The Regional War No One Wanted Is Here. How Wide Will It Get?
With the U.S.-led attacks in Yemen, there is no longer a question of whether the Israel-Hamas war will escalate into a wider conflict. The question is whether it can be contained.

From the outbreak of the Israeli-Hamas war nearly 100 days ago, President Biden and his aides have struggled to keep the war contained, fearful that a regional escalation could quickly draw in American forces.

Now, with the American-led strike on nearly 30 sites in Yemen on Thursday and a smaller strike the next day, there is no longer a question of whether there will be a regional conflict. It has already begun. The biggest questions now are the conflict’s intensity and whether it can be contained.

Djibouti was against land-based missiles; I don't know if they said anything about aircraft. Otherwise, the easiest route would probably be from Cyprus though Egyptian airspace that way neither the Saudis or Oman have to be involved.

Also, there is a carrier with at least several escorts with tomahawks.

The real question is if they can sustain a long-term campaign and that is a little more ify.

WHO ARE THE HOUTHIS?

Houthi rebels swept down from their northern stronghold in Yemen and seized the capital, Sanaa, in 2014, launching a grinding war. A Saudi-led coalition intervened in 2015 to try to restore Yemen’s exiled, internationally recognized government to power.

Years of bloody, inconclusive fighting against the Saudi-led coalition settled into a stalemated proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran, causing widespread hunger and misery in Yemen, the Arab world’s poorest country. The war has killed more than 150,000 people, including fighters and civilians, and created one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters, killing tens of thousands more.

Mohyeldin was sent by NBC as a correspondent to Gaza at the beginning of the one month-long 2014 conflict. His coverage was praised by media critics such as Glenn Greenwald for departing from "the standard pro-Israel coverage that dominates establishment American press coverage".[13]

Two weeks into the conflict, on July 16, 2014, Mohyeldin witnessed and reported via a series of tweets, the death of 4 Palestinian children who were playing soccer and hide-and-seek on a Gaza beach.[14] The first missile killed one child and the second killed the other 3. The killings were witnessed by many in the international press. Just moments earlier Mohyeldin was kicking a soccer ball with these boys in front of his hotel. The Israeli government claimed that the beach was shelled in response to Hamas rocket fire allegedly originating from that area, though journalists who attended the scene said the beach was empty but for a fisherman's hut and a few tools.[15][16][17][18]

Although Mohyeldin was a live witness to the event,[19] NBC correspondent Richard Engel reported the story from Tel Aviv. NBC followed by pulling Mohyeldin from Gaza and terminating his reporting duties from Gaza indefinitely. Engel was sent to replace him in Gaza.[20] NBC was subsequently criticized by independent media outlets for removing Mohyeldin,[21] with many believing he was singled out for portraying Palestinians with empathy and social media trends accusing NBC of pro-Israel bias.

Mostly, I think America's competitors are not very impressed. Biden as aggressive as his administration is, is still probably too passive for some of the Beltway crowd. They expect full aggression at all times, and at best he is going to have to appease them.

The US is not only not prepared for a war; it is probably actively having its capabilities degraded over time. The munitions they are using can't be re-stocked for years, and it maintenance issues for all the branches are starting to rack up. It was talked about in the WW3 thread about the USN, but there is a reason there is only 1 carrier at sea in the Pacific and another in the Red Sea at moment and it isn't because the US doesn't need more. The Ford and the Reagan both had to go back to port for a while, and there are 3 other carriers in drydock; the rest need more time in port as well . In addition, the Nimitz probably needs to be retired in 2024-2025. Furthermore, America is also winding down the rest of its cruisers. The LCS is an open pile of burning money, and it may be 2029 before the US even has the first of its new frigates.

Its a mess.
