For me it's because DS9's usage of the holodeck feels relatively unpretentious. It's video games and sex and it doesn't pretend to be anything else. VOY and TNG both went out of their way to make holodeck past times feel like some weird combination of sophisticated, quirky, and just downright bizarre and it never really worked for me.

There's no way DS9 gets to put its nose up about holodeck/holosuite stuff when it spent so much time with Vic Fontaine.

I imagine Janeway is just watching everyones holodeck recordings for fun and the crew has learned not to get too explicit with their fantasy AI video game

I feel like DS9 got away very well with telling instead of showing about the holosuites. Like, you hear about Chief's kayaking or Dax and Kira doing Arthurian adventures, and meanwhile they show you one misty cave for Klingon fights and Chief and Julian playing spacesquash in a room full of pluses.

The good holodeck thing DS9 does is avoid artificially upping the stakes by removing safety protocols every single time there's a holodeck episode. The bad holodeck thing DS9 does is indeed Vic Fontaine

Ok, maybe he was a little overused in the end, but I still liked him

Vic, much like Garak, made such a strong impression that it feels like he’s in way more episodes than he’s actually is.

The smoky bar wartime singer gig contrasts well with the war going on outside.

Imho the main problem with the 10 episode wrap up is that way, way too much time is taken up with Ezri sorting through her feelings for Worf and the whole Pah-Wraith stuff that didn't really go anywhere. Did we really need like 3 episodes of Winn and Dukat loving around? I feel like Bajor and its religion needed to be given closure, but man did they drop the ball on that and the anime DBZ fight on the promenade is one of the worst things in DS9

Also I liked Ezri regardless, her actress had big shoes to fill and she did her best with what she got.

Berman should not have fired Terry Farrell, instead he should've reflected on his many sins against the franchise and become an anchorite at a monetary for the rest of his life. IMHO.

Every time he comes up in this thread I think they're talking about one of the guys from Bioshock. IIRC that guy wasn't even real, just elaborate kayfabe puppeted by some other sinister 20s sounding name guy.

Vic Fontaine and Moopsy are both star Trek things I must have had seen, and that I must believe exist, but my mind is suspiciously devoid of personal recollection of either character in show.

Booting the women who have significant roles in the show for wanting to have a career after the show ends is a 90-scifi hallmark.

Controversial opinion: Jadzia was only good as a love interest for Worf, so she should have had better writing have been written out a lot sooner

Farrell Dax had definite range problems, but anytime she was meant to be sarcastic or Klingon she was good. It was bad when she got the standard new boyfriend plot all the female cast members get at some point. Or had to do any dramatic heavy lifting. But as the breezy, gently caress it, old-man-in-a-young-body, she was great.

I've seen 12 year olds at middle school football games give more enthralling pep talks than Dax's wartime mess hall speech.

She was great in Rejoined. I think she could have done good work if she stopped getting her own scripts in S4 whcih didn't revolve around Worf

God I wasn't even trying to speak against Vic Fontaine I just think it's ridiculous to put your nose up at Picard playing Dixon Hill, or the Voyager crew running Fair Haven, as being weird/quaint/twee when the DS9 crew couldn't get enough of a 50s Vegas casino.

I think it is hilarious that Bashir and O'Brien, with the full knowledge of everything Santa Ana could possibly do and centuries more military science and Bashir being a genetic superman still couldn't figure out how to win at the Alamo

They really didn't need to create a new character just to have Wolf get a girlfriend.

Winn was right there the whole time, their names start with the same letter and everything!

Dixon Hill is great because Picard is so serious and likes serious guy stuff like literature and archaeology but he plays a sleazy pulp detective rpg for fun.

Ask me about the shitty opinions I have about Paradox games!
You know, it feels a bit like they forgot about Changelings once the Martok stuff is out of the way.
I wish we'd got a few more lines about security having been perfected or something so that random ships don't suddenly self destruct because changelings replaced their captain/first officer

It was approximately 7000 vs 200, it was a pretty untenable position. They would have had to give Davy Crockett a Davy Crockett to do it.
