and there were so many chin-stroking thoughtpieces written about it, I figured it could be an entertaining mess.

It wasn't. It's a bland mix of romcom cliches, Asian culture clichés, stuffed to the gills with every Asian actor currently acting, lumbered with a bland central couple, and alternates between wealth-porn and a tourist advertisement for Singapore. Seriously: characters stop to gawp at mansions, clothes, food, each other. I assume the original novel has something going for it but it doesn't show here.

What the heck, not only is Dungeons and Dragons Honor Among Thieves not terrible, it's legitimately one of my favorite movies of the year. Who would have imagined it was possible to make a good D&D movie.

I was a huge D&D nerd in Junior High and High School so there were lots of Forgotten Realms easter eggs but I think it's approachable for someone who couldn't care less about lore.

And that mega Easter egg in the arena... Had to pause it I was laughing so hard (and to get a better look).

Yeah I know close to nothing about DnD other than I think I read some icewind Dale books when I was like 10? And I still had a great time at that movie, it was so fun and it's nice to see some fantasy lore that isn't just the same Tolkien poo poo recycled for the 100th time
