It's interesting that Gideon's universe isn't really written to be, say, used in a tabletop RPG. We're not treated to grand details of a Reaper-class battleship or Cohort ranks or whatever. If it's important, Muir will tell us. (Probably.)

It’s mentioned in Nona that John (and by extension his empire) are holding industrial concerns on the resettlement planets to lifetime contracts signed before they realized he was immortal.

Sweet baby Cthulhu, they're in clubs.

Back to quadrants. There is a non-erotic quadrant called "clubs" in which two people are really really bad for each other (and for the universe) as would-be spades. The third partner in a clubs relationship, in this case Babs, tries to keep the two crazy people (Ianthe and Coronabeth) from exploding and destroying everything around then.

It fits, damnit.

Quertycoatl, you're right. How the hell is Gideon managing to get her hands on titty porn without access to goods or services?

EMERGENCY POWER TO PARTY
1. Aiglamene was a soldier out in the wider universe before she came to the Ninth.
2. Where there are soldiers, there is porn.
3. Logically, this implies that Gideon swiped porn from Aiglamene's stash.

alright, this is a longstanding conundrum in the fandom and I have two theories on it.

Theory 1:
The Ninth gets occasional supply shuttles and Gideon has figured out some sort of system for acquiring contraband magazines from the shuttle crews via barter. Unsure what she would trade - labor? minor sacred artifacts? bones? We know quality oss is an important commodity (per overheard logistics conversations from officers on Jod's flagship) so I can imagine bones being a reasonable medium of exchange in the informal economy.

Theory 1b: Gideon doesn't trade with the shuttle crews, but sneaks aboard the shuttles and swipes new porn from the crew' stashes.
Theory 1c: New girlie magazines arrive on the supply shuttles because Gideon has forged subscription orders from the Reverend Parents, the same way she forged her Cohort paperwork at the beginning of GtN. The crews think they are delivering legitimate porn shipments to Pelleamena and Priamhark.

Theory 2:
The one thing the Ninth has a lot of are tombs, which are full of dead people of many varieties from throughout the past myriad. We know these people were buried with a wide variety of grave goods. We also know the Houses use flimsy (plastic) as their main medium for printed materials, which would degrade slowly in an Earth-like environment and even more slowly in a place as cold and arid as the Ninth. I posit that Gideon's skin mags could be ancient relics she delved from the deep catacombs beneath Drearburh, the same way she acquired her sunglasses.

If anyone is interested in what Homestuck is about but are unsure about actually reading because it's a) kind of an undertaking and b)maybe you're not that interested in actually reading it yourself, I highly recommend the Homestuck Made This World podcast. It's hosted by two media scholars, one of whom read it live and the other is reading it for the first time, and they go through and recontextualize it historically, based on what was going on in pop culture and the internet as it was being written. GtN is name dropped a couple times and one episode points out bits of HS writing that probably, most definitely inspired HtN. One of their patreon bonus eps also goes over the fanfic Tamsyn is most famous for writing. One of the hosts is a goon and uses the old HS threads as sort of an anchor for what was going on in parts of the fandom as things were happening. It's a great podcast and I'd highly recommend it, if I haven't already done so in this very thread.

Edit: speaking of which, I would be very interested in Michael's take on Unwanted Guest, given that he specializes in Shakespearean literature

Oh this is by the Just King Things folks. I was never into homesick back when the threads were active and still only know it through cultural osmosis.

Goodbye stealing souls, hello stealing booty.
Just finishing a reread of Gideon and Gideon sacrificing herself for Harrow still seems to come out of left field. They go from life long enemies to grudgingly working together over the course of most of the book. Then they have their emotional moment in the pool and suddenly it’s I can’t live without you/i will sacrifice myself for you? It seems very rushed. And even though I knew the sacrifice was coming, it was still jarring.

I'm re-reading as an audiobook and Harrow also tells Gideon pre-pool scene that if she were truly Ninth, she'd be the best cavalier their house has produced since Nonius. Basically a lot of ego boosting happening
