Did people really get offended at the horse riding company NFY thing? I mean, it’s a loving insane and ridiculous premise, but I don’t think it was in any way mean or fatphobic or anything lol.

Did it look to anyone else like Cara didn't actually sign the art release form? There's admittedly a brief cut away from her after she signs the consulting contract, but when it cuts back the papers seem to still be in the same position, with the art release on the bottom of the stack. Might be overreading, but I'm wondering if Whitney has a surprise in her future when she actually gets around to opening up the envelope.

Rollos posted:I caught that too. After rewatching the scene though I actually thought Whitney might've switched the contracts so Cara actually did end up signing the art release form instead. I thought it was odd how quickly Whitney wanted to play horse but if she wanted Cara to not notice it was the wrong contract it makes sense. Rewatching it, Whitney does swap the order of the contracts when she pulls them from the envelope. I guess we don't know which was originally which but it does suggest she was possibly playing some sort of game there, particularly when combined with her immediately flipping past the first page to prevent Cara from reading it and the distraction of talking about basketball. Now I'm wondering if there's something shady like a term in the contract allowing them to use Cara's art in all the show homes, which was something she had objected to even more strenuously than her art being in Whitney and Asher's house on the show. With this show hard to predict whether it's Whitney pulling one over on Cara or the other way around, with how awful everyone is.

The woman that walked into the room while Cara and Whitney were talking was her roommate I think, and the interaction was tense. I assume it's them fighting or accusing each other of stealing food and Cara locking it up because of that. I liked the scene where Asher looked all distorted and monstrous while getting makeup put on to call back to the comedy class scene talking about Rodney Dangerfield. He definitely did not have a good episode. gurragadon fucked around with this message at 21:35 on Dec 22, 2023 |

I interpreted the interaction between them as more intimate rather than tense, like they were together not just roommates. I had a roommate in college who claimed the freezer and put a bike lock + padlock on it Day 1, basically told everyone to gently caress off about it and was constantly stashing nonfood items in there. I never understood it. unrelated but he was also a loving nutcase

Whitney dropping the "I'm having trouble with my marriage" thing to Cara more or less exactly how Asher deployed the news of her pregnancy to manipulate his friend at the casino is a solid tipoff that they're paired pretty well. What a brutal episode for Asher though. Awful as he is I sort of hope he can take at least one of these other fucks down with him. I was a big fan of Dean Cain's character being the only one who genuinely wanted to live in a passive home and was fully supportive of the natives, but because he's just got an average American's idiosyncratic and ideologically tone-deaf grabbag of political takes, Whitney would far prefer to keep on casting and stage-managing her pretend clientele.

Did anyone else think the whole comedy class scene had real "hidden camera show" vibes to it? I really got the feeling that apart from Nathan and the teacher the rest of the class weren't in on the script and we were watching people's genuine reactions to their class time being taken up by workshopping a "masturbation joke". The show has had me questioning a lot how much the cast are in on it, but this scene is the one that's really got me wondering if the extras know the script or even if they're being filmed sometimes.

Yes my personal feeling is that decent amount of stuff on the show is done hidden camera style. Although the one thing that makes me question it with that scene is the woman says she paid for the class which would be a weird way to get people in the door for something like that. I did have the same thought though. It’s really hard to tell with this show lol

There's a weird element in the show where Whit and Ash are obviously actually terrible but there's something even more sinister going on. Like, I'm starting to suspect Abshir will actually feel incredible after his chiropractic treatment, because the show wants us to cringe for reasons much deeper than the obvious ones. God Hole posted:comedy class dude absolutely set up an impromptu "self-deprecation" lesson after Asher approached him with his penis issue It could have been intimate, I didn't think along those lines because of the plot about Cara and Dougie flirting. I find myself more and more sympathetic to Dougie as the show goes on. He seems like he wants to have a real friendship with Cara and Asher, but they keep rejecting him and he's lonely. I think him getting mad about not being invited to dinner in the latest episode is the third time that has happened. He did something bad to Asher back in the day that Asher says he forgives him for but I don't think he fully does.

dougie is the least genuine least sympathetic person in the show to me I see no indication in anything he's actually done so far that shows he's legitimately sorry for whatever he said/did to asher or that any of his motivations extend beyond fulfilling his own wants. and he is actively continuously scheming to push Asher out of the show. he seems like he resents Asher and thinks he shouldn't have what he has.

Dougie sucks. There's nothing he does that's not serving what he wants. Like everyone else though he's incapable of self-reflection. Well, they're all capable of self-reflection, but they're haunted by it because of the grotesquery it reveals, a la Asher's warped image in the mirror this episode. The recurring pattern is that they build up illusions and then have those illusions threaten to shatter by self-knowledge. The pain of self-knowledge is the curse that the show is about. That's why there's mirrors everywhere. I expect to see some broken by series end. Dougie does think about whether what he's doing is right: that's why he gets out of the car when he learns he's over the limit. As his date says, a lot of people wouldn't even do that. But he turns away from fuller self-knowledge because it would tell him that he needs to stop drinking. Deep down, Asher knows that he was laughing at the gambling addict. He lies to Whitney about it. He lies to himself about it. But the illusion keeps breaking and he gets glimpses of who he truly is and he hates it. And that theme of the illusion being broken is why we have stuff like this: discoukulele posted:The crew member knocking on the window to tell the birthday party kids to get out of the shot while Whitney is loading up the mini golf statue really trips me out. cara having a roommate in her rental house that she passive-aggressively bristles against for use of the communal space and has padlocked the freezer to safeguard from is economy in storytelling as to why she’s so receptive to whitney’s advances in this episode. she needs the money, which she’s loathe to accept or be associated with because of whitney’s parents’ reputation for exploiting the poor. which makes it hilarious when she gets paid with an envelope of cash that went almost straight from paul’s hands to hers, that she doesn’t ask questions about (because whitney “doesn’t even really see her parents any more”, of course), nor does she bother to read the fine print on the two contracts whitney shoves in front of her, because whoa, $20k. money isn’t really real to whitney so as far as she’s concerned that’s a bargain for cara’s cultural cachet and her fake friendship, but for cara that’s life-changing money inasmuch as it’ll readily cover a year’s worth of rent on a place of her own, and for that she’s willing to compromise her sense of social justice and HOR herself out e: Tea Bone posted:Did anyone else think the whole comedy class scene had real "hidden camera show" vibes to it? it’s definitely scripted (I think the magnificent slow pan around the nonverbal comedy circle proved that) but the corporate comedy teacher definitely pulled from the fielder playbook of seemingly gormlessly manifesting an awkward and humiliating social scenario for someone else panko fucked around with this message at 08:17 on Dec 25, 2023 |

We can only speculate, but I think the level of scripting going on in the show might depend on your definition of scripted. While it's not a prank show or anything, I feel like a lot of people on the show have been prompted in some way vs strictly following a script. I suspect a lot of Nathan For You tactics were employed in getting footage they wanted to use.
