Really I think Precure monopolising the genre probably had a bigger impact.

Yeah, nothing’s really come close to the success of stuff like Sailor Moon and Precure as far as I know (though Madoka’s getting a new movie at some point, the Clear Card anime for Cardcaptor Sakura is apparently coming back eventually now that the manga’s finally over and I think there might be a new Symphogear project in the works as well)

Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki 2: i really liked the first season after checking it out a few days ago - kind of turns the dorky anime slice-of-life romance on its head by using a glowup on the nerdy protag to explore the nature of social dynamics, self-improvement, and if there's an inherent tension between earnestly being yourself and being presentable. they used some contrived gaming metaphor to get there but it's a cool show. first ep of season 2 was more of that and it's one of the things i'm most excited about this season.

Oh, cool, that reminds me I wanted to pick this up. It did seem like a fun premise, kind of like Train Guy but not about a train guy.

Starting Gushing Over Magical Girls ep1

premise has a lot of potential. though probably missing references to Precure tropes that will probably be thrown around.

edit: oh wow, this is lewder than I thought it was gonna be. Thought it would be more wholesome like The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated!

well the beginning was, but the regular troupe jokes are neat. I like how normal magical girl show the OP is.

the dark magical girl thing is different from complaining about WN/LN trends since it was never about volume, but the online idea that madoka had singlehandedly corrupted magical girls and stolen it from its original audience, so any time something pegged as a "dark magical girl show" came around you'd have people lamenting what the concept had become, forever

Gushing Over Magical Girls is airing on AT-X, which should be a giant blaring siren as to what kind of show it is, even if you missed someone earlier in the thread pointing it out already.

actually that makes me curious - what kind of networks air seasonal anime, do specific networks typically get certain types of shows, etc. know very little about how japanese tv works, about all i know about anime is most of it airs late at night.

Place Further than the Universe also aired on AT-X, so I don't think it's that much of a clincher.

On the subject of Madoka knockoffs I swear there was at least one show that did the exact same three episode twist even though it wasn't a magical girl series (it might have been a Muv Luv anime?) Of course everyone knew the Madoka twist though so it was just tedious waiting for the real show to start.

edit: Attack on Titan knockoffs was probably the funniest wave of anime because they dug deep for every shonen action license to slap a Sawano soundtrack onto. Remember owari no seraph??

There are a number of fairly normal shows that have aired on the network, but it's also where basically all the super lewd shows air and that is absolutely its reputation. Stuff like Queen's Blade, High School DxD, etc. And also gets all the uncensored versions of shows that otherwise air on other networks.

most shows buy tv slots on most or all of the major networks for maximum exposure. if a tv network is on the production committee then they'll get the earliest timeslot. full exclusivity doesnt really seem to be a thing.

for example, Metallic Rouge is produced by Fuji TV for their "+Ultra" anime block but if you look at the show website it's also airing on a bunch of other channels at later dates/times as well.

AT-X is an anime-specific premium channel, they can show nudity since its not broadcast tv so thats the only real case of 'certain types of shows', otherwise everything airs everywhere

also talking about the mecha genre purely in terms of "eva likes" kinda springs from a weird bit of ignoring that like. eva wasnt the only hugely popular and influential mecha anime of that year. nadesico was roughly as popular it just didn't have a tight enough creative grasp around itself for future works to maintain that presence, prince of darkness did not really end up being its end of evangelion
the thing is even before eva the mecha and sci-fi genres were already trending towards more introspective. in the first half of the 90s, before eva, we got stuff like victory gundam and tekkaman blade. and stuff like nadesico and gundam wing was contemporary with eva. eva didnt really change the game, it was honestly more influential for accelerating the rise of characters as marketing (see: asuka and rei plastered on everything) than for its narrative beats. those were obviously influential too, and there's definitely stuff that pays direct homage to it, but japanese sci-fi in general was going in that direction in the late 80s and 90s. look at like, kamen rider black.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yVWurrghSw

the economic bubble burst in 92. japanese pop culture output in general became a lot more experimental and darker as a bunch of low budget stuff gets thrown together intead of resources being poured into big blockbusters. thats also why you got so many weird OVAs that were like 3-4 episodes. eva's a reflection of the era it was made in. it set trends in a lot of ways but it wasnt the first or only thing to go in the directions it did.
