Curzon does make nice stuff though, shame this set is going to be region B locked..maybe criterion has the US rights or something

Criterion just released a 3-disc Blu set of the Europe Trilogy (The Element of Crime, Epidemic, and Europa), plus they've already released Breaking the Waves and Antichrist. Shout! Factory put out The House That Jack Built licensed from IFC. Looks like Dancer in the Dark is still with Warner in North America (current DVD is through Warner Archive), so that's a likely Criterion license.

Jk, good point. I’ll see if it’s on one of the services!

Yeah you should really watch some of the F13 movies before buying any. None of those movies are particularly good which is part of the appeal. Ranking them is a perennial conversation starter in the horror movie thread. Every entry is somebodies favorite and someone else’s least favorite.

Only owning the first one seems like a bizarre decision though; not a whole lot of people are big on that particular one. This isn’t a franchise like Halloween where the first movie is miles better than the sequels. If none of the sequels happened, the first F13 would just be another also-ran slasher.

I actually like that it's a total swerve. I'm hard-pressed to think of a horror franchise where the sequels are as good, and I'd put this one in there too. I'm sure people will say things like TCM2 or ED 2 or whatever in response to this, which is not to say there aren't entertaining sequels..just not any that hit the same highs as the original

It never stops.

I say watch Fridays 1-4, that'll give you enough peaks and valleys and tonal swings to give a pretty good picture of the franchise as a whole. If you dig it, grab the entire box from Shout, 'cause when those dry up it's gonna be a hot minute before the next full box set 'cause the rights issues are a bowl of spaghetti.

If you just want the hits, throw on 2, 4 and 6.

This really boils my piss, as these discs were pretty expensive at $38 each and to include lazy scans is lame. I really dig what Second Sight has been doing and it's frustrating when they make correctable mistakes.

I'll still continue to buy every disc they put out

:pwn: :pwn: :pwn: :pwn: :pwn:
That was one reason I was massively turned off of Imprint early on. I really wanted Hard Eight but the same old-rear end scan used over 20 years ago for the DVD and no new extras is one thing if you price it accordingly, but by the time it gets over here it's crowding $50.

I've only had one Imprint, the As Good As it Gets, and that was kinda a fluke. At least it had one new video extra, though it wasn't all that substantial. I gave it to my mum and got the Twilight Time release, which has a booklet and classier art imo.

Just like all these labels, they work with what the studio gives them. I felt the price they were asking for what they were offering was unreasonable.

How's the Arrow Re-Animator? I need to upgrade my non anamorphic DVD. It's signed by Jeffery Combs so I've been putting it off. Should I just wait for an UHD?

Also has anyone framed a signed DVD? You can't really just frame the cover because it would be backwards. I'm thinking of getting a small shadowbox.

I'm annoyed that the 4K is only available through the Collector's Edition, which has a bunch of other crap that I don't want. They did the same thing for Belle, so I hope their UHDs don't have an effective price tag of +$50 or whatever.

Right now I tell myself I already have Waterworld on UHD. I don’t need the Ulysses Cut. But I can’t guarantee I’ll never change my mind.

I’ve seen the TV edit and it’s way the gently caress too long and paced funny, so the tiny bit of piss machine and swearing probably won’t do much for me.

I've actually reminded myself there's a normal-rear end UHD release that also comes with a streaming copy and a normal bluray of it, might just do that. I don't need my thickest single movie release to be Waterworld.

The feature length Maelstrom documentary is exclusive to the Arrow editions so at the very least pick up one of the Blu-rays that people who are upgrading are (probably) clearing out on eBay. Only the theatrical cut is on 4k so you won't miss anything.

The booklet is great and the poster and art cards are cool, as is the box, if you want a reason to hunt down either the original or 4k LE. It also is the only way to get the television cut, I haven't watched it yet so I can't offer thoughts.

I have watched the documentary twice though.

I have two signed DVDs: Batman Begins SE, signed by Robert Uslan, and Porn Star: The Legend of Ron Jeremy, signed by Ron Jeremy :pwn:

I'm probably not going to frame them. But a shadowbox would be my choice, if you mount it right.

The Vinegar Syndrome sale allowed us to pick up New York Ninja, which was a blast, and because of that we recently got Ninja In The Claws of the CIA and watched it this morning. That movie was hot nonsense and hilarious. It's actually incredible that New York Ninja makes more sense and is a better film despite being a redubbed reconstruction. Ruled. John Liu is a singular human being. Also the packaging was awesome.

There were huge sections of the movie randomly in Spanish, I assume because that was the highest quality audio able to be rescued? Or was that just a quirk of the PS5? Either way it made it way funnier. Great stuff.

Literally the only time "release order" isn't the proper order to watch something in is Witch From Mercury if you aren't already a fan of Gundam or mecha series. In that case you watch episode 1, and then watch the prologue.

Watching Way Of The Dragon on the Criterion Bruce Lee collection and it's awesome how it has four different audio tracks plus the commentary but the menus are...not the most well-designed. It took a lot of futzing about to get the right sub track and audio track we wanted. Maybe I'm just getting old. Nevertheless, it's working now.

I'm tempted to actually get a standalone 4K player instead of just using my PS5 if just because the OSD annoys me
