Depends on the sensitivity they are set at, IE: you want it to find a knife in someone's pocket, but you don't want to find the pins in their humerus from that dirtbike injury when they were a teenager. And they don't really "see" per-se, That's the realm of mm wave for seeing through clothes, and 2d/3d x-ray for seeing through the body. Metal detectors, specifically the walk-through and wand types spit out a magnetic field and disruption of that field when metal is passed through it is measured by the device. The magnetic field's strength and sensitivity of the pickup determines how deep it can detect. Flesh is really good at attenuating that field.

Oh man it gets better. So I was a little off on the timeline...the suspect wasn't caught directly from the armed robbery, it was a robbery from days ago and he and his car matched the description.
