Is that because you can extract potassium nitrate from it? or is there another fun thing you can do?

I'll caveat by saying first that my education in this is purely functional, I never needed (and my bosses didn't want me to have) the theory behind it.

Urea crystals, from boiled pee, can be combined with other compounds (similar to ANAL) to make a boom. It could definitely be potassium nitrate but I don't know.

The explosives are actually pretty stable for HME. The issue is usually the detonation. Electrical det has a hard time detting it unless you push a wasteful amount of power. So an insurgent starts using unstable compounds derived from peroxide to make homemade detonators.

This is definitely getting outside the bounds of the thread though. We can take it to PM if anyone had any additional questions on peepee poopoo bombs.

This does not make sense when, again, aggregate indicia also indicate improvements. The belief that things are worse is false. It remains false.
I would like to suggest not discussing insurgent bomb manufacturing practices, in the thread or in PMs.

Quote:

As detailed in the manual Instructions for the Manufacture of Saltpetre, written by physician and geologist Joseph LeConte in 1862, a person hoping to make gunpowder quickly would need “a good supply of thoroughly rotted manure of the richest kind” which is then mixed with ash, leaves and straw in a pit. “The heap is watered every week with the richest kinds of liquid manure, such as urine, dung-water, water of privies, cess-pools, drains, &c. The quantity of liquid should be such as to keep the heap always moist, but not wet,” he wrote. The mixture is stirred every week, and after a several months no more pee is added. Then “As the heap ripens, the nitre is brought to the surface by evaporation, and appears as a whitish efflorescence, detectible by the taste.”

Has Ukraine said it used missiles for this attack? I was wondering if it used one of its new sea drones. Usually with Storm Shadow attacks we have video clips of air defence going off prior to the missiles hitting.

Given that Ukraine now has confirmed of F-16s eventually being delivered and pilots training on them, losing aircraft is less catastrophic than it once was - something you can replace can be used more freely than something you cannot. So even if Ukraine somehow lose planes on this strike, it says more about changing mindset of their airforce than about their air defense capabilities.

I don’t think it’s so much the loss of planes as pilots. All the planes in the world don’t do poo poo for you without someone to fly them.

The only source claiming any Ukrainian planes were knocked out is the Russian MOD and there's no video or photographic evidence of any kind supporting the claim.

If Russian claims were accurate Ukraine would have run out of planes five or ten times over by now.

Yeah, it's just such a shame that Ukraine lost a hundred (all, every) of their planes in this foolish suicide attack. The ship wasn't even blown up, that was just all the planes! The Ukranian planes. Hopefully this drives home the importance of Ukranian surrender, which should be fast or immediate (don't send them anything to prolong this misery). The actual ship was sent to a fjord up north where it can run and play all day and it has lots of friends

It could just as easily be Su-24 pilots with Storm Shadows. We're not going to know for certain, but it's unlikely to be sea-based unscrewed vehicles, and Ukraine doesn't have any land-based missiles with that type of range (that we know about).

Somewhat war-related. Last week, a popular Russian blogger/TV personality organised a risqué party for her celebrity friends. The dress code was 'almost naked' and the closest anyone got to it was one dude with his RHCP 'sock on cock' cosplay. Overall, a fairly unremarkable thing for Moscow. But not when crazy 'patriotic' telegram bloggers finally have some sway! Amidst the Nativity fast, while our brave lads are dying in the Ukraine? Let's see what the police have to say about it!

At first, the organiser thought that it's going to be the usual affair of people calling her names and her replying in kind on her insta. However, this time, it was different. There was a class action lawsuit filed for 10 million bucks on the account of suffering a grave moral injury after seeing some skin in photos from the party. But more importantly, the sock-on-cock guy was arrested for petty hooliganism and LGBT propaganda. Right after that, other guests started to mysteriously disappear from TV shows, their own concerts being cancelled, etc., and quickly started issuing teary apologies about their awful and definitely once-in-a-lifetime moral missteps, including Putin's god-daughter Ksenia Sobchak.

All this on the heels of police raids on gay nightclubs in Moscow.

It really looks like the ultraconservative minority in Russia are getting more and more powerful as the war goes on. If you remember my posts about the state of Russian TV, the shows focused on celebrity gossip never went away during the war and with minor nods to artists visiting the frontlines or loose acquaintances throwing some poo poo Zelenskyi's way, continued unimpeded to cover very similar parties and how sexy everyone who attended was. There were always grumblings on telegram about it, but if their target wasn't vocally anti-war, it basically never amounted to anything.

In Ukraine, at the very beginning of the full-scale war, there were scandals surrounding MPs who partied during curfew or travelled to Qatar for their wartime holibobs, and some celebrities got in hot water with some people for continuing to sing songs in Russian or not donating enough for the war effort, but I don't think it ever resulted in any arrests. The whole thing was even very light on public apologies, from what I remember, even when it would be actually warranted.

You linked to a different story about Putin's astroturf pro-war soldier's wives groups:

quote:

The Kremlin is investing in movements of wives and mothers who support the war in Ukraine and promote traditional values to counter the growing influence of protesting relatives of soldiers, according to a report by the independent news outlet Holod published Tuesday.

Mobilized soldiers’ relatives, most notably the Put’ Domoi (Way Home) group, are demanding the return of their sons and husbands from the frontlines, where they are being kept for longer than promised. Their protests have become one of the Kremlin's biggest domestic political challenges in recent months.

The Katyusha movement — a likely reference to the popular Soviet war song — has emerged as the most prominent opponent of Put’ Domoi, Holod reported.

Katyusha’s members, who are vocal supporters of President Vladimir Putin, produce pro-war, pro-government content that is regularly featured by pro-government news agencies and TV channels.

The movement consists of at least 15 publicly visible members who hail from Russia and the Moscow-occupied Ukrainian territories, according to Holod.

Most of these women claim to be relatives of Russian servicemen currently fighting in Ukraine, though Holod’s journalists were unable to find proof of these connections.

Katyusha claims that its funding comes from public donations. Holod’s investigation identified the government-linked Internet Development Institute (IRI) as the chief sponsor of the movement's pro-war short films.

Another movement created in juxtaposition to Put’ Domoi is Zhenskoe Dvizhenie (Women’s Movement), which according to Holod is sponsored by the ruling United Russia party.

Zhenskoe Dvizhenie is headed by Nataliya Poluyanova, a State Duma deputy from the Ukraine-bordering Belgorod region, and Federation Council senators Galina Karelova and Darya Lantratova, who represent the Voronezh region and the annexed Luhansk region of Ukraine respectively.

United Russia’s movement has focused its efforts in Russia’s regions, away from major urban centers such as Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Oh yeah, I thought that was just a smaller boat that had taken the bigger ship's place but it's the superstructure :haw:

e: if the secondary explosions and debris could sink a ship that wasn't even right next to the target, it would suggest that several of the ships in port took different degrees of damage from the attack and I don't mean just broken windows. With luck there's some very expensive repairs before they are all operational again.

It's very possible that the only ATACMS Ukraine has received so far are the cluster munition type that they used on the Russian airbase a while back to blow up all those helicopters. It's good for that, but probably not what you'd want to use on a naval ship.

Washington puts forward G7 plan to confiscate $300bn in Russian assets

’The Financial Times’ posted:

The US has proposed that working groups from the G7 explore ways to seize $300bn in frozen Russian assets, as the allies rush to agree a plan in time for the second anniversary of Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

While no decisions have been taken and the issue remains hotly debated inside European capitals, the acceleration of work on confiscating Moscow’s assets for Ukraine highlights its rising importance for the west.

The topic was discussed this month by both G7 finance ministers and their deputies, according to people briefed on the calls, which touched on how to develop such a policy and assess the risks involved.

There’s more in the link. I’m not very familiar with the history of asset freezing & seizure but wouldn’t this be unprecedented in the modern era? Sure asset freezes happen all the time but I don’t know any other examples of outright confiscations, at least at this scale

Well, the strike on that ship seems to have really angered Putin. He's apparently sent goon squads to Crimea to look for partisans who gave its location away to the Ukrainians. Whether such people actually exist or were in any way responsible for the attack is another issue, but this event actually seems to have got under the spider in the Kremlin's carapace.

Sounds like what you might expect from the Telegraph. The source is a resistance group, how do they know what Putin's reaction was? How would they know that authorities are looking for who gave away the ship's location, instead of looking for people who gave away the ship's fate in social media? Because the authorities have already publicly condemned the latter behaviour as assisting enemy intelligence. But if you leave out all the speculation, you don't have much of a story to print.

I had thought that this sort of thing would've happened quite a while ago. Like what is Russia going to do, get more mad? Attack even more?

There's no benefit to dealing with such a country as long as the government is the way it is.
