I've been watching Are You Afraid of the Dark which has been great, but I want to try something new, and The Outer Limits feels a little too similar. I didn't watch much horror TV other than X-Files at the time because I was too s-s-scared so I'm pretty ignorant of the basics. Buffy was too soapy the few times I tried it, but I wonder about trash like The Crow tv series, or Poltergeist: The Legacy. I suppose maybe Tales from the Crypt, though I would argue it deserves your attention while it's playing

Sounds like you need an early 90s TV show that you can pay little attention to but is occasionally amusing... Quiet, it's starting! And it's on

Ooh, yeah maybe I should give Monsters another shot.STAC Goat posted:Supernatural isn’t quite 90s but definitely fits as horror tv you can turn on and half watch and just zone in for the really good stuff and end of episode meta plot recaps. And there’s like 13 seasons of it so it will last. Fair, definitely up for more modern stuff that just channels that 90s vibe. Though I've watched Evil, which is great. I tried watching one episode of Supernatural ages ago and didn't vibe with it, but it could have just been my mood or a bum episode.

It starts off a little shaky, but give it a few episodes until it realizes just how asinine they can get away with being and then it hits quality status.

One of my favorite things about Evil compared to X-Files it doesn't go totally into "yeah everything paranormal is real" and stuff will sometimes end up being a hoax. And when the later seasons start going fully batshit crazy there is a game-like element of like "what is the skeptical reading here?" that can be fun. And none of this undercuts the horror elements.

And when the later seasons start going fully batshit crazy there is a game-like element of like "what is the skeptical reading here?" that can be fun. And none of this undercuts the horror elements. Agreed. Other things I really appreciate about Evil: 1. The show is accepting of both evil in the supernatural sense, and evil in the human sense. Both are treated as equally legitimate, and neither cheapens the other. 2. The theology that the show presents -- the closer you are to God or the Devil, the more likely you are to be able to see actual Holy or Evil things in the world -- is an interesting change from most religious-themed shows like this. A lot of shows default to 'oh, this guy is evil, everyone can see him as a literal demon', but Evil subverts it by making you work for those revelations. It's a clever way to track a character's morality throughout the seasons based on what they can and cannot see. 3. There are a LOT of loose ends. Of course, there are some that I think are bullshit because they're never explained, but a lot of their cases are left on this ambiguous note because they themselves don't have firm answers too. The show is generally pretty good about giving explanations for the 'monster of the week' stuff but sometimes there are no answers, and it's left to you to decide what really happened. Again, a nice subversion of this type of show. 4. It's not afraid to be funny or stupid when it deserves to be. Kristen beating Leland with a shoe, or the Bouchard girls bullying Leland over the internet are both funny moments that feel like tension release without spoiling the mood entirely. The Bouchard girls specifically are excellent because while they're annoying in the early parts of the show, they eventually turn into a great tension buster in-between some of the heavier stuff. 5. The show is loving BRUTAL about organized religion, but is also pretty sympathetic to it. It's equally willing to show that religion provides comfort and relief for people in turmoil, but it's also likely to call out racism, sexism, and exploitation, especially in the Catholic church. It even has the Catholic Priest sometimes admit, 'Yeah man, the church has some bullshit beliefs, we're working on changing it', which is refreshing. Evil is such a fun show, highly recommend that goons watch it.
