kind of weird seeing a mural of the characters looking exactly like they did in the cartoon in the middle of a bunch of live action scenes

I mean...

Sabine is an artist, so who looks like what at least has an explanation (Heck Rebels itself could very well be the story as she remembers it, especially since she was the one narrating the epilogue)

There's a new Lego Ghost set that includes Jacen Syndulla, who's sporting a new look as well

(That at least can be slightly rationalized as Sabine colored his hair; here's hoping they at least remember that his ears are green)

I kind of wonder how much of the scale is actually borne out by the models.

ninjahedgehog

It's time to kick the tires and light the fires, Big Bird.

tbh I think the scale is directly derived from the models. We know an X-wing is X(heh) meters long based on the size of the pilot, and when we see it next to the Star Destroyer it's Y% of its length, therefore the length of the Star Destroyer is blah blah blah and that's what goes in Incredible Cross Sections.

The problem is that model makers only care (correctly, tbf) about what looks good on screen and the sourcebook writers can only start their work after the model makers are already done so it's not like they can go back and say "hey this is a little weird, any changes to be made here?" What the witers probably should have done though is say "well it looks exactly like an ISD so unless there's something in the text saying it's bigger, it's just gonna be the same size as an ISD because that's the logical assumption to make, and anyone who busts out the measuring tape next to their TV is gonna be annoyed with us for other reasons anyway."

The ultimate problem maker though is JJ and whoever originally decided to sign off on the superweapons looking exactly like ISDs in the first place, because setting aside all the scale issues, holy loving poo poo that was the absolute least creative choice they could have possibly made. Everything else is directly downstream from that dumb decision

Yeah it was pretty tragically hilarious how the ffg dogfighting tabletop game just gave up on the new trilogy giving them anything to work with after ep VIII.

It was always odd they decided what a human/Twi'lek hybrid would look like was 'have green ears, I guess.'

My favorite is the stupid superlaser ISD from Rise of Skywalker, which is completely identical in every single way to the OT version except for the dumb penis laser and that fact that, for some absolutely inexplicable reason, it's like 2.5x the volume.

I like to imagine that every single facet is the same as the ISD 1 but scaled up, so you've got crewmembers balancing themselves on the edges of giant-sized toilets and using their fists to slam dinner plate-sized keyboard keys one at a time

The practical reason for that IIRC is that because the plot was developed so late, to save time they had to basically reuse the CGI model from Rogue One with minimal changes, hence why all of a sudden the design from thirty years earlier with a penis laser is there. (In my headcanon, the penis laser is an upscaled version of the one designed for Lord Nyax). That of course only shunts the problem to the overall development of the movie.

The funny thing is, the Eclipse from Dark Empire (explicitly named as such in the draft script) was going to be in the Colin Treverrow version of Episode IX which didn't feature a resurrected Palpatine, and the concept art even used the Dark Empire design directly. https://imgur.com/a/fbZFcbC

In the opposition direction from the previous human/toilet hybrids from TCW which keep the head tails but have notably less angular facial proportions.

The TRoS stuff can gently caress right off, I mean the TLJ ships. There's one that's clearly just a CR-90 with bits stuck on and that thing is only 120 meters long. It should be almost invisible beside the Raddus at 3.5km long, so they decided it's actually like 320 meters long. Then you've got the problem of the Supremacy, which is only 13km long, but loving 60km wide. Again, the Raddus should have been invisible next to it, and the rest of the Resistance fleet wouldn't even register. You'd be able to kill the entire crew just by getting it to try turning too sharply.

Yeah. He did a ton of EU stuff before they started getting really lazy and cheap with covers.

He did almost all of the Bantam covers outside of the Thrawn Trilogy and a few others. There’s some quote from him about how much he enjoyed doing Shadows of the Empire.

He was created by Paul and Hollace Davids, so probably the result of author fiat (and the hair's explained as a genetic throwback and caused him to be considered impure by other Hutts)

It's true, Struzan knocked it out of the park for some terrible books. Even if he was limited to the actor's likenesses in the OT.

Like, I can tell you the exact scene Han's face is taken from in the Crystal Star cover. Same for Leia in Children of the Jedi.

Leia gets a hat, or the helmet from ROTJ, in the paperback version of The Courtship of Princess Leia. The hardcover cover is different for some reason. Both are Struzan covers.

Yeah I've never been sure about that one. His hair is definitely not Han. Which is weird, because it doesn't match what I've read about the contract, which is, "Must look like they did in the OT."

I actually wonder if that's why they changed it for the paperback. Someone said, "Wtf is that? We can't do that."
