Sometimes the scenes cut for time from a movie help explain odd things about said movie. The deleted scenes from Castle of Fu Manchu only make the film more confusing. There's a five minute sequence of Fu Manchu's minions carrying two coffins off a boat and then on a pointless trek around the Asian side of Istanbul before they're put on another boat for the final journey to the titular castle. It's a stunningly pointless scene even for a film that's almost entirely pointless scenes. Seriously, the most interesting part of Castle of Fu Manchu is the castle used as a location. And most of the castle scenes aren't even filmed there but in a garden park in Barcelona.

Yeah, the Rifftrax version is a better print and (I'm guessing mostly) uncut. Doesn't make a whole lot of narrative sense either. I think Castle was the last of the five Christopher Lee Fu Manchu films.

Selecting scenes to cut for the MST3K version must have been an absolute nightmare task because how do you choose what's filler and what's crucial?

It's was funny at least that when they remastered it for DVD they had an interview with some of the original crew, and Cristopher Lee was there and after fielding some excited recollection and questioning from the director he basically could only offer in reply a (paraphrased) "I don't really remember doing this at all, it was just a paycheck."

I'm putting this on now. I love all the 1950s juvenile delinquent panic movies.

I watched Teenage Strangler yesterday and it's great because it's totally one of those movies, but it was made in 1964 so it's in color instead of black and white.

It's also very much a movie where the women characters only exist to get strangled throughout the movie, which is glaring and horrific from a 2023 critical lens.

I've had MST3K on shuffle this week while I work, and today Avalanche came on. It's one of my favourite episodes of the new seasons, but it immediately struck me how much quicker the pace is. It feels like they wanted to cram in two riffs for every one that would've been in the old episodes.

It's not terrible, but it is definitely noticeable.

zoux

In that first new season the pace of jokes is insanely fast, just right on top of each other. I think it gets a lot better in the Gauntlet seasons.

Speaking of that season, god I hate Starcrash, it's so loving Italian. All the crotch pieces, everything looks like it was designed by Milo Manara. And the plot is like when you have a fake fight with a five year old, they keep pulling out these heretofore unmentioned powers and plot points and things, it's just so disrespectful to the concept of sci fi space opera movies. It's like the guy who made it watched Star Wars, completely didn't get any of it, and just copied some stuff he liked poorly. The sfx look like trash, the script reads like a badly localized video game translation ("Imperial starship...stop the flow of time!") and the plot just jumps from scene to scene in a way that cannot be followed. The poo poo they make Christopher Plummer say man...

That's the Italian movie industry from the 1950s through to the 1980s in a nutshell!

Fun fact: back in those days, Italy had something like 2 or 3 (state-run, IIRC) TV channels, and something like 15,000 movie theaters. That's why whenever a movie was a hit over there, the Italian studios would just absolutely crank out ripoffs and pump them into the movie theaters, often with the violence and sex amped up.

In terms of Italian movie trends, they tended to follow a particular cycle: starting off with films that were actually fairly serious adaptations in terms of tone and dialogue, moving on into further explorations of a particular genre (in some cases creating films that were actually good to great), and then devolving into outright comedic parody as the trends began to lose popularity and other movies started getting more popular. Throughout all of this, the budgets were usually nonexistent unless other countries (the UK, Germany, etc. ) helped foot part of the bill. If the budgets were big enough, they could bring in (relatively) popular stars from outside Italy; there's a reason why you see American and British actors like John Saxon, Donald Pleasance, Christopher Lee, Telly Savalas, and many others making appearances in numerous low-budget Italian knockoff films.

Sword and sandal movies, Westerns, spy movies, gritty urban crime dramas, slasher films, devil/demonic possession movies, superhero films, post-apocalypse road warrior movies, sci-fi films, zombie apocalypse movies...all of them had numerous Italian versions cranked out to fill Italian movie theaters at various times.

For more info, I refer you to the excellent 2012 documentary Eurocrime! The Italian Cop and Gangster Films That Ruled the '70s. While it's mainly focused on the Italian poliziotteschi films that cropped up in the wake of Death Wish and Dirty Harry (which were also somewhat reflective of the national mood at the time, in terms of the national crime rate and acts of political terrorism that often plagued Italy during the 1970s), it does give some fairly valuable insight into how the Italian movie industry was in general back in those days.
