Spring 2009 posted:

Hello gentlemen, here be anime

It's that time of the year again and since no one else has expressed any interest in posting a thread, I went over to Moonphase to see what's up. Interesting (highly subjective) things in bold as usual. Please post corrections if you see a mistake.

Spring TV series

03/06: Candy boy episode:06
Continuing shoujo-ai OVA. Webcast.

03/20: Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari Episode 01 (Otherworldly Story of the Seikishi)
Fantasy-ish OVA that is some kind of alternate universe spinoff of Tenchi Muyo, if you remember that.

03/26: Gin'iro no Corda ~second passo~
Special episode of what basically amounts to a shoujo harem show with lots of pretty boys and music. Original show was in 2005.

03/27: Lupin the 3rd VS Detective Conan
Pretty much exactly what it sounds like. OVA that airs on a PPV channel, if I understand it correctly.

03/30: Cooking Idol Ai! Mai! Main!
Kids show about cooking.

03/30: Chi's Sweet Home S2
KITTY!

03/31: Star Wars/The Clone Wars
just take a look at the homepage and you'll pretty much get it. :psyduck:
e: Not_Log says this is a rebroadcast of a western show. The more you know!

03/31: Marie & Gali
Isaac Newton, Galileo Galilei and others teach kids about science with jokes, dance and music. 5 minute episodes.

04/01: Mainichi Kaa-san (Everyday Mom)
Anime adaption of a gag comic strip that runs in one of Japan's largest daily newspapers.

04/01: Charade no Joke na Mainichi (Joke of the Day Charade)
I have no loving clue.

04/01: Sengoku Basara (Devil Kings)
Production I.G. does an anime adaption of the Capcom PS2 game. Directed by that guy who was responsible for masterpieces like Rental Magica and Chrome Shelled Regios. On the other hand, it has Wakamoto Norio as Oda Nobunaga, Paku Romi (Ed in FMA) as Uesugi Kenshin, Nakai Kazuya (Zoro in One Piece) as Date Masamune and Noto Mamiko is also in there somewhere, so it can't be all bad.

04/02: Queens Blade Rurou no Senshi (Queen's Blade - Wandering Warriors)
About as close to porn you can get without quite being there.

04/02: Asura Cryin'
Shounen fantasy thing about some guy who is haunted by the ghost of girl who was his childhood friend. The director was also responsible for Nanoha A's and StrikerS, not sure what that means. Saji Crossroad (Irino Miyu) of Gundam 00 fame as the protagonist; OP and ED by angela.

04/02: Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya)
The "rebroadcast" of Haruhi. Moonphase is listing it (despite usually never listing rebroadcasts), and lists it as airing on 15 different stations, so I'm listing it too. Will it be anything new? :iiam:

04/02: Basquash!
Satelight does a show about basketball-playing mecha; Nike is credited with "shoe design". Kawamori Shoji and some other Macross people are involved somewhere too. I really don't know if I should bold this or not. :psyduck:

04/02: Pandora Hearts
Shounen fantasy show about some spoiled kid who gets spirited away to some other world from which he can only be rescued by the female protagonist who is some kind of magical being. You've seen it before. Directed by the Busou Renkin guy, music by Kajiura Yuki (with an OP by FictionJunction), female protagonist voiced by Kawasumi Ayako. Oh, and Fukuyama Jun is in this too. A busy man, that one.

04/02: K-On!
Kyoto Animation does a moé music show based on a 4-panel manga about some musically inept girls that nevertheless want to rescue their school's music club. Not bolding, kyoani sucks now.

04/02: Phantom ~Requiem of the Phantom~
Detective/mystery/action/girls with big guns series based on the visual novel with the same name. There was an OVA a few years back which everyone agreed was poo poo. The likelihood of this being much better is very low, since it's a Bee Train show directed by that Noir/Madlax/El Cazador guy and thus guaranteed to put you to sleep. Amusingly stars Saji Crossroad and Feldt Grace (Irino Miyu and Takagaki Ayahi respectively) as the two main characters.

04/03: Higepiyo
Anime adaption of a 4-panel manga about an angry chicken.

04/03: Hayate no Gotoku S2 (Hayate the Combat Butler)
Another season of reference jokes, terrible puns and Santa punching. Previous season got really repetitive after a while, hopefully they start to add some of the manga's drama parts in this one.

04/03: Slap Up Party -Arad Senki- (Slap Up Party - Arad War Chronicles)
Gonzo does an anime adaption of some Korean MMORPG. I wouldn't expect anything Druaga-ish out of this one but who knows.

04/04: Gokujou! Mecha Mote Iinchou (The Best! Extremely Cool Student Council President)
Not a mecha show, quite the contrary. Seems to be some kind of sugary sweet shoujo show about doing your best and making friends.

04/04: Shin Mazinger Shougeki! Z-hen (True Mazinger SHOCK! Chapter Z)
No words should be necessary, especially not since it's directed by the man who directed Giant Robo and G Gundam.

04/04: Otenbo Lulu (Tomboy Lulu)
Show based on a comic book from 1956 by fashion designer Yves Saint-Laurent. No other info available.

04/04: Senjou no Valkyria -Gallian Chronicles- (Valkyria Chronicles)
Anime adaption of the PS3 game, which kinda like an alternate reality WW2 thing. Pretty nice voice actor list, female protagonist is voiced by Inoue Marina (Yoko in Gurren-Laggan) and yep, Fukuyama Jun is in this too.

04/04: Shinkyoku Soukai Polyphonica Crimson S
I have no idea why anyone would ever think giving this a second season was a good idea.

04/05: Metal Fight Beyblade
I was hoping this franchise was permanently dead but apparently not.

04/05: Dragonball Kai
Remastered version of DBZ to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the series! The latest HD technology, new versions of the opening and ending themes! Re-recorded audio and re-edited animation! Less episodes! A new voice recording led by Son Goku's voice actor! If you ever wanted to get in on DBZ this is your chance!
(lol)

04/05: Jewel Pets
Sanrio's latest merchandise gimmick.

04/05: Cross Game
Baseball anime based on the manga with the same name (by this guy, who seems to do nothing but write baseball manga). No one will watch this. More people will watch this than anything else on this list, but no one will talk about it in English.

04/05: Hagane no Renkinjutsushi FULL METAL ALCHEMIST
Complete remake of the original series, possibly closer to the manga. Lots of the original staff including voice actors are returning, it seems. Confirmed (?) for 51 episodes.

04/05: Konnichiwa Anne (Before Green Gables)
Delayed from winter season. From that thread: Part of the World Masterpiece Theater series of adaptions of various children's novels. Based on a prequel novel to the famous Anne of Green Gables; the anime is created to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the original Anne novel.

04/05: Hanasakeru Seishounen
Reverse harem show; normal girl gets involved in international big business, gains pretty-boy suitors. Impressive staff/cast list though; the director has both Higurashi and Nodame Cantabile Paris on his CV, the female protagonist is voiced by Endo Aya (Miyuki in Lucky Star, Kinue Crossroad in Gundam 00) and the prettyboys are voiced by people like Fukuyama Jun (Lelouch) and Morikawa Toshiyuki (Sephiroth, Griffith in Berserk).

04/05: Guin Saga
Berserk-ish fantasy show based on a 120+ volumes long and still ongoing novel series about a man with a leopard mask. Music by Final Fantasy superstar Uematsu Nobuo. See the thread.

04/05: Shangri-La
Gonzo (apparently still alive) adapts a sci-fi novel where global warming has turned Tokyo into some kind of tropical forest city. Circles around some girl who leads an anti-government guerilla trying to stop the forestation. Character designs by superstar Murata Range (probably most familiar from Last Exile).

04/05: Tayutama -Kiss on my Deity-
Generic harem show #512262 with the standard issue dumb premise (fox spirit girl promises to marry- gently caress this you know the deal) and standard issue dumb name. Does star Wakamoto Norio, though.

04/05: Natsu no Arashi! (Summer Storm)
SHAFT and our old friend Shinbo does an anime adaption of the School Rumble manga author's other romantic comedy manga. Impressive voice cast (Nonaka Ai (Kafka), Horie Yui (Minorin, Eri in School Rumble, etc etc), Shiraishi Ryouko (Hayate the Combat Butler), Sanpei Yuko (Nakiami in Xam'd)) that for some reason also has Omigawa Chiaki (Maka from Soul Eater) in one role.

04/05: Tears to Tiara
H-game-based (game in question by the guys that did Utawarerumono) mix between shounen fantasy and generic harem. Same director as Utawarerumono, too.

04/05: Saki
darkgray says: "It's kinda like Akagi, but moé and with special attacks. Actually, it's Nanoha meets Akagi." Not sure how it's like Akagi other than the Mahjong part, but whatever. Incomprehensibly good voice cast list including Fukuyama Jun (Lelouch), Koshimizu Ami (Horo from Wolf & Spice), Ueda Kana (Tohsaka Rin in F/SN, Yumi in Marimite), Rie Kugimiya (Taiga in Toradora and all other tsunderes ever) and Itou Shizuka (Rei in Marimite). Doesn't have much else speaking for it though, especially since it's Gonzo.

04/06: 07-Ghost
Boy in a gothic fantasy world goes to military academy, is top student, gets pursued by mighty empire for <reasons>, seeks shelter within a church with some magical "ghosts" protecting him, ends up important to the entire world and <stuff> etc. Seems like a shounen series but isn't; on the contrary it's shoujo and has vaguely gay vibes.

04/06: Sugarbunnies Fleur
More Sanrio merchandise stuff.

04/07: Souten Kouro (Azure Sky Route)
Two oldschool gentlemen with experience from things like Fist of the North Star and Legend of the Galactic Heroes direct a historical drama based on a 36-volume Romance of the Three Kingdoms-based manga that ended in 2005. Should be a very manly show.

04/08: Ristorante Paradiso
Girl is abandoned by her mother and ends up apprentice in a resturant in Rome. Lots of gratitious Italian expected. Gives Antique Bakery vibes and has some kind of gentlemen-with-glasses gimmick. :gay:

04/09: Higashi no Eden (Eden of the East)
Most of the GitS:SAC team plus the Honey & Clover character designer does what seems to be a mystery/action series involving terrorism, memory loss and a cell phone charged with 8.2 billion yen (around 82.5 million USD) in digital cash. Confirmed for 11 episodes, airs in the somewhat famous Noitamina timeslot.

04/11: Hatsukoi Gentei (First Love Limited)
Generic romcom/harem show based on a manga by the woman who did Ichigo 100%.

04/13: Lilo and Stitch the Series
oh disney-tan

May: Fight Ippatsu! Juuden-chan!!
Some kind of gimmicky comedy show where an office lady from an alternate reality tries to cheer people up.

Spring: ROBO CROSSER
Disney does some kind of motorcycle pseudo-anime.

Spring: Bakugan Battle Brawlers: New Vestroia
Some TCG/merchandise selling gimmick show funded by SEGA.

Spring: RAINBOW Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin (RAINBOW: The Seven Boys of Dorm 2, Room 6)
Anime adaption of an ongoing manga set in the 1950's, following the lives of seven boys who get confined together in a room at a school for delinquents, and their lives after they leave.

Spring: Mikuni Engi (Romance of the Three Kingdoms)
I have been completely unable to determine what this is, other than that it's going to be 52 episodes long and is some kind of Chinese-Japanese co-production.

Later stuff

Nothing here is bolded because of lack of information.

July: Bakemonogatari (Monster Tales)
SHAFT and Shinbo's next project. Based on a series of light novels by Nisio Oisin. Review of the novels: http://easternstandard.pbwiki.com/Bakemonogatari

July: Winter Sonata the Animation
Anime adaption of a hugely popular Korean live action drama/soap opera. People who liked Kimi ga Nozomu Eien and poo poo like that are most likely going to love this.

Summer: Canaan
Aka. 428, aka. Typemoon's latest project. Looks very promising; directed by the Sword of the Stranger guy and stars Sakamoto Maaya (Shiki in Kara no Kyoukai) and Sawashiro Miyuki (Shinku in Rozen Maiden) as the two main characters.

Summer: Spice & Wolf II
more moeconomics

Summer: Summer Wars
New movie project by the guys who did Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo. Looking forward to this already.

04/02: K-On!
Kyoto Animation does a moé music show based on a 4-panel manga about some musically inept girls that nevertheless want to rescue their school's music club. Not bolding, kyoani sucks now.

It's amazing how little joy 2009 adtrw took in anime.

For posterity

Spring 2010 posted:

After two rather unremarkable (to say the least) seasons, things now seem to be looking up. The noitaminA timeslot on Fuji TV (known for things like Nodame Cantabile, Honey & Clover, Trapeze and Eden of the East) is now 60 minutes instead of 30, which means two shows per season that are more or less guaranteed to be at least above average. There's also quite a few other interesting things.

As always, the main source for this is Moonphase (moonrune warning). I'll list pretty much everything that Moonphase lists, at least for TV series; for OVA's and movies I usually end up missing a lot of stuff. By all means feel free to post corrections or stuff I missed. DVD release dates for movies are of particular interest; Moonphase lists cinema dates, but those aren't very interesting for most of us, and I'm too lazy to keep track of DVD release dates myself.

As usual I've bolded the safe bets/stuff that everyone should agree is awesome. This season I'm rather conservative with the boldings so feel free to request more boldings if you want. NEW: shows nobody cares about (i.e. kids shows, merchandise gimmick shows) have their names in italics!

For TV series, the listed date is the day the first episode airs in Japan. For reasons related to timezones and Japan's screwy way of counting hours past midnight, this might be +/- 1 day from what you'd expect it to be. For OVA's, it's the DVD release date. For movies, it's the cinema premiere date, unless otherwise noted.

End of tl;dr.

Spring TV series

03/02: Bakugan Battle Brawlers: New Vestroia
merchandise gimmicks

03/16 Yutori-chan
Kids show about small girls doing things with cellphones. Streaming (in some cellphone format) broadcast only.

03/26: Ikkitousen XTREME XECUTOR
more like XTREME TITS amirite

03/26: Hetalia Axis Powers Season 3
The country stereotype/gay innuendo jokes go on forever.

03/27: Shoka (Calligrapher)
Samurai (?) show by Production I.G.'s B-team, about calligraphers fighting with giant paper creatures. The script/idea apparently won some Animax award.

03/29: Hanakappa
NHK kids show about a kappa. If you don't know what a kappa is, turn in your wapanese badge and gun.

04/01: Shin Koihime Musou ~Otome Dairan~
idk why they keep making more and more of this poo poo

04/01: HEROMAN
BONES and Stan Lee of Spider-Man and X-Men fame cooperate on some giant robot show.
**** Thread ****

04/01: B Gata H Kei (B-Cup Perv)
Some ero comedy show about a girl who dreams of having 100 casual sex partners. The internet claims the main reason to watch this is that it has Tamura Yukari (who voices the protagonist) acting like a complete slut. Also stars Noto Mamiko, Horie Yui and Kobayashi Yuu.

04/01: Ookiku Furikabutte Second Season (Big Windup Season 2)
Baseball is serious business.

04/01: Kaichou wa Maid-sama! (The Chairwoman Serves Me Tea!)
J.C. Staff adapts a shoujo romance manga (official English title: Maid Sama!) about a hardworking female student council president who secretly works part-time at a maid café. Drama ensues when some heartbreaker guy discovers her secret. Fujimura Ayumi (Azaka in Kara no Kyoukai) as the maid/chairwoman. Also stars Hanazawa Kana, Ueda Kana and Kobayashi Yuu.
**** Thread ****

04/02: Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou (The Last Devil King of the Line)
Shounen fanservice/harem/fighting show about some guy in a fantasy world who gets "devil king" as his most suitable occupation on some aptitude test. Airs on AT-X which should tell you something about the content (translation: tits). Directed by the Shakugan no Shana guy, and Itou Shizuka is in there somewhere.

04/02: Angel Beats!
P.A. Works (Canaan), Key (the game developers responsible for the Clannad and Kanon visual novels, among other things) and the director of Seto no Hanayome and Tentai Senshi Sunred do an anime original story about moé angel girls with guns fighting each other in the afterlife, while also being in afterlife high school. Since it's Key it's probably intended to be melodramatic as gently caress, but the entire thing is so ridicolously exaggerated that it sounds like a perfect recipe for (unintentional?) hilarity. Maybe it's all just some kind of elaborate troll or social experiment where they try to prove that they can get otaku to cry about absolutely anything, no matter how ridicolous. Hanazawa Kana and Kitamura Eri as two of the angels; Kamiya Hiroshi (he sure gets around these days) as some dude.
**** Thread ****

04/02: Ring ni Kakero 1 Shadow-hen (Put it all in the Ring 1: Shadow)
Toei does more anime about boxing.

04/03: Jewel Pet New Series
more merchandise gimmicks

04/03: SD Gundam Sangoku-den (SD Gundam: Legends from the Three Kingdoms)
Super deformed Gundams go around and make funnies. Originally a movie, reported to get a TV anime as well.
**** Thread ****

04/03: MAJOR 6th Series
Yes, even more baseball.

04/03: Hakuouki: Shinsengumi Kitan (Demons Among the Pale Cherry Blossoms: A Mysterious Tale of the Shinsengumi)
Studio DEEN and this guy do a harem show about some girl who gets the attention of a bunch of Shinsengumi pretty-boy samurai. Based on a PS2 visual novel and airs on AT-X, which would usually imply a lot of fanservice if the harem was female, idk what it means in this case.

04/04: Hime Chen! Otogi Chikku Idol Lilpri
still more merchandise gimmicks

04/04: Sangoku Engi (Romance of the Three Kingdoms)
Chinese-Japanese coproduction. 52 episodes. Reportedly very little blood and violence but appears to be a rather faithful retelling of the story.

04/04: GIANT KILLING
In our continuing series of shows with highly misleading names, this season features GIANT KILLING which is an anime about soccer. It's done by Studio DEEN and directed by a guy whose main achievements as a director are Zero no Tsukaima S2 and S3, so it's probably safe to say it's going to suck. The manga is absurdly popular though so there's probably going to be some raging, at least in japanese.
**ZORAK EDIT: Surprise, it actually rules!!!**
**** Thread ****

04/04: Working!!
Anime adaption of a 4-panel comedy manga about some high school girl working part-time in a restaurant and her quirky co-workers. Lots of voice talent including Fukuyama Jun (Lelouch) as the male lead, Asumi Kana (Yuno in Hidamari Sketch) as the female lead, Ono Daisuke (Itsuki in Haruhi, Hosaka in Minami-ke), Kamiya Hiroshi (Zetsubou-sensei, Araragi in Bakemonogatari) and Shiraishi Ryouko (Hayate the Combat Butler, Schrödinger in Hellsing Ultimate).

04/04: Arakawa Under The Bridge
SHAFT, our old friend Shinbo and relative newcomer Miyamoto Yukihiro adapts a quirky romance manga about an upper class guy who gets stuck with some weirdo girl living under a bridge. Impressive voice cast as usual with SHAFT shows; it stars Kamiya Hiroshi (Araragi in Bakemonogatari, Zetsubou-sensei, etc) as the rich dude, Sakamoto Maaya as the weirdo girl, and furthermore Saitou Chiwa (Senjougahara in Bakemonogatari and a billion other roles), Fujiwara Keiji (Holland in E7, Hughes in FMA), Sawashiro Miyuki (Shinku in Rozen Maiden, Canaan in Canaan) and Sugita Tomokazu (Kyon). It'll be interesting to see what SHAFT makes of this now that they (maybe) have infinite money.
**** Thread ****

04/05: kiss x sis
apparently this was popular enough to get an entire tv series (on at-x, of course)
just say no, ok

04/05: Senkou no Night Raid (Flashing Night Raid)
Since Japan has realized that people abroad actually seem to like anime, they've started some kind of project called ANIME NO CHIKARA (the POWER OF ANIME or whatever) which is supposed to result in stuff people outside Japan want to watch. So far this has resulted in K-On S1.5 (aka. Sora no Woto). Next up is this one, done by the same studio (A-1 Studios, mostly known for shitstuff like Valkyria Chronicles and Kannagi) and directed by this guy, who is mostly known for Persona -trinity soul-. The actual show is about some secret agency doing <stuff> in Shanghai in 1931.
tl;dr: outlook not good

04/06: Mayoi Neko Overrun! (Stray Cat Overrun)
Harem/fanservice/sudden girlfriend appearance show based on a series of light novels. Stars Horie Yui (everything) and Tamura Yukari (Nanoha, Mai in Kanon, etc). Nothing interesting to see here, move along.

04/06: RAINBOW Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin (RAINBOW: The Seven Boys of Dorm 2, Room 6)
Anime adaption of an ongoing manga set in the 1950's, following the lives of seven boys who get confined together in a room at a school for delinquents, and their lives after they leave. Delayed since spring 2009 or something.
**** Thread ****

04/11: Uragiri wa Boku no Namae wo Shitteiru (Betrayal Knows My Name)
J.C. Staff adapts a manga about angsty pretty-boys staring at each other in the dark while cherry blossoms rain around them and the gay innuendo is so thick you could practically walk on it. Lots of male superstar voice actors, as expected. Hoshi Souichirou (Jesus Yamato in Gundam SEED, Gino in Geass R2) and Sakurai Takahiro (Oshino in Bakemonogatari, Suzaku in Code Geass, etc) as the main characters; further talent include Ono Daisuke (Hosaka in Minami-ke), Ishida Akira (Athrun in Gundam SEED, Xellos in Slayers), Fukuyama Jun (Lelouch), Inoue Marina (Kana in Minami-ke, Kyoko in Skip Beat), Miki Shinichirou (Kurz in FMP, Mustang in FMA:B) and Yukana (C.C. in Code Geass).
**** Thread ****

04/15: Sarai-ya Goyou (House of Five Leaves)
Manglobe and this Studio Ghibli veteran adapt a manga about a naïve samurai (voiced by Namikawa Daisuke, who did Rock in Black Lagoon etc) who gets stuck in bad but charismatic company (voiced by Sakurai Takahiro, who was Suzaku in Code Geass). Oh, and it airs in the noitaminA timeslot, which makes this show have like three or four separate things about it that each would have made it a bold entry by itself, so yeah imagine this show's entry being in 36pt blinking red text or something.
**** Thread ****

04/22: Yojou-han Shinwa Taikei (Tales from the Four-and-a-Half Tatami Room)
Madhouse and avant-garde director Yuasa Masaaki (Kaiba, Mind Game, Kemonozume) adapt a 2005 novel about a nameless university student who looks back on his life. Part of the name of the show (more specificaly yo in yojou-han) is an elaborate graphic kanji pun. Stars Sakamoto Maaya (Shiki in Kara no Kyoukai etc etc) and Fujiwara Keiji (Ladd Russo in Baccano, Holland in E7, Hughes in FMA); also airs in the noitaminA timeslot (yes, it's two shows per season now). Like The House of Five Leaves you should imagine this show's entry being in 36pt blinking red text.

Spring OVA's and Movies

Remember that the movie dates are cinema premieres unless otherwise stated.

Anime adaption of a 4-panel gag manga about a bunch of Japanese warring states-era warlords (i.e. Takeda Shingen, Uesugi Kenshin, Akechi Mitsuhide and the other usual suspects). Absurd amount of voice talent including fangirl favorite and J-rock superstar Gackt, Noto Mamiko, Ono Daisuke, Sugita Tomokazu and Kobayashi Yuu.

03/26 Soukou Kihei Votoms Genei-hen I (Armored Trooper Votoms - Phantom Arc, part I)
If there's anyone who cares about this, they're probably posting here. Unfortunately, nobody will sub it.

Sunrise and this guy adapt a postapocalyptic manga about some girl who cryo-sleeps through a pandemic that wipes out most of humanity. The entire manga is out in the US already. Hanazawa Kana as the protagonist (she is in everything now); also stars Kawasumi Ayako.

05/01: Gekijouban Bungaku Shoujo (Literature Girl - The Movie)
Adaption (by Production I.G.) of a light novel that revolves around a demon/weird creature in teenage girl form who eats stories, and her male classmate who writes stuff for her to eat. Irino Miyu as the classmate, Hanazawa Kana as the demon girl (what did I say about her being in everything now). Also stars Mizuki Nana, Itou Shizuka, Ono Daisuke etc etc.

Sometime 2010: CAT poo poo ONE -THE ANIMATED SERIES-
Cats with guns, unironically. Who knows if it will ever actually come out.

Sometime 2010: Hellsing Ultimate VIII

10/03 Kill la Kill
Studio TRIGGER's first TV anime. The story is about two badass school girls with swords on a campus ruled by the blade. The campus? Also a sword. Hiroyuki Imaishi (Dead Leaves, FLCL, Gurren-Lagann, Panty and Stocking, Inferno Cop) is directing. This is the safest bet ever in terms of being totally amazing. TRIGGER, for those not familiar with them, is essentially all of the good Gainax staff that jumped ship a couple years back in order to do their own things, and have since produced some really stellar one-offs and shorts (Little Witch Academia, Inferno Cop, Turning Girls, the Little Witch Academia 2 kickstarter, and Inferno Cop).

The amazing thing about the Moe panic was even during peak chasing K-on it never really hit levels like we saw with shows chasing Eva or Gundam or what we would see with shows chasing SAO. Just crazy paranoia cause some people hated shows with girls as leads

Zorak did spring 2012-spring 2015 which is when most of us modern regulars were starting out in ADTRW.
Lucy Heartfilia did summer 2015-spring 2017
Julias took over summer 2017 and never stopped, what a sexy legend

It was long, long before official english sub streaming services, where your exposure to anime would've been more likely mediated by television. It's also why currently the most discussed manga on the internet are on mangaplus rather than mangadex or the like
