Vtuber stuff is very weird to me since the bigger companies that do it model themselves off how Japanese/Korean idol groups are run, and that whole industry is some of the most rancid poo poo imaginable. They have to call getting fired or quitting "graduating" because it sounds "nicer", they have to pay for all their streaming equipment and also their own merch, and a few have lost their jobs over poo poo like accidentally admitting they have a boyfriend (which drives people who pretend-date these women absolutely nuts). I think some of the women who do vtubing are funny and seem like nice people, but the industry as a whole is incredibly scummy and the anime aesthetic attracts some of the worst freaks on planet Earth. Also I don't really like streaming in general since I'd rather play a fun game myself than watch it be played.

Yeah the Japanese idol industry just feel like rhe grossest thing ever. Though I'm not sure if they're any different from Hollywood..

Furries go and hang out with other furries. It's a weird hobby, but at least its a social one. Paying to watch someone pretending to be an anime girl playing video games and pogging or whatever is much sadder than going to a furry con

My neighbor's kid is 18 and makes fursuits in their spare time. Honestly the parents are just happy that they are hanging out with kids their age and making friends, something that they apparently struggled with for a long time. No hate here.

sorry to continue the derail but this sentence has been haunting me. this posting voice has grown increasingly common on the forums, especially regarding chat threads. it is implied that the people in these "spaces" are "normal" "pals" who are "hanging out" and any aspersions cast are salty, bitter misanthropes essential tossing pebbles and stones at the well adjusted kids on the swing set. but i dont think this is the case most of the time. i think its really pathetic to sit in a twitch stream and "hang out" with a bunch of depraved pornography addicts "tipping" "bits" to a cartoon character or obsessively "shitposting" about embarrassing consumerist "hobbies"

my unsolicited advice would be to stop logging into these streams, spend the time doing anything else. literally anything. take a 12 pack into your apartment common area and try to make a friend. read a book. i dont care. just dont do the thing where you sit in 12 chat rooms at once with a fanservice anime on your 5th monitor and go increasingly insane. if this doesnt apply to you dear reader then im glad for it, but i wager the preponderance of the "pals" in these streams are exactly that.

it's "calm hitlering" but for hosed up parasocial relationships in my opinion

gently caress this. The person I specifically I mentioned was someone I've met nearly a decade ago and talked with before twitch was a thing, and saw their lil twitch rig system as a neat example of it. I was trying to find an example of what one could do with a model and instead I got pages of goons trying to pin their weird neurosis about other online circles into "advice" that would just mean "be neurotic about everyone but on the specifically approved way".

Vtubers are here to stay. Make peace with your gods. I don't give a poo poo about streaming and don't watch any of it but these people collectively get millions of views so clearly there's a sizeable audience for it. Some of your coworkers probably go home and spend their evening watching an anime girl click heads in CoD

I mean I get the feedback about them and after a lot of horror stories about them it would be silly to not expect such a pushback, but seeing "No this is all a big sign of social malaise, you should uproot a good chunk of your friend group" got to me because these aren't just people I watch and see on a screen, but people I've talked to for nearly two decades and greatly helped me in many ways.

I'm not really watching any kind of streaming stuff, but is there a fundamental difference between a dude doing soy face while saying gamer words for money as opposed to doing the same except while running an anime and doing a fake voice? It all seems equally weird to me.

not really, tho i'm convinced that the ultimate goal of the companies running popular vtubers is to have eternal characters that they can exploit without regard to the actual people behind them. i expect to see human/chatbot fusions soon, like the call center workers who can only respond via soundboards

tho that does raise the question of how much this poo poo is really driven by the idea that there is an actual, physical woman behind the anime who might gently caress these incels (in their fantasies). the fact that they are paying money to have their chats read on stream is apparently not enough of a clue as to the actual nature of this parasocial relationship but i imagine if you rip the human out entirely the whole thing falls apart

(none of this is to suggest that i blame or dicourage women [because afaict it's predominately women] from using avatars to stream. the egregious poo poo i still see directed at identifiable women online in gaming spaces in tyool 2023 is all the justification they need. the poo poo you can see directed at vtubers can at least be deflected at the avatar)

not at all. i feel the same way about the whole twitch ecosystem that purposely curates an audience of sycophant paypigs to pony up for big blinged out adrenaline-rushing twitch fireworks or balloons paying them $50 every 10 minutes to read your name for a second or write it in pencil on their wall. the only difference is at least a grody 40 year old neckbeard is an obvious grody 40 year old neckbeard and not a 12 yea- 9999 year old dragon. the calculus for the object of desire changes a bit with that last component but principle is the same
