there was this show that aired last year that is very different from the Curse, but I think it had some of the same reactions and has some similarities. I thought it was fantastic, but it was very slow moving and people were just expecting a big twist every week, but the show was really more about the characters more than anything. It would have been best to binge it cause people started to get frustrated with the pace watching it weekly.

No way I'd binge this. One hour a week of this kind of discomfort is just fine.

I think they might introduce a real supernatural element at this point.

I think this is perhaps my favourite show that I cannot recommend to anyone I know. I might be one of the few people who are enjoying this more with each episode, but I can definitely see why it would not be everyone’s cup of tea.

i just wish the episodes were a little shorter, it feels like things get stagnant for a few minutes per episode trying to hit the hour long~ runtime. like 39 to 50 minutes instead of 49 to 60 would be cool

caught up on eps 3 and 4 tonight. I really love everything this show is bringing. pre-netflix black mirror energy at times. I appreciate the length of the episodes because the show takes its time to build tension, but also seemingly slow and understated scenes like asher checking expiry dates on donations from a cupboard stocked with terra chips and kind bars and delivering them in a reusable bag to a house laden with mini-sprites, twizzlers, and kraft dinner serve as complementary notes to the knucklebitingly artful cringe of scenes like the sweater and the corporate comedy class. not a wasted second imo.

still don’t have much of a read on dougie. he’s behaving irresponsibly, responsibly? doing poo poo like walking his date the rest of the way after blowing over and taking teen’s keys while buying them booze? surface read is that alcoholism is his curse but he, like asher and whitney, seems to require frequent validation that he’s a righteous person (demanding to be thanked by the teen, apologizing to asher for bullying him).

also, why’d he leave the pool as the black kid entered the water? are the producers using their skills to make him racist?

glad he got his domino’s and local cola though :unsmith:

I brought up black mirror earlier but this show serves as skewed reflection to the white progressive capitalist mindset more adroitly than the aforementioned ever did. lots of examples both blatant and subtle but whitney walking up to the temple and observing from the outside a sutra sung mostly by a crowd of white faces, ‘take the high road’ hung in neon cursive overhead… incredible, speaking karmically.

who has the right to espanola, both its human-made sprawl and its abundant natural beauty? is it the indigenous people who now happily avail of both the gambling addictions and the guilt of the populace? is it the primarily lower-middle-class spanish-speaking majority population of the city? is it gentrifying forces like asher and whitney, whose right to the land is backed by generational wealth, the government, and its institutions (reminded of the police officer speaking to asher about being able to ‘deal with it’ on the same day, as if who was being ‘dealt with’ wasn’t in the same room)? or is it people like afshar’s family from minnesota? I hold a small hope that the show’s answer isn’t extremely bleak but whereever this goes I’m strapped in all the way.

one more dougie thought: he started the episode by digging up a fragment of pottery and ended the episode storming off in pendleton aboriginal-print realness. this show deserves its own thread

I came here to say this. There's a lot of good stuff in this show but I really feel like the pace could be compacted just a little. I do hope it amounts to something a little more than its shown, Nathan usually does this, but if it doesn't I can feel it kind of fizzling out if it continues at the rate its going.

He bought some kids alcohol and also proceeded to drink absurd amounts himself. He also came up with a completely absurd plan to hide all their keys to make sure no one would drive drunk, and required they agree to it before he'd let them drink. It was all basically answered when he meets the kid, we see Dougie remembering what happened while he tries to justify himself to the mom.

The kid probably got an Uber home or something

Yeah he got really lucky that first time. The way he couldn't stop himself blabbing about being a producer or whatever doesnt bode well. First mom could still end up throwing it in his face if he was ever going to be a notable named producer, and second kid will have had a heads up to prep. His threats are laughable because he, even in his depression with "nothing to lose", faces greater magnitude of consequences than 2 children of wealthy people. Only thing he has going for is being such an obvious low-down, manipulative, aggressive scumbag means pursuing legal action might make for a messier affair than most people want to get into, even when they have the upper hand.

Classic poison gambit, you go high, he goes low. You go low, he goes lower.

Starting to wonder if Dougie actually orchestrated the whole curse situation because he's desperate to spice up the show and, as we're seeing, he also may be literally insane

or were people finding this kinda obvious >_>

e: I guess he'd have to have actually coached Nala about the specific curse for that to work since he wouldn't have known otherwise, which would make it maybe a little too ridiculous. just very curious about the trajectory of Dougie's spiral here

Yeah I've been thinking this myself, but a friend just read it as Dougie being a magical thinker who blames his behaviour on outside nonsense.

But nah, he's absolutely, at least, geeing Asher up so that he gets more paranoid and erratic and therefore makes good tv.

For someone so paranoid about curses, he sure is doing everything he can to become the dude who gets cursed again by the exact same child.

Did I miss it or did they not touch on any of the news-casino snitching trade? I wonder why Asher didn't ensure they delete the footage of him being an rear end in a top hat and getting cursed considering how pitbullish he was with the journalist.

A while ago I mentioned there’s a radio show that Nathan is on sometimes and he’s never really doing a character when he’s on it when people were speculating what he’s “really” like.

He and Benny Sadie are on the most recent episode with a good long interview for those interested, it’s called The Best Show with Tom scharpling. It’s a fun interview and you’ll get a better idea of him when he’s not doing a bit.

ive seen some press with nathan that starts off with him not doing a bit and he will eventually find something to do a bit about and then derail the interview into that bit.

Heard that last scene described as a jumpcringe and it's just such a perfect word. This show is so hard to watch and I love it.

The sheer tension makes me expect something terrible to happen in every scene, eg. the jumper scene I was expecting Whitney to fall back and crack her head, but much like Hereditary there's just no release of the tension (so far at least).

May have been mentioned before but I really love how nearly every shot is like from someone snooping with a camera. Through windows, through the peephole, around the corner from something. Even the shot of Dougie swimming was partly obscured by a chair or something at the pool. Really adds to the tension. Even if no twist comes I've enjoyed all the horrible vibes

The comedy scene was incredible. There's something poignant about those stories about Elon Musk trying to make Nathan laugh at parties because what Asher did in that scene feels exactly like what Elon would do in the same situation.

ASK ME ABOUT MY OPINIONS ON CANCEL CULTURE
my only complaint that isn't even a complaint at all because i kind of love it is that yeah dougie is WILDLY inconsistent. is he a drunk driving fart jokes your mom is fat slob? or is he a buff cassanova with a heart of gold.

i guess he really loved emma stone and knew the baby was his and when that didn't happen he understandably cried about it and felt quite sad.

but he also said something like: i'm nothing when i'm not working which seems to be true both for him and some alcoholics. if they get a big contract or are working lots of hours they are doing great but when that final paycheck comes in and their hands are idle things can get bad quickly.

also: who was looking through the peephole?

also: did anybody else think dougie was going to hang himself in the bathroom when he took down that pullup bar?

Yeah those are two different characters. The alcoholic is Dougie and the buff casanova is Nathan Fielder.

gurragadon
Jul 28, 2006

I think that Avian was implying that Whitney had an affair with Dougie at some point that hasn't been shown or talked about on screen yet. There's the scene in the first episode where Dougie comforts and encourages Whitney doing voice overs that could imply there are stronger feelings, at least that Dougie has towards Whitney.

Theres also the small penis thing that could imply that Whitney is not sexually satisfied with Asher in there relastionship and is cheating, though it hasn't been said.

The problem I've had with the show is it seems like they are opening up a ton of plots and not really going anywhere with any of them. It's only the first 4 episodes so I'm assuming they are going to stop adding new stories and start resolving some. What happened with the casino thing?
