The french might call a place 'Allemagne' , but Germany ain't the proper name for it either.

Many languages have their own terms of certain places, because that's how language works. Some of them are transliterations to approximate the pronunciation of the place in a different alphabet and with different pronunciation rules. In German the capital is "Kiev" and the coutry is "die Ukraine" because "Ukraine" is female and requires an article, just like "die Türkei" or "die Schweiz". You can only drop the article for nouns that are singular neuter. Similarly in French, it's "la Ukraine" because "Ukraine" is female. This confuses the English monoglots.

On the topic of the stakes of the war to Russians, another report today of a member of the Wagner penal battalion going home after their 6 months service and promptly torching a house with 2 women inside it. Sadly not a new development by any means but this is the first report I have seen since the whole 'There aren't enough cops to handle crimes against citizens' insight earlier this week. God knows what the crime rate against citizens is going to be when all of the police time is devoted to protecting the state from the population and violent criminals are filtering back unreformed into society.

Off topic here but stop posting in UKMT. It's a good self regulating thread and I don't think you're a good fit for it. Or lurk there a bit more and understand it. It's a unique thread that doesn't require strict D&D rules. It is prone to a bit of doomerism now and then and easy to troll but it doesn't need making GBS threads up with contrarian arguements.
