Nirvanna the Band is loving great, thanks people for bringing it up.

Going to watch this whole show when there's more episodes out to not give Showtime money, but I've already seen two scenes: Nathan sexually grunting against Emma Stone's leg and Nathan full frontal pissing. Little fear that those are there for shock both him ACTING and of him DOING FULL FRONTAL PISSING. Has built up enough trust from his other weird projects that I've got faith the bits around those scenes gives them validity beyond that.

Watched the first episode yesterday and I can’t stop thinking about it. There’s an under current of foreboding and it’s great. Hopefully its consistent all the way through.

Really loved this, it's one of the few non-Lynch things to correctly pull off a Lynchian vibe - it feels like sort of a halfway step between Twin Peaks: The Return and Mulholland Drive. The constant tension and eeriness from SOMETHING just looming beneath normality, the feeling that things can just escalate any second, the bizarre characters who feel like they are living entire lives off-screen.

Really hope it goes off the deep end. Right now I'm just anticipating something going horribly awry with that stupid loving mirror house - someone is absolutely going to drive a car into that thing before it's over.

Agreed with the above vibe of the show. On the surface it's a show about two pretty lovely people trying to prove themselves to be "good" people in a very cringe tone-deaf and performative way and you can see their reputations are quickly going to unravel.

But that's probably not what the show is actually about. There's something else and I can't quite explain what it is yet, but I'm interested to find out.

Occam's razor my man. He's a brilliant writer/performer who probably has social anxiety that he learned to lean into for his shows because it makes for a better story.

I don't think he's gone full Jim Carrey. There's a doc on him from 'Man on the Moon' era that really gives you the sense that Carrey very consciously sculpted his 90's comedy persona to the point that he's not sure where "who he used to be" starts and "what he decided to be" ends. It's like a high person how much of their persona is self-actualized vs. who they've always been. & at least from that documentary you get a sense Carrey is a bit lost between that in a bad way. Like a method actor who's spent so long in character that they don't really remember who they originally were.

I assume Fielder is a bit more "normal" than the shows suggest, simply because:

1. While he's doing fun psychological poo poo nowadays, you don't hear gossip/news about him outside of the show, and
2. He shows up in enough stuff that people clearly like working with and for him.

Tommy Wiseau made a wild thing, but you can tell he's actually crazy/an rear end because he did a couple things with people in the LA comedy scene and then never again.

From what I understand Nathan is actually very charismatic IRL. I remember one quote that described how popular he was with the ladies in school.

There’s a radio show I listen to that he calls in to once in a while and he’s never in character. He’s pretty much just a normal dude with a dry sense of humor. I’m sure his character is based off his own personality to some extent, but for the most part I think he’s just very committed to the bit.

That was always my read, pretty typical for actors playing a version of themselves. Exaggerate and play up some qualities, downplay the ones that make you seem average.

The funniest Nathan Fielder thing, to me, is how Elon Musk idolizes him and has invited him to multiple parties and keeps trying to tell jokes and impress him and Nathan Fielder (rightfully) believes Elon Musk loving sucks and is lame as hell.

This makes me like Nathan more, but also makes me embarrassed to like something Elon does.

To be fair Elon is more enamoured with the idea of people giving someone/himself unearned credit and praise for terrible business ideas than anything.

quote:

Mr. Musk has, in particular, pursued a friendship with one comedian whose public image revolves around the outrageous steps he takes to relate to other people: Nathan Fielder, who first became famous for his Comedy Central show “Nathan For You,” which turned a series of preposterous business ideas, including excrement-flavored frozen yogurt and athletic apparel dedicated to raising Holocaust awareness, into the definitive parody of modern American entrepreneurship.

Mr. Musk — a huge fan — invited Mr. Fielder to lunch at SpaceX in 2016.

For years afterward, the famous businessman invited the famous fake businessman to his parties and would strain to make the deadpan Canadian laugh.

Mr. Musk set up a similar meet-and-greet with Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, the creators of the animated comedy series “Rick and Morty”; he voiced an alternate version of himself, named Elon Tusk, in the show’s fourth season.

Really fascinated by these characters. That entire scene with Dougie actually pulling over when he fails the breathalyzer is so interesting.

I'm having trouble thinking of other TV that really hits this vibe? I can think of some film stuff but it honestly is scratching a similar itch to Twin Peaks for me. There is that same interplay between a facade, and emotional undercurrents and trauma going on.

I agree there. Its like he knows he's a bit of a dirtbag, but he's clearly becoming a bit more self aware and disappointed in himself about it and is attempting to hold himself to a slightly higher standard, but its new to him and not coming very easy. There's a lot communicated just from that scene. Benny Safdie is great in this, I haven't seen him act before.

The only thing I can think of that’s even remotely in the same wheelhouse is White Lotus, but even that is very different. It’s the closest comparison I can come up with though.

Nathan might not be a fantastic dramatic actor but it works fine for this show since a lot of his scenes are of his character trying and failing to act like a normal person. Which he is very good at. But also Emma Stone is just really good, so of course he doesn’t measure up to her.

Dougie’s such a sad character. I really liked his prolonged stare and tiny head shake at the casino.

I think he is really good in this, honestly. Asher was always going to be read as artificial because, well the character is that, and it does play to Nathan's strengths. But I think hes done a good job of displaying that character's anger and entitlement under that plastic facade pretty well.

But yeah its freaking Emma Stone lol. Her face when she was inserting herself into Cara's group was incredible. Saying this show is beneath her is silly because who else is going to bring this amount of finesse to that character.

who is doing the music, is it the same folks as uncut gems? incredible ability to introduce a mood and sound rad at the same time

Oh drat I think I had this conversation after seeing uncut gems at the theatre and didn't follow-up to cement the connection, plus we both couldn't remember the name just describing the couple of music videos we'd seen. Gonna slide em into my music algorithms.

Great episode, and honestly I can totally see a nesting nathan for me throughline of this.

The Mission: Don't make my wife and our ostensibly charitable business endeavors a public disaster after the presumed negative attention following my aggressive, off-putting, responses during a local news interview we arranged to nakedly function as soft promotion for our business and personal reputation.

The Plan: Approach the journalist who filmed my embarrassing behaviour and offer to trade the footage and story for a juicier story that would be of more worth to the journalist.

_The Mission: Use social engineering on my previous connections and relationships as a worker in the casino to obtain a copy of incriminating footage.

_The Plan: Pitch a casino daycare to allow gamblers to spend more time in the casino to my former boss, so I can awkwardly find a pained excuse to gain access to my former coworker's computer using a cleverly placed open container of gatorade and a funny internet video.

Saw on Nathan Instagram there were noted similarities between a trailer for Anyone But You and some promo for The Curse. Apparently they made this promo 6 months ago and thinks Sony Marketing might've seen it and copied it, but isn't pursuing legal action and has booked tickets to the screening of Anyone But You to support the folks working on that.
