In the sense of Freud being derided for having sex be everywhere, a lot of these superhero films are precisely the opposite. That is to say, one of the best things about BvS’s narrative is the psychosexuality pulsating throughout the film, with stuff like Luthor’s red jolly rancher scene and Batman’s vampire-monster mommy. The REAL Goobusters posted:People thought Zuckerburg was actually normal and that the casting and performance of Jesse was not accurate at the time. Putting him as Lex showcased that Zack was ahead of the curve since people didn't really get it at the time. It’s also how Snyder integrates the Zuck aspect into his interpretation of Luthor as an acerbic critique of Watchmen’s Ozymandias (He draws a parallel with Ozymandias’ obsession with Alexander the Great in the Gordian Knot sequence). Superman is Dr. Jeckyll/Mr. Hyde, about a duality of identity and the push/pull of altruism vs. selfishness, and this is why Bad Guy Superman stories are so frequently written and so easy to execute.

As for capes, Dracula's cape is red on at least one side, guess whose costume doesn't have a hint of red? That's right, not Superman's! 3. Superman can work at night. Dracula doesn't have to work at night. He moves around the day just fine. He just turns into a more timid version that nobody would ever suspect to be Dracula. 4. Wait, Dracula has gadgets? Dracula is old, but newly come; he is powerful, but he cannot act without aid; he is not just wealthy but noble, with the arrogance that implies; he is above all foreign. That's why Dracula is Jor-El or Zod, and Superman is Alucard, still tied to the dark world of his birth although he is a mighty opponent to it. Batman is Van Helsing, the man with the plan, who has through extraordinary effort come to a deeper understanding of the scope of the evil he has taken it upon himself to battle. Meanwhile, that makes the Flash Simon Belmont: heir to a long and continuing legacy of utterly clowning on monsters.

It’s kind of an elephant in the room: this handsome billionaire playboy never fucks, but is really primed for psychosexual interpretation over why. He’s an adult obsessed with his dead parents, who’s unmarried and only has performative relationships in public, and constantly finds himself in these extremely suggestive dynamics with lady supervillains who go real horny with it. On top of that, he lives with a singular teenage ward half the time, where the vibes are always weird as gently caress. Bruce Wayne’s sexuality is an unavoidably strange but prominent detail of the character, vs. Superman or Flash who typically just have partners and aren’t that weird about it. It’s the MCU I’d describe as truly sexless. Because not only do almost no characters gently caress, sex feels like an irrelevant detail even in concept. Tony Stark, introduced pre-Disney as a gleeful, arrogant womanizer, quickly becomes team dad. Black Widow, implied to be a femme fatale who was essentially sex trafficked, has instead become characterized as the team mom; her worst trauma is that she can’t bear children, not that she faced horrific sexual abuse, which is never discussed at all.

Damnit was going to post this while catching up. He also relies on tools and scholarly knowledge, and recruits sidekicks to fight his nemeses. Interestingly I feel like a lot of the heroes use various elements from all these myths, some random observations: - the Flash had his powers awakened by a lightning strike like Frankenstein - Wonder Woman is getting kind of the short straw in this convo but she’s got the longevity and nobility and warrior prowess to make her as close to Dracula as the others (or the Mummy actually) - Superman was already partially inspired by the Golem although not sure if we are counting that - Cyborg while being obviously close to Frankenstein is also a forced/unwanted transformation he can’t fully control like the Wolfman

Oh yeah, it's one element where the director/author having sexual hangups or otherwise weirdness can be a fun extra to colour the tone and themes. BvS even plays with the contrast as Superman fucks, and Lois Lane is all down for it (and frankly, who can blame her) while Batman has an anonymous woman in his bed no one draws any attention to, sex is just another bland background vice he's trying to drown his failures in. Hell, even The Lego Batman Movie has themes there- and of course Batman's crush music is Died In Your Arms Tonight. Doesn't that fuckin' say everything?

Nowadays comic book super heroes are thought of as their own distinct thing but it is useful not to forget that they're a straight progression of pulp stories, penny dreadfuls, and such.

Yeah Batman especially the early comics with like Dr. Death and stuff were a strong mix of crime story pulp with gothic horror pulp and that interplay of old and new was part of the appeal. A lot of those early Batman and Spectre stories were extremely similar to already existing pulp and horror stories that you'd read or hear on the radio about supernatural killers that have to be tracked down or whatever paranormal stuff is going on. But all the superheroes back then took from this stuff pretty readily. Neo Rasa fucked around with this message at 18:59 on Jun 10, 2023 |

His relationships are all doomed, but he’s constantly trying to lay it down. The Netflix shows now bleeding into the MCU are probably a good thing, because the former didn’t shy away from horny Matt Murdock, so his first real Disney outing still saw him gently caress She-Hulk. I liked this detail. Because in the Nolan movies, his dates with models or yacht excursions are presented as pure theater. For everyone else’s benefit; there’s no sense that he actually cares about it. The random lady in his container home highlights some failed attempt to self-soothe. He’s miserable, alienated, locked into his trauma, and obsessed with Superman…and literally trying to gently caress the pain away, unsuccessfully. In general, I love that movie for leaning into how broken Batman is. Like, not in a cool brooding way; he’s a weird and pathetic psycho who’s unpleasant to be around. He doesn’t need to fight crime, he needs to go to loving therapy.

Beat me to it. I was honestly surprised to see a Batman that has one night stands and washes painkillers down with wine, there's almost no version of Batman that gets drunk and fucks random women. At most he enjoys a glass of scotch or whisky or something, and keeps his sexual encounters to rooftops with other masked weirdos.
